Radeon 5870/5850 rumours?

http://www.hardware-infos.com/news.php?news=3184&sprache=1

http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=11135

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15433/1/

So it seems that AMD are taking their lovely 4870 and doubling its power for the 5870. Even the 5850 should provide a solid lead over the 4890 considering it's massive amount of shaders.

This may be the most interesting link if true though. Crysis finally playable maxed out on a single GPU?

http://bbs.chiphell.com/viewthread.php?tid=53938&extra=page%3D1

More news should come later today or tomorrow with AMD's event being today. But I still think we'll have to wait a week before official internet articles come up. At any rate, it looks like AMD will be brining the pain to Nvidia at the end of this month. GTX 295 performance in a single GPU for less money... bring it.

AMD Eyefinity Multi-Display Technology In Action

AMD ATI Radeon 4000-Series to Use GDDR5 MemoryBy now, many of you are probably aware that the launch of AMD's next-generation, DirectX 11-compliant graphics cards is imminent. Rumors about the launch and the products themselves has been trickling out for quite a while now and lots of information--some right and some wrong--is already available at various places around the web. While we can't disclose any detailed specifications or product specifics just yet, we do have some information about a new feature being implemented in the next-gen Radeons that we are able to share with you now.

The feature is called Eyefinity and what it does in essence, is allow for multiple monitors to be used as a single display. As it stands today, for the most part, when multiple monitors are connected to a single PC, those monitors are recognized as independent displays and can be configured for desktop spanning or mirroring, etc. With Eyefinity, however, the displays are arranged in a single group (or in multiple groups) and they are treated as a single display by the OS.

آ آ آ
AMD Eyefinity Multi-Display Technology In Action

Eyefinity is enabled through a combination of hardware and software being developed by AMD. On the hardware front, AMD's upcoming Radeons will sport between 3 and 6 display outputs of various types, DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, etc. And those outputs will be managed by software currently dubbed SLS, or Single Large Surface. Using the SLS tool, users are able to configure a group of monitors to work with Eyefinity and essentially act as a single, large display.

11,520 x 4,800 - 55.3 megapixels, Four Cardsآ - High res?آ Got that...

We had a chance to experiment with Eyefinity earlier and came away impressed. In a private demo, representatives from AMD configured a group of six, 30" Dell 3008WFP panels as a single display, in a 3 x 2 arrangement, with a resolution of 7680 x 3200--that's about 24.6 megapixels if you do the math.آ Powering the displays was a SINGLE graphics card, with a SINGLE GPU. The Windows desktop functioned as one monolithic surface, with all of that expansive resolution available to the user. What was more impressive than that though, was gaming on the six screens. We had a chance to play an upcoming DX11 racing game, Dirt 2, at 7680 x 3200 with perfectly acceptable frame rates--a hint at the power of AMD's upcoming next gen Radeon graphics cards. We also spent some time gaming across three 30" displays in a 3 x 1 configuration with Left 4 Dead and have to say it absolutely changes the experience for the better. Even Francis would like it.

Upcoming Samsung Thin-Bezel Displays

At the time of launch, Eyefinity will support single-GPU configurations for gaming, but we're told CrossFire support will be coming at some point in the future as well.آ The technology will require that at least one of the displays be equipped with a DisplayPort connection.

We've also been informed that AMD has partered with some display makers, like Samsung for example, that will be introducing new displays with ultra-thin bezels, designed with Eyefinity in mind.

We will have more news regarding AMD's next-gen Radeons in the not too distant future, so stay tuned to HotHardware for the full scoop.

Gmail Integrates Google Voice Voicemail Playback
Google continues to try to make Gmail its centralized location for all things Google. The latest addition to Gmail, via Google Labs, is Google Voice integration into Gmail.

Google Voice, nee GrandCentral and purchased by Google, is a service that allows users to give out one number and have it ring another, "real" number, or even multiple number, or even go straight to voicemail.آ Certain features allow you to SMS or call using that number.

Previously, or without the Labs feature, called "Google Voice player in mail," when you would receive an email from your Google Voice account alerting you to a voicemail, along with an automated transcript of the voicemail, there would be a link to play the message. However, that opened a new page or tab in your web browser.

Now, when you click "Play message," the player appears below the message and viola!

Obviously, this is not a deal-breaker, but it's still nice to not have to work in a different tab or window to listen to your voicemail. To enable the feature, in Gmail, click Settings, Labs, look for "Google Voice player in mail," select the appropriate radio button, and save. In most cases, that's it, but we've noticed sometimes that Gmail requires you to logout, and back in again to enable a Labs feature.

Of course, Google Voice is still available only via invitation, which limits how many people can use, or test this Labs feature. Still, they are rolling out new invites at a decent pace, so if you want, you can request one here.

Hitachi Serves Up Two New 1TB CinemaStar Hard Drives
It seems like announcing new hard drives is just "the thing" to do this month, so we guess we'll pocket our shock seeing yet another outfit introduce yet another hard drive. This time, it's Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) rolling out the CinemaStar family of 3.5" hard drives, which is based on 500GB per platter technology and definitely makes a mark in the desktop HDD space.

The lineup consists of the 1TB CinemaStar 7K1000.C and the 1TB CinemaStar 5K1000 CoolSpin, with each engineered to "handle the most demanding high definition (HD) video streams and offer reliable performance, large capacity, quiet operation, advanced AV features, and low power and temperatures that help manufacturers meet design, price and performance objectives for their consumer electronics devices."

