Finland makes broadband a legal right :: Posted by THRASHER2
First for humanity
Finland has become the first country in the world to make broadband a legal right. From next month every Finn can expect to have access to a 1Mbps (megabit per second) broadband connection.

The country has also promised to connect everyone to a 100Mbps connection by 2015. Blighty has promised a minimum connection of at least 2Mbps to all homes by 2012 but has never made this the law.

Finland's communication minister Suvi Linden said that Internet services are no longer just for entertainment. It is believed up to 96 per cent of the Finish population are already online.

The reason countries do not make broadband a legal right is because politicians are terrified of the music and film industry. It is impossible to run a three strikes and you are out campaign against file sharers if it is a legal right to have a connection.

The Finnish government piracy laws see operators sending letters to illegal file-sharers but we are not planning on cutting off access.

3.3GHz Calisto Phenom II comes in Q3 2010 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Made of Deneb
You remember Calisto core, which is actually a Deneb quad core with two cores disabled. Since AMD didnÂ’t really have many different cores it had to improvise and with 7MB of total cache Calisto definitely looked like a good dual core CPU.

The currently fastest Calisto based dual core is Phenom II X2 555 running at 3.2GHz with 80W TDP and Q3 2010 should see the arrival of the new Calisto clocked 100MHz faster at 3.3GHz. The name is also quite predictable, AMD will brand this new CPU Phenom II X2 560 and it will retain the 80W TDP.

The CPU has 1MB of L2 cache, 2x512KB per each core and a total of 6MB L3, the same amount as Deneb quad core. Calisto is quite fast and it should ship under €100 when available.

MSI officially rolls out its U160DX :: Posted by THRASHER2
Intel Atom N455 and DDR3 memory

We already wrote about its U130DX sibling, but MSI has now officially announced the Wind U160DX as well. This one is basically an U160 with an updated hardware, like Intel's Atom N455 CPU and DDR3 memory.

We had a chance to take a closer look at it on a pre-Computex event and its Turbo Drive Engine feature caught our attention as it was running at 1.77GHz instead of the rated 1.66GHz. The rest of the specs include 1GB of DDR3 memory (with support for up to 2GB), 10.1-inch 1024x600 LED screen, 160GB HDD and Intel's GMA 3150 graphics.

It also packs 802.11bgn WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 1.3M Webcam, and 2-in-1 card reader. It should also feature 3.5G support for mobile networks but it might depend on the region where it is sold. This 10.1-incher measures 265x165x19.8-25.4mm and it weighs in around 1kg with a 3-cell battery. It will also be available with a 6-cell battery.

Availability and pricing haven't been announced but as far as we know, the U160DX should end up at around €370 depending on the region and the SKU, so it will be only a bit more expensive than the U160.

Nvidia's reference GTX 460 packs 768MB :: Posted by THRASHER2
Partners left to do 1024MB version

According to what we are hearing now, Nvidia's reference GTX 460 card is the one with a 192-bit memory interface and 768MB of memory, while the 1GB version with a 256-bit memory interface will be done by partners. This also means that the 1GB version could end up with better non-reference cooling.

A lot of partners are concerned regarding the current situation as the GTX 460 1GB might end up faster than the GTX 465, at least in certain scenarios. The concern is legit and if the performance of the GTX 460 1GB comes close to the GTX 465 these cards will sell a lot better than the GTX 460, and as you would have guessed, it means that partners will get stuck with a large stock of GTX 465 cards.

We all saw the picture of the reference GTX 460, and according to our sources, that is the one with 768MB of memory. We might even see a situation where some partners will not even go for the 1GB version, at least not until they clear their GTX 465 inventory. In this case, the fully enabled GF104 might take a while before coming to the market.

Dual core Fusion has Hudson D1 Southbridge :: Posted by THRASHER2
Comes in Q4 2010 with USB 2.0 only
The first to launch Fusion, a dual-core 32nm CPU with DirectX 11 graphics will interconnect with the Hudson D1 Southbridge.

We've already told you that the TDP of first Fusion to show is a 25W part, and the Southbridge will need an additional 6W. Hudson D1 supports PCIe 4X and well as PCIe 1X interface. The USB support is kind of an awkward as it supports 14 USB 2.0 ports and two USB 1.1 slots.

The good news is that Hudson D1, most likely named after New York's famous river has RAID 5 support as well as six SATA 3GB/s ports. There is some indication that there will be a version without RAID as well and the document we've seen implies that there won't be an integrated Gbit LAN on this Southbridge.

Since this is a mainstream Southbridge you should not be surprised and you can only hope that this dual-core Fusion can support PCIe 8X or 16X in order to enable external graphics on Brazos platform. I guess that integrated graphics will have to do, as this is the whole point of AMD's Fusion chip to begin with.

Mobile Extreme edition i7 940XM comes in Q3 2010 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Quad core clocks to 3.33GHz
ItÂ’s big, it's hot, it's TDP is55W but it will be by far the fastest CPU ever to land in a notebook. Currently Intel sells Core i7 Extreme edition i7 920XM clocked at 2.0GHz with 3.2GHz core clock with turbo overclocking and this will all change in Q3 2010.

The new CPU comes with Core i7 940XM name, it is a quad core mobile Extreme edition CPU with four cores and eight threads support. The official clock is 2.13GHz but with the help of turbo this CPU can work all the way to 3.33GHz.

