The U.S. government should advance an "ambitious" plan for universal broadband availability and should ensure that broadband networks are open to all content and applications, according to a new study on public information needs in the digital age.

The wide-ranging study, released Friday, calls for new ideas to share news and information, even as the traditional newspaper industry appears near death.

Google Chrome OS could arrive in late October

Google first announced its entry into the operating system space back in July. At that time, Google stated that Chrome OS would not be available to consumers until sometime in 2010. However, various Chinese sources have today claimed that devices running the upcoming open-source OS could be seen as early as next month.

Update: IBM aims at Google, Microsoft with new low-cost enterprise Webmail

IBM has launched LotusLive iNotes, an on-demand e-mail, calendaring, and contact management system meant to compete with the likes of Gmail and Microsoft Exchange, the company said Friday.

Pricing starts at $3 per user per month, undercutting Google Apps Premier Edition, which costs $50 per user per year.