As for the latter drive in particular, the new CinemaStar 5K1000 family features the company's CoolSpinTechnology, which relies on motor speed optimization to provide abalance of performance, power utilization and acoustics. By tuning themotor to make the drive spin slower, thereby reducing harmonicresonance, theCinemaStar 5K1000 is nearly silent at 2.4 bels during operation, draws 3.3 watts or less idle power and generates less heat, but in doing so it takes a hit on performance.

In addition to SmoothStream, the new CinemaStar family integrates a few other features that are found on all Hitachi drives:

  • SMART command transport to optimize the drive settings for best video streaming performance
  • Advanced auto power management with multiple power mode options so that performance requirements can be achieved using the lowest possible energy expenditure
  • Expanded temperature range of 0-70oC (CinemaStar 5K1000) and 0-65oC (CinemaStar 7K1000) in operating mode to enable fan-free, quiet DVR designs, which is important for drives that often “liveâ€‌ in a consumer’s bedroom
  • Intelligent idle time functions that maintain customer data signal quality for reliable long-term storage
  • Advanced drive mechanics, resulting in a drive rating of 1.2 million hours MTBF2, for the grueling 24x7 operation that is commonplace among music- and movie-loving consumers
  • Hitachi patented load/unload ramp mechanism that helps prevent disk wear and protects the disk during non-operation
  • Thermal fly-height control for enhanced drive reliability during lengthy video encoding/decoding sessions; especially relevant today when HD movies can reach more than three hours in length

The CinemaStar 7K1000.C and 5K1000 will be available in volume starting Q4, but pricing has yet to be revealed.

Hi new here and have a question...

Hello All,

I am new to this forum and I just would like some of your opinions about my next computer build.

I am in the middle of getting all the parts together for a new PC. I use it for gaming, web surfing, video stuff, etc. The parts I have so far are as follows:

case: COOLER MASTER COSMOS

CPU: intel core I7 920

RAM: 6GB OCZ Plat.

DVD RW: SAMSUNG 20X w/ lightscribe

It is not much, but it is a start. What I am asking mainly is I am not sure where to go on the video cards. I would like an SLI/Crossfire setup, but which does everyone like as far as bang for the buck? I am thinking about 2x 4850 or 4870's

I am going to order the HX series 850 Watt power supply by corsair and I am using 2x 36gb 10k rpm raptors in RAID, I like them so I am going to get 2X 150GB velociraptors this time.

My rig now is a P4 2.4 that I run at under 3.0. I am not going to overclock this one that much, but maybe a bit. So that is my story, let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks,

Mike

AT&T, Sprint Announce New Plans To Convince You They're The Best
Sprint and AT&Thave announced dueling phone plan changes geared toward making you feelyou as if you can call anyone, anywhere, anytime and not pay an extracent.

Sprint's plan is moving past its "calling circles" and is called the Any Mobile,Anytime plan. Basically, it's unlimited calling between mobile phones,no matter the service provider, within the United States. The marketingtag is that users can "cut the cord and save money," implying this ishow and why consumers should finally get rid of their landlines. Nosmall point, seeing as Sprint used to hold a relatively major portionof the landline long distance market. While it still offers residentiallong distance service, its share of the mobile market is its main focusthese days. Plus, the company has offered long-distance via theInternet.

The Any Mobile, Anytime plan is part of the SprintEverything Data plans, which start at $69.99 (for 450 minutes ofcalling time - want 900 minutes? That'll cost you another $20.). Theyhave unlimited text, picture and video messaging, as well as unlimiteddata services, which include email/Internet service, Sprint TV,streaming music and exclusive apps such as NFL Mobile Live and NASCARSprint Cup Mobile. There are rates, too, for families. A family of fourwould pay the equivalent of $42.50 per person, after adding in theextra two phones, for 1,500 minutes.

And just to keep track ofsuch things, Sprint's works on the Palm Pre and the soon-to-come HTCHero, as well as the Blackberry Tour.

Not to be outdone,AT&T launched its "A-List with Rollover," which gives you theability to choose five numbers in the U.S. you can call and not use upany of your minutes, whether or not they're on AT&T. The "Rollover"part is the reminder that any minutes you don't use, you don't lose, soyou can sort of double-dip, the company said. Anyone with an individualNation plan costing $59.99 or more can use this plan.

Families with AT&T plans of $89.99 or more can designate 10 numbers domestically for their VIPs.

You have to create your A-List on AT&T's web site.Fortunately, the numbers can be changed online whenever you want, so ifyou break up with your significant other, you can take him or her offthe list and put on your new sweetie. Or put your best bud back on thelist.

AT&T also announced the rollout of its High Speed Packet Access 7.2 technology, which is supposed to "provide a considerable speed boost"to the company's 3G mobile broadband network.

Basically, theHSPA will add capacity to support what is a now sometimes overloadedmobile data network and supposedly will meet the demands of a future 4Gnetwork. Six cities will be the beneficiaries of the HSPA for starters:Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami. Initialservice should be available there by year's end. By the end of nextyear, 25 of the nation's largest 30 markets will have the service, and90 percent of AT&T's network will have it by the end of 2011.

Theoretically, the upgraded network will have peak speeds of 7.2Mbps, but AT&Tsays customers typically will experience slower speeds, depending inpart on location, device used and network traffic at that time.

AT&T also will have six smartphones and two LaptopConnect cards compatible with the new technology by the end of this year.

TheHSPA rollout will be accompanied by an additional "backhaul" to thewireless network, beefing up the network's connections and backbone, the company said. That backhaul will support not only HSPA but also 4GLTE, which is scheduled for trials in 2010 and release in 2011.
