The Future of The Internet: Mind to Mind Communication?
Not long ago we gave you a look at a product manufactured by OCZ that made use of brainwaves as a futuristic but in-the-here-and-now game controller. Dubbed the NIA, for Neural Impulse Actuator, instead of buttons and joysticks, this device gave user the ability to control in-game movement with their mind. At the time, it sounded almost a little crazy but it worked, at least in novel sort of way, perhaps for some freaky party fun. In reality, for us, the product was more of an under-pinning

European Union Approves Microsoft "Choose Your Browser" Option
Microsoft and the EU are finally close to an agreement on how Windows 7's browser should be configured after months of negotiation. Initially, Redmond's idea was to ship the OS without a browser at all, a move the EU nixed, as it felt this would result in consumers being offered less value, rather than more. Microsoft's new idea, unveiled last July and batted back and forth several times since, was to include a "Choose Your Browser" option as part of Windows 7 startup. After further negotiation, that's the solution

Sony's 1.6lb. VAIO X Is World's Thinnest Notebook, Starts At $1300
Here goes Sony claiming another world's first. If you'll recall, the company made a pretty big fuss over its VAIO P when that launched back at CES. It refused to call it a netbook (probably due to the fact that Windows Vista was loaded on), but most everyone else assumed it really was the planet's most expensive (and oddly shaped) netbook. Now, there's the VAIO X, which Sony is using to yet again push the boundaries of what's possible in the laptop sector. Called the world's "lightest notebook," the VAIO X series

Acer Recalls Handful Of Aspire Laptops
Acer has issued a voluntary recall for some of its Aspire laptops. The affected models include the AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ, and AS3810TZG. Apparently, some of these laptops are experiencing an overheating of the microphone cable after repeated and extreme pressure is applied to the left palm rest. As a result, the unit case may become deformed and the system could malfunction. To help eliminate the risk of overheating, Acer has issued a voluntary safety recall to replace the microphone cable in the

Dr. Dre Tag Teams With HP For Limited Edition ENVY 15 Notebok
With HP's dedicated Voodoo PC line pretty much in the tank (or just phased out), it looks like Dr. Dre will be stepping in to fill the superstar void. Both Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine have jointly worked with HP in order to issue the HP Beats Limited Edition notebook, which is little more than a highly styled ENVY 15 with a thing for multimedia. The HP ENVY 15 Beats limited edition notebook features a sleek, piano black, high-gloss finish and signature Beats design as found in the "Beats by Dr. Dre" line of headphones,

Sony's VAIO L All-In-One PC Boasts 1080p Resolution, $1300 Starting Price
Sony's VAIO PC lineup has been growing larger over the years, and while the standout products are almost always within the notebook category, the newest is an all-in-one PC. A stylish all-in-one PC, might we add. The VAIO L Touch HD PC/TV is obviously designed to be multifaceted. On one hand, it's a standard touch-screen PC; on the other, it's an HDTV. Granted, it's probably only suited for bedroom use at 24", but with a 1080p native resolution, even Blu-ray Discs can be played back as the director intended.

European Union Approves Microsoft "Choose Your Browser" Option
After further negotiation, that's the solution the EU is expected to agree to. Consumers who purchase the OS retail will be shown a list of browsers, an explanation of what a browser is, and a link they can click on for more information; users will have the option of installing Internet Explorer plus another browser, or eschewing IE entirely. As for which browsers it might offer, Microsoft is likely to err on the side of caution; Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari are the likely suspects. It's implied (though not confirmed) that the "choose your browser" deal will stretch across all of the flavors of Windows Microsoft currently sells, although the focus to date has been on the upcoming Windows 7.
What EU customers might be seeing in a few short months.
An EU-MS agreement over browser selection would clear the company's table in one area, but Microsoft is already bracing for a fresh round of scrutiny. The company's advertising deal with Yahoo—announced earlier this year—still faces regulatory scrutiny in both the EU and the US; the two companies must prove that their agreement will not harm market competition.

