Nokia and Intel to merge Maemo, Moblin mobile operating systems

Nokia and Intel will merge two of their mobile operating systems into MeeGo, a Linux-based, open operating system for everything from advanced smartphones to netbooks, connected TVs, and tablet computers, the companies said at a joint press conference on Monday.

The new operating system will combine the best features from each operating system, including the Moblin core and the UI (user interface) toolkit from Maemo. Intel developed Moblin, and Nokia developed Maemo. The first version of MeeGo will ship during the second quarter.

Microsoft CEO unveils Windows Phone 7

Microsoft unveiled the next version of its operating system for mobile phones, Windows Phone 7 Series, featuring a move away from applications and towards functions. "It's all about the phone and how consumers react to the device," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, opening a news conference held outside the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday.

Adobe Systems is readying a mobile version of Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR), itsآ runtime for runningآ Flash and Web applications outside of a browser. The company plans to demonstrate AIR 2.0 running on a Google Android-based smartphone today at the Mobile Word Congress in Barcelona.
