Vodafone Launches $15 Handset

Vodafone has released two new ultra low cost handsets, the Vodafone 150 and the Vodafone 250. Both handsets are aimed at developing markets to enable millions of people to experience the connectivity a mobile phone can offer.

"The cost of mobile handsets can be one of the most significant barriers for people in accessing and benefiting from the growing number of socially valuable mobile services. Both models offer voice and SMS services, polyphonic ringtones, 2 integrated games, a vibrating alert, memory for up to 100 phonebook entries, a 500mAh battery (up to 400 hours standby and up to 5 hours talk time) and operate on GSM 900/1800. The lower-end Vodafone 150 has a 1.0" 96x64 resolution monochrome display, where as its higher-end brother, the Vodafone 250 features a 1.45" 128x128 resolution CSTN colour display along with an FM radio.

Both handsets will be launched in India, Turkey, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Qatar, South Africa and Tanzania. The Vodafone 150 and Vodafone 250 will retail unsubsidised for US$15 and US$20 respectively.

Car computing systems, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, and even connected televisions will see the new technology in various settings, all under the name of MeeGo, and supported by both technology giants, Nokia and Intel.
