United States Announces a Pair of 20 Petaflop Supercomputers
A pair of laboratories in the United States are currently building 20 petaflop supercomputers. The system from Oak Ridge National Laboratory remains a mystery, while the system being built by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is being built by IBM. Both systems are expected to be operational in 2012. Oak Ridge is home to the former most powerful supercomputer, Jaguar, which runs at 1.75 petaflops and has recently been overtaken by the Tianhe-1A of China at 2.5 petaflops. China is also developing more powerful supercomputers, though details are unknown at this time. In addition to creating more powerful systems today, researchers are also developing the next step of supercomputing, those capable of exaflop operation.
