It's sort of funny. It's as if Asus read In-Stat's latest report before it even hit the presses. Who knows--maybe they did, or maybe they've just got a great pulse on the industry after sitting back and watching the likes of Amazon, Sony and numerous other Asian firms attempt to nail the whole e-book reader thing. The research firm's latest report explains that the e-book market is still growing in the US and around the globe, with the main areas for improvement being longer battery life, Internet connectivity

Homing Pigeon Faster Than Internet in Data Transfer
We've complained about the state ofآ US broadband before but we estimate that, in general, most data transfers are at least faster than this. In a race run in Johannesburg South Africa, a company proved it was faster to transmit data by carrier pigeon than to send it via the country's leading ISP.

Unlimited IT, frustrated by the speed of data transfer provided by ISP Telkom,آ tested and comparedآ the speed ofآ transferring 4 GB of data 50 miles via homing pigeon as well as the Internet. The pigeon won by a long shot, arriving in two hours, six minutes and 57 seconds. Meanwhile, the company, which regularly transfers data between its 11 call centers, managed to transfer only 4% of the data using Telkom's broadband services.

The time for the pigeon included unstrapping the card and downloading from the card to a computer. Winston is 11 months old, and has a Facebook page with over 3,000 fans, by the way.

To be honest, thisآ took place inآ South Africa.آ We're not talking the United States here, and not even North America.آ It is, in fact true, that American broadband isn't exactly up to par with other countries, however.آ In fact, if you look at recent studies, you can see just how far behind the United States is.آ A comparison done by Speed Matters and released in August showed that the average Internet download speed in the U.S. has increased by only 1.6 megabits per second (mbps), from 3.5 mbps in 2007 to 5.1 mbps in 2009.

That might sound good, but not when compared to South Koreaآ with an average data rate of 20.4 mbps, or four times faster than the U.S. The United States ranks 28th in the world in average Internet connection speeds, in fact.

Winston gets ready for flight

And truthfully, there is far more to broadband than just speed.آ What good is a 20.4 mbps speed if you run up against a cap?آ It just means you reach your limit faster.آ Yes, we're talking about you Time-Warner Cable and you, Comcast.آ Media providers continue to give us more options for viewing media through broadband, but ISPs continue to limit what we can do.آ Something has to give.

In an ironic development, several Winston fans noted that their internet connections were too slow to follow Winston’s race online.آ It's unclear where those followers were located.

What Needs To Hit eReaders? Web Browsers, E-mail And Big Batteries

The research firm's latest report explains that the e-book market is still growing in the US and around the globe, with the main areas for improvement being longer battery life, Internet connectivity and e-mail. Sounds pretty elementary, but by and large, today's batch of readers only feature a few (or one) of those, and not all three. Take the market-leading Kindle for example. It has integrated WWAN through Sprint, but that only enables users to download new books on the go. Users can't check their e-mail or surf the Web, which is evidently a real bummer to most. Stephanie Ethier, In-Stat analyst, had this to say about the findings:

"According to In-Stat’s most recent consumer survey, current e-book owners desire email capability in the next e-book they purchase. Longer battery life and Internet connectivity are the top two desired features among respondents who don’t currently own an e-book but plan to buy one in the next year."

The survey also found that Amazon is the leading brand of e-book owned, with the largest percentage of e-book owners (45.5%) spending between $9 and $20 a month on e-book content. As with Asus' forthcoming dual-panel reader, you can see that Web browsing would be entirely more feasible with two panes. We know battery life may take a hit, but we get the feeling that users would only tap into their reader's Internet browser occasionally, and most wouldn't use that browser more than a laptop or smartphone browser.

So, what about you? Would you be more apt to purchase an eReader if Web browsing was loaded on and you could check up on your e-mail between chapters?

Samsung Rogue And Intensity Texting Phones Land On Verizon
Without a doubt, the hottest phone to hit the Verizon Wireless airwaves recently is HTC's Touch Pro2, but for those not so interested in forking out big bucks for a powerful smartphone, the carrier has two other QWERTY-equipped phones available for the taking.

In a joint announcement with Samsung, the operator has announced the availability of two new messaging phones, the Samsung Rogue and Samsung Intensity. Starting with the former, the Rogue is a rather simple feature phone, boasting a full touch LCD, a horizontal slide-out, four-row QWERTY keyboard, threaded messaging and one-touch access to popular social networking widgets, including Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube and Photobucket. One neat extra seen on this phone is speech capabilities that enable customers to launch and control a variety of applications and services with simple voice commands as well as dictate text messages.

The Rogue will serve as the flagship phone for the company's new data pricing option, which many have grumbled about. Previously, VZW offered a $15/month unlimited data plan for data-using phones that weren't considered smartphones, but now anyone buying this will have to select between two options: a 25 MB for $9.99 monthly access option or a 75 MB for $19.99 monthly access option to couple with their Nationwide plan. Needless to say, that kind of move is perfect for generating heat from the general population.

