Acer reported building MacBook Air-thin laptop :: Posted by THRASHER2
Acer, the second-largest PC manufacturer on this planet, is hard at work on a lot of things these days, like an app store, Chrome OS netbooks and e-book readers, yet that isn't stopping it from also developing a new laptop that would rival Apple's MacBook Air in terms of thinness.

According to a report, at least one of Acer's upcoming laptops will be just 1.9 cm thick, same as Apple's star cake-cutting model. Not much info about Acer's product is known except that it will be based on Intel's Calpella platform and utilize an ULV (ultra-low voltage) processor. Intel is expected to release three 32nm CULV CPUs in this first half of 2010, the 1.06 GHz Core i5 520UM and i7 620UM, and the 1.2 GHz i7 640UM, so one of them could be the one Acer uses for its ultra-thin laptop.

Digital Storm introduces the Black|OPS gaming system :: Posted by THRASHER2
Looking to buy something for the gamer in you this Valentine's Day? You're in luck then as Digital Storm has added a new gaming rig to its line-up, the Black|OPS. Pre-loaded with Windows 7, the Black|OPS systems make use of Core i5/i7 or Phenom II X4 CPUs, Nvidia or AMD graphics cards, pack at least 4GB of RAM, and include Digital Storm's Sub-Zero Liquid Cooling System which will take the heat off the processor, video cards, and the motherboard chipset.

The fresh gaming PCs can be overclocked out-of-the-box thanks to the TwisterBoost option, and also be equipped with the Noise Suppression Package which combines noise dampening material, fan speed tuning and chassis airflow adjustments so as to lower the overall PC sound output.

"With Black|OPS, our engineers designed, integrated and optimized our gaming PCs from the ground up; the result is nothing less than astounding," commented Rajeev Kuruppu, Digital Storm's Director of Product Development. "Unlike other gaming PC integrators, who simply cram the latest hardware into chassis, Digital Storm's engineers select the highest quality components and ensure that every piece works in perfect unison with each other. We truly believe that our Black|OPS systems will redefine the standards that gamers hold their systems to."

Acer to launch new ultrathin notebook :: Posted by THRASHER2
19mm waistline, Calpella inside

According to CENS Taiwan Economic News, Acer plans to launch a new ultrathin notebook series sometime this year.

Acer is the second largest notebook vendor and it already holds a sizable chunk of the CULV notebook market with its Timeline series. However, although the Timelines are very well priced and feature impressive battery life, they feature a boxy design and at 2.54cm they are a bit on the chunky side.

The new series will apparently be 19mm thick, which would make it thinner than most CULVs, expect a few models, such as Dell's Vostro V13 or some MSI X-Slim models. The new Acer series will be based on Intel's Calpella ULV processors and it should offer superior performance compared to current Timelines, which are powered by 45nm CULV parts.

Mind you, such sleek and well spec'd machines probably won't come cheap, but then again 32nm processors in a 19mm package just sound right. Most vendors will launch updated thin-and-light designs once Intel's new processors become available, but Acer seems to be the first vendor preparing an entirely new model designed for the new architecture from the ground up. Well, truth be told, the others are probably making them as well, but they're not talking about them just yet.

Sandy Bridge supports up to 4 displays :: Posted by THRASHER2
Two internal and two via USB

It looks like Sandy Bridge CPUs and the platform powered by the Cougar Point chipset have a few surprises in store for us. Not only can Intel support dual displays, but it now claims that with the help of Cougar Point chipset, it can support up to four displays.

It plans to support two via integrated graphics that are part of the CPU, whereas the additional two would be possible via USB and would be powered by Cougar Point, Intel 6 series chipset. Unfortunately, at this point we donآ’t have any more details.

This is not the only surprise as the new IGP from Intel comes with an integrated DisplayPort support all the way to 2560x1600. Letآ’s not forget the HDMI 1.3 support with premium audio, which gives Intel's integrated graphics a much better flavor.

آ• Sandy Bridge Graphics Support
آ• Integrated Displayport with up to 2560x1600 resolution
آ• Multi-monitor display with up to 4 displays: 2 Int, 2 USB2
آ• HDMI1.3 support with premium audio

Atom Pine Trail M HD chip supports Flash Player 10.1 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Comes from Broadcom

Since Intel was incapable of making an HD decoder chip that could play HD in 1080p for its Atom platform, it reached out to one of its competitors, Broadcom and used their HD chip.

Intel's latest Atom platform codenamed Pinetrail M can play HD 1080p with the help of Broadcom's BCM70015 HD video decoder chip and it will be up to Intelآ’s partners to implement and buy this chip.

We are not aware of the chip pricing but we are quite sure that this will cost less than Nvidiaآ’s Ion 2. Still, Ion 2 will let you play some games on your netbook while Broadcom can only make sure you HD 1080p works without stuttering.

It looks like little green Nvidia has pushed Intel to do something it didnآ’t originally plan, as Intel's Atom graphics won't be able to play HD 1080p at least until the next generation in late 2011. End users can be happy as they will get HD 1080p support on netbooks, if anyone still wants to buy one, considering that for just over آ€300 you can get a nice thin and light Lenovo, Acer or similar 13-inch notebook. Pinetrail M Atom will usually cost more than that and it's evident that it will offer less, a lot less.

Sapphire working on Toxic HD 5850 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Custom designed HD 5850

In addition to the bunch of entry-level DirectX 11 capable cards that were launched a few weeks ago, Sapphire is also working on a custom HD 5850 that will be a part of Sapphire's Toxic series.

The new one features a custom blue PCB with duals slot Vapor Chamber cooler and is overclocked to 765MHz for the GPU and 4500MHz for the 1GB of GDDR5 memory. This is a quite an impressive overclock, considering that the reference card works at 725MHz for the GPU and 4000MHz for memory.

The card still features 1440 stream processors, a 256-bit memory interface, DirectX 11, CrossfireX and Eyefinity support. The Vapor Chamber cooler should be 10dBA quieter and up to 15 degrees cooler than the reference cooler, but that is something that we have to wait and see.

The card has showed up at Overclockers.co.uk site and ETA is 15th of February. The preorder price stands at آ£269.99 inc VAT which is around آ€310/$420.

Asus shows its custom HD 5870 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Matrix series with 2GB of memory

According to some pictures taken by a Chinese website, Asus is apparently preparing a new Republic of Gamers Matrix series card based on the ATI Radeon HD 5870 GPU. In addition to the fancy name, Asus has also tweaked the PCB with better voltage regulators, factory overclock, higher overclocking potential and double amount of memory.

The card should work at 900MHz for the core and 1225MHz for memory (4900MHz effective). It should have a stronger VRM circuit which could lead to even higher clocks once this one reaches the hands of overclockers. It has two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors, and feature DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs.

Asus also tweaked the cooler which looks similar to the previously released Geforce GTX 285 Matrix. The back plate also features a "safe mode" button that reverts the card to failsafe clocks and voltage once things go wrong. The card will most probably feature Asus' VoltageTweak voltage control software support.

Unfortunately, the price or the availability date hasn't been announced but we guess that Asus is keeping this one under wraps for CeBIT, as it could easily be the crown jewel in Asus' Cebit VGA lineup.
