Well, the ultraportable market just got a lot more exciting. And a lot more varied. The IdeaPad U260 was just introduced by Lenovo, and it's said to be the world's first 12.5" ultraportable notebook. Basically, this provides a 16:9 widescreen aspect ration on a 12" (or so) display, making it more suitable for watching widescreen movies on planes and such. It's also a rather luxurious machine, with a magnesium-aluminum alloy real metal cover, leather-patterned palm rest and glass touchpad.
This isn't designed for bargain shoppers. Instead, it's designed for those who place a high value on style, and like Apple's unibody design approach, Lenovo has used an insert-molding injection technology for their own one-piece design. The leather-patterend palm rest is also interesting; it's not often that we see laptops with any cushion at all on the palm rest, usually due to heat build-up. The touchpad also supports multi-gesture inputs, and it will be available in both mocha brown and clementine orange colors.
Internally, there's a Core i5 processor, 320GB hard drive, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, Intel's Advanced Cooling Technology and Lenovo's Active Protection System to guard against data loss in drops. It ships with Windows 7 Home Premium, a webcam (and Skype) and Dolby audio. The U260 will ship this month and start at $899.

Gigabyte's Latest X58 Board Boasts a 24-Phase Design
Gigabyte Technology has just released their tenth X58-based motherboard, the GA-X58A-UD9. So what makes this one different from all the rest? The answer lies in the combination of high end technologies, not the least of which is a "revolutionary" 24-phase Unlocked Power design. As Gigabyte explains it, when CPU loading requires more than 12 phases to be active, the full 24 power phases are automatically unlocked, thus allowing for maximum power delivery and potentially better overclocking results.
The board supports Intel's new generation 32nm 6-core chips, as well as both 4-way SLI (with 2 nF200 SLI bridges) and 4-way CrossFireX. So what are you to do with a 0GB NAS drive? Add your own Flash memory! The MediaShare Mini was meant to be a consumer-level NAS drive that's mostly used for sharing multi-media around the house. The unit has 4 USB ports, where USB keys can be attached and then that content can be placed on a local network for viewing elsewhere.
The good news is that you can also plug in a USB hard drive, so you aren't limited to thumb drives. In this way, the box acts a little bit like the Pogoplug boxes that have emerged over the years. Once those USB storage devices are inserted, they become visible on the network, and you can even setup remote access for viewing from afar. There's DLNA support for streaming media through the PS3 or Xbox 360, and even remote access via phone. At just $90, it looks to be a nice bargain if you already own your external storage and just want to get that online ASAP.
