"Double Digit" Cuts Of Palm Employees Post-HP Acquisition
It may be a done deal, but some former Palm employees aren't singing a positive tune after the HP acquisition. In many cases where one company takes over another (or just buys another to integrate), at least a few positions are eliminated. There's usually never a need for two CEOs, and some of the duplication simply can't be dealt with unless some folks are cut. It's an unfortunate truth, and considering just how huge both Palm and HP are, you had to expect that something like this would happen. All Things D

Who needs ATMs? Deposit Straight From Your iPhone
While Android users still wait for an official Chase bank application, iPhone users can now deposit checks from their iPhones. This new feature is sort of an extension of the new ATM systems at Chase banks, where you deposit a check and the ATM scans it. The updated Chase Mobile app not only allows the typical features that allow you to check your balance, etc. etc., but by taking a picture of the front and back of a check, you can deposit it directly into your Chase account. Additionally, this new QuickDeposit

Brite-View Debuts CinemaGo BV-5005HD Mini CG HD Media Player
If you still haven't picked up an HD media player for your living room, chances are that you probably won't. But if you just realize that you have a set-top box on top of your DVR or cable box, well, now you have another choice. Brite-View has been a quiet contender in the space for awhile, and while it doesn't have the name recognition of a Roku or Boxee Box, their newest player looks fairly decent. The new special edition CinemaGo BV-5005HD Mini CG has a pretty standard shape, complete with a USB 2.0 port,

1&1 SmartPad: ARM-Powered 7" Tablet With Android Under The Hood
Another tablet PC? Really? Can the world even stand to see another one? We sure hope so, because yet another company is trying their luck in the already-saturated market. But this company is a bit different than the rest. How so? Well, for starters, 1&1 isn't a hardware company. They aren't even a software company. They're a German Internet provider, which makes it all the stranger. But we have to confess that the renders so far are extremely enticing, and if it's executed properly, the device (called the

Livestrong Bands Provide Cheap Fix For iPhone 4
By now, you've probably heard about the iPhone 4's reception issues where users have reported reception problems and dropped calls if they hold the phone in a certain manner. Apple has suggested that users hold the phone differently or buy a case to help fix some of these problems. Apple offers its own Bumper case that surrounds the outer rim of the phone. It's available in white, black, blue, green, orange and pink. Instead of spending $29 for a rubber case from Apple, some Apple fan sites have found a cheaper

The updated Chase Mobile app not only allows the typical features that allow you to check your balance, etc. etc., but by taking a picture of the front and back of a check, you can deposit it directly into your Chase account. Additionally, this new QuickDeposit feature is free, although the bad part is you still can't get cash back from your iPhone.
An additional feature is Person-to-Person QuickPay. Similar to PayPal, it allows you to pay anyone directly from your Chase account, and you only need to know their e-mail address. The other person is not required to have a Chase account.
In particular, the QuickDeposit feature is a winner. Now if we can just get the iPhone to print money, and if Chase would extend this app to Android ...

Nokia Exec Aims To Regain Position In High-End Devices
To begin with, Vanjoki said the company will begin by advancing current projects and working to simplify its processes in order to deliver products and services faster. He also promised that quality would not suffer.
Nokia also plans to ship its first MeeGo device this year. Vanjoki further explained that the company plans to stick with Symbian and MeeGo. Despite rumors to the contrary, Nokia has no plans to offer an Android device. Nokia doesn't comment on future products, but Vanjoki did say there's a very strong possibility of a Symbian^4 Nseries device in the future.
According to Vanjoki, Nokia will focus on the Symbian platform for Nokia smartphones. Nokia realizes that people want a smartphone that is familiar, has plenty of features, and offers great performance. Vanjoki believes products such as the upcoming N8 and others that are in the pipes will deliver the best and most familiar parts of Symbian and therefore make it easy for users to upgrade.
With many good operating systems and smartphones already on the market, the return to stardom will be challenging for Nokia. Vanjoki says he and the entire Nokia team are ready to take on this challenge. Here's hoping their efforts pay off and we see great products from Nokia in the not-too-distant future.