Following are additional key features and specifications for the Samsung Rogue.

  • Available in bronze/black color
  • 3.1-inch ultra-brilliant touch screen
    • WidescreenWVGA AMOLED (Wide Video Graphics Array Active-Matrix OrganicLight-Emitting Diode) responsive touch screen results in one of thebrightest and clearest displays on a mobile phone in the United States
    • Slide out horizontally to reveal a four-row QWERTY keypad
  • Full HTML Web browsing capabilities with one-touch access to social networking sites via shortcut widgets
  • Full messaging suite including SMS, MMS, Mobile IM, Mobile Email and Corporate Email
  • 3.0 megapixel camera with flash and video capture and on-device editing capabilities
  • Supports Verizon Wireless services including V CAST Music with Rhapsody, V CAST Video, and Visual Voice Mail
  • MediaCenter-capable -- downloadable games, ringtones, wallpapers,location-based services, such as VZ Navigator(SM) and Chaperone(R), andmore
  • Pre-loaded games including "NEED FOR SPEED(TM) Undercover," "Resident Evil: Degeneration," and "Tetris(R) and Dice"
  • microSD(TM) card slot with support for up to 16 GB (card purchased separately)
  • FileViewer can view Microsoft(R) Word, Microsoft(R) Excel(R), Microsoft(R)PowerPoint(R) and Adobe(R) PDF documents stored on a memory card

Moving on, there's the Intensity, which packs a pretty dominating name to say the least. Obviously designed for thumbs, this text-friendly handset slaps a traditional T9 keypad on the front as well. Clearly it won't handle web browsing nearly as well, but general texting, IM and such should do fine.

Following are additional key features and specifications for the Samsung Intensity.

  • Available in a Charcoal Grey color in all sales channels and available in Flamingo Red online only at www.verizonwireless.com
  • 2.1-inchdisplay with horizontal slide-out four-row QWERTY keypad with dedicatedMessaging key and Favorites key for easily texting and calling friendsand family
  • Mobile Web browser for Internet access
  • Music player
  • Full messaging capabilities including Mobile IM; Mobile Email; Chat; and text, picture, and voice messaging
  • 1.3 megapixel camera with Night Shot, Self Timer, Multishot and Shutter Sound selection
  • Compatible with PC client for V CAST Music with Rhapsody (over-the-air downloads are not supported on the Samsung Intensity)
  • Voicecommands such as Voice Dial, Menu Readout, Digital Dial Readout, TXTMessage Readout, Call Announcement, My Verizon, and Help
  • Media Center-capable -- downloadable games, ringtones, wallpapers, location-based services, such as VZ Navigator(SM), and more
  • microSD(TM) card slot with support for up to 16 GB (card purchased separately)

The Samsung Rogue is available today for $99.99 after a $100.00 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement, and the Samsung Intensity in Charcoal Grey is available today for $29.99 after a $50.00 mail-in rebate with the same 2-year deal.

AMD Gets Clevo Distribution Deal, Expanding To Emerging Markets
Intel may still have the lion's share of the market in the microprocessor realm, but AMD isn't doing too bad for itself these days either with all things considered. Aside from introducing a litany of new technologies and devices over the past week, the company also took time to beef up its distribution strategy, which is something that could signal a broader push into more markets.

For far too long, it has felt as if AMD was content with second place. With releases like this, however, it's clear that the company is no longer satisfied with being associated with that notion. This past week, AMD nailed down an agreement with Clevo to distribute notebooks with its own chipsets to emerging mobile markets, and considering that AMD generally has the price advantage over Intel, it seems as if emerging markets are a great place for the company to grab hold of a nice chunk of market share before Intel swoops in. The details of this particular agreement are below, but again, it's the concept here that has us interested. We'd love to see AMD be more proactive about reaching out to markets--the world could definitely use more competition!

  • AMD (NYSE:AMD) today announced that Clevo, a global notebook manufacturer based in Taiwan, is now providing notebooks powered by AMD platform technology. Combining ATI Mobility Radeonâ„¢ HD 4570 graphics, the AMD Athlonâ„¢ 64 X2 processor and the AMD M690G chipset, these new entry-level notebooks deliver advanced performance and mobility benefits.
  • The new Clevo notebooks deliver the multi-tasking performance and graphics power people need when enjoying 3D applications like maps, movies, online videos, digital photos, video games, music and TV programs at home or on the go.
  • Continuing its long-standing technology partnership with Clevo, AMD focused on providing a highly differentiated solution that maps back to the top computing priorities. These include superior graphics and video capabilities and larger screen options than what is typically offered in similarly-priced netbook solutions for emerging mobile markets such as Brazil or Taiwan.