The memory of choice is DDR3 1333 and the CPU has 8MB of cache. At launch it will most likely inherited the $1054 price from 920XM CPU and the introduction date might be as early as next week at Germanys Games Convention, but this is not something we can confirm.

This will be the fastest CPU to launch for notebook and at least in this year, there should not be any six-core mobile CPUÂ’s as 55W from this quad core monster is hot enough for any kind of notebook / gaming desktop replacement.

Asetek makes water cooled AIO PC :: Posted by THRASHER2
Water cooling means power

Asetek, the company that was behind all those all-in-one water cooling systems like CoolIT's ECO A.L.C. and Corsair's H50 with its Asetek LCLC (Low Cost Liquid Cooling) system, has now ventured into quite a new part of the market - All-in-One PCs.

Naturally, these guys are still focusing on water cooling but this time it is all about a system packed in an All-in-One PC and water cooled in order to chill some quite impressive hardware squeezed into a rather thin display case.

The Liquid Cooled All-in-One Prototype, as Asetek brands it for now, is a 24-inch AIO PC with LED backlit display in a case that has a profile similar to Apple's iMAC. The insides of the system are even more impressive as this protype packs a 130W Core i7 CPU and 75W GTX 280M graphics card, all water-cooled by Asetek's prototype water cooler.

The entire system, or the main half of it that includes the pump and the big radiator, are placed inside the stand, while the slim water blocks are placed on the GPU and the CPU.

Of course, unless some system integrator or major vendor catches this video, we won't see it in retail. Considering how impressive it looks, we are quite sure we'll see these sooner or later but with a different brand tag on the screen.

You can check out the video of it here.

GTX 460 listed in Europe :: Posted by THRASHER2
€200+ for 768MB version
The GTX 460 launch is still a week away, but some eager retailers have chosen to ignore NDAÂ’s, much like Fudzilla, hence weÂ’re seeing the first relatively credible listings in the European market.

Nvidia has high hopes for its new GF104 core, as it is significantly cheaper to produce than the GF100 and it doesnÂ’t require nearly as much power as Fermi cards. In fact, the GTX 460, in both 768MB and 1024MB iterations, should finally provide Nvidia with a competitive DirectX 11 product in the lucrative performance segment.

Our price search engine is currently listing AsustekÂ’s ENGTX460/2DIS/768MD5, a reference board clocked at 675/900/1350MHz for the core, memory and shaders. It packs 336 shaders and 42 texture units. Power consumption is rated at 150W, which seems a world apart from the GTX 470 and 480.

Of course, the GTX 460 should not be compared to the GTX 470 or GTX 480, as it is supposed to take on AMD’s highly successful HD 5800-series cards. Although we’ve seen some early benchmarks, it’s still a bit too early to say how the GTX 460 will measure up to AMD’s HD 5850 or HD 5830. In terms of pricing, it’s somewhere in-between, as it’s currently listed just above €200, so performance should be close. Mind you, the GTX 460 768MB will probably sell in the €180 to €200 region once it becomes widely available. The 1024MB version should cost around €30 more, depending on the rest of the spec.

Be as it may, weÂ’re glad to see Nvidia back in this very popular market segment, as it might put more pressure on AMD to reduce prices, which have remained steady since Cypress series launched in Q4 2009.

You can check out the listings here. The launch date is July 12 and at this point we don't expect major availability issues, so consumers will probably be able to pick up a GTX 460 as early as next week.

Adobe Flash Player 10.1 gets ported to the Apple iPad :: Posted by THRASHER2
Independence Day at its best

As youÂ’ve probably heard many times by now, one of the biggest complaints facing AppleÂ’s mobile platform on the marketplace is its inability to run native Flash Player code. While the real reasons behind the Apple-Adobe cold war still remain inconclusive, the company simply does not want to negotiate with Adobe because of its heavy involvement with the standardization of HTML5, not to mention its rubbish hypocritical argument that Flash Player is a closed standard.

Regardless of the war being fought behind Mother AppleÂ’s revolutionary mobile i-devices, the rebels have responded by declaring independence from this tyrannical oppression by running Flash on an iPad. The guy behind Spirit untethered jailbreak tool for the iPhone cleverly managed to port the Adobe Flash runtime for Android over to the device using a compatibility layer by comex.

Interestingly enough, the port is named “Frash” and is currently able to play Flash content natively in the Safari browser on the iPad. The developer has mentioned that iPhone 3GS support is planned soon, as well as support for iOS 4, and there is a call for developers to move forward with the project at GitHub. “Frash uses a multi-process model similar to Chrome on the desktop, so a crash in the Frash/Flash plugin doesn’t take down the browser,” says the developer. “You can see this while I’m playing Alien Hominid: the ad above crashed (probably a Frash bug), but Safari stays open just fine, and continues to play other Flash content on the page.”

At this point in the development cycle, video and keyboard input are currently not supported. The former is expected to require major reverse engineers of the video decoding frameworks on the iPhone, and the latter should be reasonably easy to implement.

Of course, the port only works with an iPad running the Spirit jailbreak that was released back in early May. Based on our sources, Comex has been working on this project for some time now, and we are definitely sure that it will attract more attention from the independent developer scene over the next few weeks. In all honesty, the preview couldnÂ’t have come at a better time than July 4th and we have a feeling that a couple geeks will be lighting off some bottle rockets to celebrate this grand victory against Apple.
