The Most Sought After Laptop In The U.S.?
There was only one laptop in the U.S. that could read the information off the event data recorders used by Toyota? Really? Last week, Toyota acknowledged it has only a single laptop available in the U.S. to download its data recorder information because it is still a prototype, despite being in use since 2001 in Toyota vehicles. Three other laptops capable of reading the devices were delivered this week to NHTSA for training on their use, Toyota said, and 150 more will be brought to the U.S. for commercial use by the end of April. By contrast, acceptance and distribution of data recorder technology by other automakers is commonplace. Comments

100Mbps Broadband May Be Closer Than You Think
100Mbps broadband for $100 a month? It may be closer than you think. Hell, I already pay a hundred dollars a month for 12Mbps. Getting a bump in speed up to 100Mbps (at the same price) would be awesome. The issue is not whether those speeds can be achieved nor is it whether broadband providers can reach 100 million homes with the service in 10 years. Docsis 3.0, which is the next generation of cable networking technology that allows operators to bond digital channels together, can easily provide 100 Mbps or more. Most major cable companies in the U.S. are well on their way to upgrading to this technology. Meanwhile, Verizon has already passed 12.2 million homes with its fiber service, which it claims can offer up to 400Mbps download speeds. Comments

Ubisoft DRM Authentication Servers Go Down
Ubisoft's new DRM system, the one that requires customers to constantly be connected to the internet while playing a game, has been down for a day. As you can imagine, people that can't play their legitimately purchased games are thrilled. Well, as it turns out, when the Ubioft severs go down, no one can play their games and Ubisoft customers get very upset. At around 8am GMT, people began to complain in the Assassin's Creed 2 forum that they couldn't access the Ubisoft servers and were unable to play their games. Fast forward ten hours and it seems that the problem still hasn't been resolved, despite the assurances from a Ubisoft representative that the servers were 'constantly monitored' Comments

The Illegal Downloaders' Oscar Winners
Now here is a new twist on picking Oscar winners. I'm not sure how accurate it will be but I guess it is as good as any other method. The votes were actually tallied by counting movie downloads ....one download, one vote. What could possible be illegal about that? Torrent Freak is careful to point out that some of the nominated movies only leaked into the Web's avaricious clutches over the last few weeks. Still, perhaps the information that you might find most indicative of an interesting world is that 12,639,000 people torrented "District 9." (This includes cammed versions.) Comments

Milk Carton Database
This new database, called NamUs by its founder, hopes to help find the more than the 100,000 people missing in the US. The clearinghouse, dubbed NamUs (Name Us), offers a quick way to check whether a missing loved one might be among the 40,000 sets of unidentified remains that languish at any given time with medical examiners across the country. GameSpy Predicts the Future of Video Games
Wow, some of these video game predictions are just scary (mostly because they are possible). This quote is my favorite: Nintendo hypes the Wii 2 as a bleeding-edge multimedia powerhouse that will play DVDs. Comments

One-Person Towns to Census: Count Me In
Wow, talk about your one horse towns, these don't even have the horse, just the rider. The tiniest U.S. communities say their official population doesn't compute....uh, if they even have a computer. The question arises would it be ethical to hire the only resident to take the census? At least this will not be a big waste of government resources, Census workers get paid by the hour, this should take about a minute. Why does it really matter, after all, that a Nebraska town comprised of a tavern, a few crumbling houses, four street lamps, and one drivable, dirt street be counted exactly right? Or even at all? "Because I live in it," said Elsie Eiler, who is Monowi's entire population. Yet Census Bureau estimates from this summer say that there are two Monowians. "Where's this other person?" Eiler said. "Let me know. ... I don't want to come back to my house at 11 or 12 and see someone else there." Comments

Finishing School for Indian IT Graduates
It's about time somebody decided to teach nerds and geeks the finer points of life. What sort of stuff are they teaching them? Things like eye contact, chewing food with your mouth closed, zip up your fly, no toilet paper on your shoe...those fine points. Unfortunately they are doing it in India, not here. They spend all their time on the computer, their communication is via technical networking, not people networking. "Once they join an office, they don't know how to interact with their colleagues, how to speak to each other, their body language and voice intonation is not right, and nobody teaches them these things. If you are working in the back office of a computer firm, you may need to speak to your customer in the US who is 10,000 miles away." Comments

Will Radar Make Your Email More Manageable?
Carnegie Melon University, the designers of skinput, have made the news again. A group of researchers has just announced Reflective Agents with Distributed Adaptive Reasoning (Radar). This new "radar" is dependent on human user input to recognize certain words and for that user to set a priority to those words. Faulring found that volunteers given the tool significantly outperformed those left to sort through the emails unaided, and made fewer mistakes Comments

Twitter's Mysterious 10 Billionth Tweet
Late last Thursday, one of Twitter's users unknowingly tripped the magic number and put Twitter over the top. OK, so I'm impressed by the numbers, but I would be more impressed if that was McDonalds hamburgers....at least they have substance. There is so much tweeting going on that the birds have become silent. Interest in the milestone was high on the micro-blogging site, which has seen astronomical growth since it started in 2007. Thursday evening, the site for GigaTweet, an app that tracks the number of Twitter posts in real time, was down – presumably from overuse. Comments

Windows Phone 7 Series a Clean Break.
Sounds like Microsoft Inc. is stirring another pot with its upcoming release of Windows Phone 7. Microsoft again makes a big step in the direction of trying to compete with Apple. The real question is if the drastic step will compete and how they will deal with leaving the developers on the sidelines once again. Kindel said Microsoft still will support Windows Mobile 6.5 "for years to come," and expects some new devices with that software will come out. Comments
