Chinese Build 15 Story Hotel in 2 Days
The Chinese are going through an industrial revolution, building factories and public works projects at breakneck speeds. They also like to set construction speed records it appears. Behold the incredible time lapse construction of the 15 story Ark Hotel. The 15 floor superstructure was completed in just 46 hours and the exterior of the hotel was completed in an additional 90 hours. Believe it or not, the hotel is rated level 9 Earthquake Resistance. Night Owls vs. Morning People: Who's Smarter?
It seems like everyone I know is a late-nighter who likes nothing better than to stay up all night working on computers and sleeping all day. Are they the smart ones or would it be the others that arise at sunup and get things done early on in the day? This particular debate is about to be scientifically analyzed. Researchers from the London School of Economics say that human beings used to all be day-oriented, and that eveningness is an "evolutionarily novel preference" made by people with "a higher level of cognitive complexity." Linux Mint 10 'Julia' Is Now Official
Many computer enthusiasts swear that the Linux Operating System is dead. Well, someone should tell that to the Linux developers since they keep on pumping out new versions of its various flavors. Welcome Mint 10, code named "Julia" as the latest official release from the Linux Mint team. Following the debut of its release candidate last month, Linux Mint 10 is now available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions via Torrent and HTTP download. It will be supported through April 2012. Comments

Boxee Box Now Shipping
We reported earlier this year Boxee Box planned a release for sometime in the Fall of the year. That time has finally come and Boxee Box is now shipping. If you are unfamiliar with the trade name, it is a set top box akin to Google TV and Apple TV. The unit will feature Netflix, Hulu Plus, and a variety of online services. Like Google TV, the Boxee Box can access a variety of online sources, such as YouTube, Vimeo, and VUDU. FTC Appoints Cool Hacker as Chief Technologist
The government is on top of things as usual. The Internet is 20 years old and the FTC finally got around to appointing a Chief Technologist. I'm happy that the Internet wasn't on fire and the FTC was going for water. Dr. Ed Felton, a Princeton professor of computer science and public affairs was tapped for the inaugural post. His appointment to the FTC may indeed mean great things for digital privacy such as protecting consumers and their privacy. Starting on January 1, 2011, Dr. Felten will be taking a leave from Princeton and advising the FTC on technology policy issues. Comments

YouTube Mobile Use Exploding
Google is being accessed more and more from mobile devices, so much so that a survey conducted by Google found 75% of mobile users employed handheld devices as their primary method of watching YouTube. As noted by the Google Mobile Ads blog post reporting this data, these figures aren't really a surprise. It referenced a recent Nielsen survey that found that YouTube Mobile is the number one mobile video viewing site in the U.S., with more than 7.1 million uniques. Comments

E-Book Best Seller List to be Launched
The New York Times announced it will publish best seller lists for fiction and non-fiction e-books beginning in 2011. With the explosion of e-readers being sold, it was only a matter of time before a best seller guide would be created. The New York Times has maintained a best sellers list since 1935 The Times said it will gather its e-book data from a variety of online service providers. It will also use the Web-based software platform from RoyaltyShare, Inc. to validate e-book sales figures it receives from its sources. Comments

Saudi Arabia Unblocks Facebook After Brief Ban
Facebook is about as popular as RIM in the Middle East these days. Saudi Arabia is the latest country to issue a temporary ban on the popular social network website. Pakistan and Bangladesh had also placed temporary bans on Facebook usage this year. Saudi Arabia blocked the site for only several hours today before lifting the ban. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media, later said the communications authority lifted the ban. The reason the commission reversed its decision hours later was not immediately clear. Comments

Gran Turismo 5 Launching November 24
I was waiting for Polyphony Digital to announce "this no shens" after the now famous "we have no freaking idea when it'll ship now" statement. They are serious this time, no joking around, no more delays. Gran Turismo 5 will be released November 24th. I hope for their collective sakes that it won't be a Thanksgiving turkey Yamauchi attributes the game's delay to "satisfying the loyal Gran Turismo followers," adding that the decision delay was "one which [the company] did not take lightly." Google has been advising web developers on how to prepare sites and apps for its TV platform, and Google TV’s universal search will present web search results right next to local and cable TV content. Google TV is based on Android, which also uses Webkit as its default browser.