Livestrong Bands Provide Cheap Fix For iPhone 4
Instead of spending $29 for a rubber case from Apple, some Apple fan sites have found a cheaper fix: Livestrong Bands. These plastic wristbands are available for about $1 each. To use the wristband as a guard for your iPhone 4, you'll need to use a pair of scissors and cut holes for the phone's dock connector, headphone jack, and silent-mode toggle switch.
Of course, Apple isn't going to back the Livestrong band solution, but Livestrong.org certainly isn't complaining about the extra business. “This glitch is our gain by getting our message of social change to more people,†foundation President Doug Ulman said in a statement. Lance Armstrong sent a message to his Twitter.com followers simply saying, "Wow. Cool," with regards to the new use for the bands.

What did you get in the Steam sale?
There's 1 more day left, I'm anxious to see what goes on sale for the final day in 3 hours. I definitely went overboard, bought 20+ games, so I won't list them all, but some of my favorite catches were Cryostasis for about $2, Assassin's Creed 2 half off, Borderlands + all DLC 50% off, and Stalker Call of Pripyat 25% off (already had Shadow of Chernobyl, so the "loyalty discount" made CoP start at $20, and Just Cause 2 + dlc 50% off.
Did anybody else take advantage of this sale? I wonder how many millions of dollars traded hands this week.

New build: upgrade path AM3 or 1156 and Core?
Alright, I'm getting seriously bogged down in information on cpu's, chipsets and the like. I'm going to build a new system and want to be able to upgrade later along the lines of a Core I5 750 (& future offerings) or go AM3 and move up to a future quad core AMD. I have some parts now, don't want to get into budget limits and am not a serious gamer.
I will be doing some video and audio editing but otherwise read alot online and play older games so I don't need to keep up with the latest. I'm not interested in using more than 1 video card and currently don't OC. I am a bit interested in AMD tweaking software & Dragon (and Spider) 'platforms' but have been leaning towards an i3 5XX or Athlon II X2 or X3.
Question: Does Dragon or Spider have to use a quad core Phenom? Would anyone really give a squat about either if I can get an i3, put more $ into a card and bide my time for i5 prices to drop? I don't know if this 'no northbridge' stuff is gonna be significant or not. Would it make more sense to get a multi-core Athlon, knowing more applications and games will be multi-threaded? I don't need to buy more cpu now than I can use, figure I'll upgrade later.
Finally, I hope to not make the mistake of buying a card that won't be able to offer very good performance at 1920x1080 with all the stops out. At least for games that are not cutting edge. I believe any of the cpu's I'm thinking of will be able to handle that as long as the card is up to date.
Thanx in advance for any thoughts.

Lenovo's 3D IdeaPad Y560D Notebook Now On Sale
Lenovo is a company we never really expected to hop on the 3D bandwagon, but sure enough, they have become one of the first to ship a 3D laptop. The newest member of the IdeaPad family, the Y560D, just went on sale at the company's website. It's their very first 3D capable notebook, and they didn't skimp on the hardware. There's a 1.6GHz Core i7-720QM processor at the helm, which will provide plenty of power for both everyday computing tasks as well as the occasional game. And then there's Windows 7 Home Premium, along with 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 GPU, 500GB hard drive, a 6-cell battery and a dual-layer DVD burner. There's also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, JBL speakers and plenty of class.
The machine starts at $1499, though there's obviously the the ability to customize it if you have the cash.

"Double Digit" Cuts Of Palm Employees Post-HP Acquisition
All Things D is reporting that some Palm employees were cut after the HP deal was officially concluded, but they still aren't sure of exactly how many were sent packing. According to sources, there have been "double digit" cuts; not in the hundreds, but still an event that's not positive for those who were working so hard to revive Palm and help it to stand alone. A company spokesperson had this to say: "Part of the integration strategy is consolidation of functions and operations, as appropriate. There always is turnover in organizations. Palm employees overall are enthusiastic about having the financial stability and global scale necessary to complete their vision."
We still can't know for sure just what the new Palm would look like. It's now listed as a subsidiary of HP, but none of the new management has come forward with very clear details about Palm's role at HP. One can only hope that fracturing a once tight-knit workforce won't lead to product delays and the like, but we suppose only time will tell.