The Future of The Internet: Mind to Mind Communication?
Their report goes on to offer: "While attached to an EEG amplifier, the first person would generate andtransmit a series of binary digits, imagining moving their left arm forzero and their right arm for one. The second person was also attachedto an EEG amplifier and their PC would pick up the stream of binarydigits and flash an LED lamp at two different frequencies, one for zeroand the other one for one. The pattern of the flashing LEDS is toosubtle to be picked by the second person, but it is picked up byelectrodes measuring the visual cortex of the recipient... The encoded information is then extracted from the brain activity of the second user and the PC can decipher whether a zero or a one was transmitted. This shows true brain-to-brain activity."
Here's a video demo of the experiment in action...
Dubbed BCI or Brain Computer Interface, the interface allows for B2B, or brain to brain communication, over the internet.آ We think the good folks at Southampton U should get together with the team at OCZ and work on productizing something.آ It might not be ready for prime time yet though.آ At this point the setup is only able to communicate one digit every three to four seconds.آ Hey, you've got to start somewhere.آ Remember that 14.4K modem?

5870s in Crossfire
I just finished building new rig with dual 5870's on a WS Supercomputer board. Am using a Cooler Master 1250 PS. 8GB of Corsair Dominator memory and Intel I7 870 stock no oc. Booted it up with 5870s connected via both Crossfire interconnects and no display. Decided to get it up and running first so took out one card and loaded Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit and got all drivers and updates done. Reinstalled second card and reconnected the two crossfire connectors, and still no display on boot.
Am I doing something wrong with the interconnects? Is there some setting in the bios that enables crossfire? Is there a specific DVI connector that has to be used? I have never used Crossfire have always used SLI cards. Any help appreciated.

Sony's 1.6lb. VAIO X Is World's Thinnest Notebook, Starts At $1300
Now, there's the VAIO X, which Sony is using to yet again push theboundaries of what's possible in the laptop sector. Called the world's"lightest notebook," the VAIO X series weighs just 1.6lbs. and isbarely over 0.5" thick. For those bad with math, that's about as thickas your BlackBerry. Yeah, wild! It's built with a carbon-fiber chassisand boasts a 16:9 aspect ratio display, and integrated Verizon Wireless3G is included to keep you connected on the go.
The screen itself is just 11.1" diagonally, but yet again Sony refusesto label this a netbook. The scratch-resistant LCD display is LEDbacklit, and it ships with a standard 3.5 hour battery and a superextended battery for up to 14 hours of usage. The keyboard is thechicklet style that many companies are going to (like Asus), and themultitouch trackpad ensures that you can use your fingers to zoomin/out and rotate images. Also, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS modules areincluded, not to mention a quick SSD, Windows 7 Home Premium and astarting price of $1300.
It's available to pre-order in black or gold starting today, andhonestly, the price is pretty reasonable given just how unique the formfactor is. Too bad the 2GHz Atom Z550 won't provide enough horsepowerto really show off 1080p content or heavy-duty gaming, but no onereally expects that from a machine this thin, anyway.

Macs Less Secure From Hackers And Viruses
Mac users who've been smug for years over how secure their OS is, could be in for a rude awakening if news out of the Black Hat Security Conference is true.
As Macs have slowly gained market share on PCs — 9 percent of the market in the second quarter of 2009 and growing — the interest in hacking them has increased. The advances in security for the computers, however, has not kept pace, experts said at the Black Hat security conference in Vegas.Apparently, this time, what happens in Vegas is not staying there, and the 4,000 "security professionals" (including hackers) who are attending the conference discussed the hacks and viruses that could end upآ making Macs just as vulnerable as Windows-based machines, if the bad guys start paying more attention to them. In fact, they said, Macs could be more vulnerable, because they have more code to potentially exploit.
Despite what Mac users like to think, Dai Zovi, a security researcher and co-author of "The Mac Hacker's Handbook," told Reuters in an interview, "There is no magic fairy dust protecting Macs."
At least three viruses infecting Macs have been identified in the past year, including one that was spread through pirated versions of iWorks and allows the hackers to take control of the Macs once they're infected. And Zovi demonstrated one "technique" that allows a hacker to take control of a computer's Safari browser if the computer's already been infected.
Apple is improving security measures, some said, but perhaps not fast enough.
"They are advancing. Our concern is that they are just not advancing as fast as they are gaining market share," Charlie Miller, co-author of "The Mac Hacker's Handbook," told Reuters.
