Are You Ready for 3-D TV? I Hope You Like the Glasses....A Lot.
3-D TV is not quite ready for prime time as a stand alone unit, not yet at least. Looks like it will be on the order of another 10 years before you can trash the funny glasses and enjoy the view au naturale. Meaning without the glasses, not your clothes. Turning this polymer into something large enough and that refreshes fast enough to work as a TV is another matter. "Don't expect 3-D TVs without glasses anytime soon," Peyghambarian says. The technology he and his colleagues are developing is about five years away from use as a TV display and probably a decade away from a product that can be brought into the home. Comments

Toyota and Microsoft?
What kind prick compares Toyota, a company that caused the deaths of entire families and lied about it, to Microsoft who at best causes people a minor inconvenience on the grand scale of things? Well this guy that's who. I love the part about Mac people consoling Microsoft users because my Windows device caught on fire in my pocket , oh wait, that didn't happen. Imagine, the letter from Microsoft, for that matter, addressing Windows operators (as the PC Guy attempts to shrug off the consolation of his Mac counterpart) Comments

TiVo wins patent battle.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit made TiVo Inc. happy by upholding a lower courts decision that Dish Network Corp. and EchoStar Corp are infringing on their patents. TiVo is excited also due to ongoing litigations with AT&T, Verizon, and Microsoft. "We also will be proposing a new design-around to the district court for approval," Dish and EchoStar said in a statement. "At this time, our DVR customers are not impacted." Comments

Ready For Your Body Scan?
Seems like the your doctors office is not the only place where you can get a body scan. Airports will now be using full body scans as a security measure to deter the likes of the "underwear bomber". Wonder if you can make them work like X-Ray vision? The machines also cannot detect so-called "booty bombs" in which an explosive is inserted into the body. Comments

How to Build a $1000 Fusion Reactor in Your Basement
Here it is folks, the ultimate geek/nerd science fairish project you can imagine. Guaranteed to upset the balance of power within your sphere of operation (no pun intended). Amaze your friends and family members with your technical expertise with your very own Nuclear Reactor in your basement. Please register with the NRC before going live. If you decide to proceed, though, a few cautions: Beware of high-voltage electricity, which can skyrocket to more than 50,000 voltsآ—enough that contact with a loose wire will kill you instantly. Pressurized flammable gas can also be fatal. And electrons hitting the stainless steel chamber produce X-rays, so do not look at the little window directly. Instead use a camera or leaded glass filter. Contact your state's department of health for regulations. Your reactor will use a lot more energy than it produces. It is barely capable of achieving a detectable nuclear reaction, so fusion is one of the least hazardous parts of this project. Comments

A Closer Look at Windows Live
We've all seen them and figure heh, Microsoft add ons, no thanks. Maybe time for another hard look at these apps and the price is always good....free. What most users don't know is Windows Live comes in two flavors....Downloadable Apps and Services. Check out the little known Skydrive, well worth the read. It's a free, 25-gigabyte virtual hard drive on the Internet, accessible from any computer. It's a perfect intermediate parking place for files you want to shuttle from one computer to another. You can also use it for offsite backup of your most important files, or as a handy intermediary for sharing big folders with other people far away. Comments

Browser Makers Demand Screen Time
I honest to goodness feel bad for some of the guys at Microsoft, first they get done implementing a system for European Windows users to choose a default browser. Then these guys start complaining that people may not want to scroll all the way to the right to chose their unheard of browser, I know there is a team of coders that's just pissed right now. The final choice screen design leaves the vast majority of users unaware that there are more than five browsers to chose from. Comments

Cheap Android/Windows Tablets In Our Future?
It looks like this could prove to be some good competition for the iPad. I wonder if Best Buy will try to sell these optimized? In truth, all of the ones we played with felt chintzy, but it was easier to lower our standards when we learned they wouldn't draw more than $150 from our wallets. Comments

Methane Bubbles in Arctic Seas Stir Warming Fears
Calling Al Gore and the Tin Hat Brigade....the Earth has a bad case of gas and is raising a big stink among scientists who are studying this phenomenon. Emanating from the frozen seabeds off of Siberia, the sea floor had been considered an impermeable barrier sealing methane. Current methane concentrations in the Arctic are the highest in 400,000 years......and you thought Taco Bell was to blame. It was unclear, however, if the Arctic emissions of methane gas were new or had been going on unnoticed for centuries -- since before the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century led to wide use of fossil fuels that are blamed for climate change. 'Uncrackable' DRM Lasts 24 Hours
Never underestimate the power of the geek as Ubisoft recent became aware....brings back memories of the use of a simple magic marker to remove the copy protection from CD years ago. As Commander Scott so elequently put it, "The more they try to improve the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain. I'm a firm believer in the idea that you should pay your way in this world. That said, this DRM scheme comes across as awfully heavy-handed and annoying. This DRM sounded so annoying that it was unlikely to stand for long.........And it didn't. Comments
