Need a simple Linux OS

I am unfamiliar with using Linux (or any of the kernal variants), but I would like to set-up a platform that will run without any maintenance after I give it to my friend for her birthday (my fiance's roommate since she will need computer after my fiance becomes my wife). She is not be planning on buying any Windows games, and I am aware of software like WINE that can play windows games but at a decreased performance.

The major thing is that it must be able to run Microsoft Office 2007 for her college stuffs. I have seen nice online replacements but do not know how well they work. Here is one called Live Documents. Any informed help would be greatly appreciated since I am so unfamiliar. The free-er the better but i do not know if it is compatible (I also need a compatible media player)...

***Live Documents is great for those who have not found this wonderful site yet.***

I basically would like to set-up her computer to be able to connect the internet with IE (blah, i know but she wants it), write papers and powerpoints, and play DVD's and CD's. I would like it to be compatible both hardware and software wise (things like adobe flashplayer and wireless adapter), and run trouble-free (as much as possible since I will probably be tech support). The current system has the free Windows 7 RC but that will obviously need to change next year.

Much thanks

VIA's Eden CPU In Fujitsu FUTRO S100 Thin Client

We can remember a time when VIA was rarely mentioned when talking CPUs, but now the company has made a ferocious comeback that has its processors slipping into netbooks, small form factor PCs and now, Fujitsu thin clients.

Starting today, Fujitsu will utilize VIA's Eden ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processor for its next generation FUTRO thin client series. Said chip will provide 500MHz of power with a low TDP of just one watt. The first FUTRO to featur ethe chip will be the S100, a completely fanless and silent thin client and virtual workplace solution.

VIA's angle is that more and more companies are selecting its low-power CPUs due to the benefits of going green, and in fact, the entire S100 system under full load will only eat up 11 watts. Richard Brown, Vice President of Marketing, VIA Technologies, didn't hesitate to brag about the occasion:

"Our VIA Eden ULV processors allow the creation of a new class of fanless and silent devices that are today seeing significant growth in the enterprise. The FUTRO thin client series from Fujitsu represents the leading edge of energy-efficient client computing, something we are proud to be a part of."

The Fujitsu FUTRO S100 thin client is designed for server-based computing and virtual workplace solutions and contains no moving parts, and aside from the 500MHz CPU, you'll also find a VIA VX800 media system processor, two USB 2.0 sockets, a VGA port, fast Ethernet and flash-based storage. There's also VIA's own Chrome9 HC3 graphics set and compatibility with a range of server client infrastructures including Linux-based eLux RL and eLux Lite, VMware, Citrix and Windows CE 6.0. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but it's available now for consumers who inquire.

The new iPod nano is currently available in an 8GB model for $149 and a 16GB model for $179. Nine color options are available.

The new iPod touch didn’t get a major overhaul, but prices have come down and since the new models can run OpenGL 2.0, there’s a good chance the player uses the same CPU as the iPhone 3GS. Contrary to all of the rumors, there is no camera on the new iPod touch. Current models include the 8GB model for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399.

Last, but not least, Apple’s iPod classic got bumped up to a160GB version for $249 and Apple’s iPod shuffle is now available for as little as $59 in five colors. A new, all stainless steel 4GB Special Edition will also be available exclusively from the Apple Store for a premium price of $99. Apple has also promised that more iPod shuffle-friendly headphones will be available soon.

The current crop of web browsers are total crap. Let me explain...

Today's web browsers seem to be still mired in the Internet of five years ago. Back then, the browser wars were in full swing, and different browsers tried to lock you into their view of the Internet universe. Today's web is a multifaceted content multiverse. Yet despite common features like tabbed browsing, today's browsers still try to lock you in. Some sites are only viewable in Internet Explorer. Firefox locks you in with the vast array of cool plugins. Google Chrome grabs you with its integration into the Googleverse, particularly Google Apps. Apple's Safari appeals to Mac and iPhone owners. It's a ridiculous, fragmented state of affairs.

As I write this, I have two different browsers open: Firefox 3.5 and the beta of Google Chrome 3.0. Occasionally, I even fire up Internet Explorer 8.0, whose user interface is arguably clunkier than either Firefox or Chrome. I’m thinking about installing Apple’s Safari as well...

So many browsers, so little time.آ Needless...

Western Digital Intros 640GB 9.5mm Hard Drive For Notebooks
It's not unusual for competitors to attempt to keep up and one-up each other, and that's exactly what's going on here with Western Digital's latest hard drive. Shortly after Samsung and Toshiba introduced 640GB mobile hard drives, WD has stepped forward to do likewise.

Announced today, the outfit's 9.5mm high 2.5" 640GB HDD has started shipping in volume, with the 'Scorpio Blue 640' expected to hit notebooks in short order. The real news here is the 9.5mm height, which is an industry standard; most oversized notebook HDDs are slightly larger, meaning that they can't actually fit inside most laptops without some modification. The new WD Scorpio Blue 640 GB drive has a 30 percent reduction in overall power consumption from the previous generation WD Scorpio Blue, and it should be available now for just $149. A few of the standout features are listed below:

Features of the WD Scorpio Blue include:
  • آ آ آ WhisperDrive(TM) - WD's exclusive WhisperDrive technology combines state-of-the-art seeking algorithms to produce one of the quietest 2.5-inch drives available;
  • آ آ آ ShockGuard(TM) - Leading-edge ShockGuard technology combines firmware and hardware advancements to meet the highest combined shock tolerance specifications required for mobile and notebook applications; and
  • آ آ آ IntelliSeek(TM) - A unique feature, IntelliSeek technology calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration. For a demonstration on IntelliSeek, visit the WD Web site at http://www.wdc.com/en/flash/index.asp?family=intelliseek.

How Much Is My Rig Worth Now?

Okay, so I'm lookin' to sell the rig I have now around November during the Holiday Season and then use that money to take advantage of all the sales that are going on then. So here are my specs, as well as everything I'll be selling

nVidia GTX 260 (Core 192)

6GB DDR2 1066RAM

Intel E7200 (With Artic Cooling's Freezer 7 Pro)

500 Watt Rosewill PSU

320GB Hardrive

CD Burner/DVD Drive

Older Full Tower ATX (Has some marker on it, but I'll be cleaning that off.)

Encore Wireless N Card

Dual 22" Monitors (Auxilary Monitor has a nick in it about the size of a mouse pointer on the far right, and the main one has a dead pixel, I barely notice it though and I'm very picky wiith that kind of thing...)

So I was thinking with the monitors it'd be worth about $700, and without I could sell her for $500.
