Time Inc Explores Bid For Yahoo's Core Business
An anonymous source "familiar with the situation" claims that Time is looking into acquiring Yahoo's core internet business. I'm not sure why Time is out shopping for companies like MySpace and Yahoo, but they all seem right for each other. Don't they?

Time Inc has been reaching out to bankers on pursuing a deal with Yahoo, according to the source, who wished to remain anonymous, not being permitted to speak to media. Time Inc, which has seen print advertising dollars dry up in recent quarters, has been trying to boost its digital presence through acquisitions of online properties, saying this month it would buy social networking pioneer MySpace.

Teen Who Posted Viral Video Victim Of Swatting
The saddest thing about this story? It's not the fact that someone could have been shot and killed. It's not that valuable police resources are being wasted. It the last sentence in the article that states "making a hoax call to police is a misdemeanor that can carry a sentence of up to a year in prison." Really? That's it?!?

The teenager who filmed the viral "Damn Daniel" video and posted the clip on Twitter was the victim of a bogus emergency call that prompted police to swarm his family's Riverside home. Police responded around 1 a.m. Tuesday after they received reports that someone at a residence on Hamilton Drive had shot their mother with an AK-47.

Where, When, And Why Microsoft Collects Your Data
Want to know where, when and why Microsoft collects your data? This guy says that it's a little more complicated than "whenever it wants."

How does Windows 10 telemetry really work? It's not a state secret. I've gone through the documentation and sorted out the where, when, and why. If you're concerned about private documents accidentally leaving your network, you might want to turn the telemetry setting down.

Somebody Actually Made A Networked Trash Can
This might actually be a pretty good idea for trash cans in big cities. I'm not sure where else it would be practical though.

OK, stop snickering -- it actually could be useful. Not so much for your house, but in cities that need to know which cans need to be emptied pronto. A monitor keeps track of how full a trash can is and sends that status over Sigfox's network. When the bin is getting full, the city knows where to send the collectors. Barcelona is installing about 200.

ASUS Settles FTC Charges Over Insecure Home Routers
Taiwan-based computer hardware maker ASUSTeK Computer, Inc. has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that critical security flaws in its routers put the home networks of hundreds of thousands of consumers at risk. The administrative complaint also charges that the routers' insecure "cloud" services led to the compromise of thousands of consumers' connected storage devices, exposing their sensitive personal information on the internet. The proposed consent order will require ASUS to establish and maintain a comprehensive security program subject to independent audits for the next 20 years.

More Support For Justice Department Than For Apple
A national survey by the Pew Research Center found that more people support unlocking that iPhone to assist the FBI than those who oppose it. There are a lot of factors involved in how people are choosing sides, everything from type of phone you own to political affiliation played a part in how people responded to the poll.

As the standoff between the Department of Justice and Apple Inc. continues over an iPhone used by one of the suspects in the San Bernardino terrorist attacks, 51% say Apple should unlock the iPhone to assist the ongoing FBI investigation. Fewer Americans (38%) say Apple should not unlock the phone to ensure the security of its other users' information; 11% do not offer an opinion on the question.

Avast Wi-Fi Hack Experiment Finds "Reckless" User Behavior
I would make fun of these people but, the truth is, we've all logged on to some unknown wi-fi network when we really needed it.

For the experiment, Avast researchers set up Wi-Fi networks next to the Mobile World Congress registration booth at the Barcelona Airport. The Wi-Fi network names were "Starbucks", "Airport_Free_Wifi_AENA" and "MWC Free WiFi" — Wi-Fi names (SSIDs) that are either commonplace or that look like they were set up for the congress visitors. In just 4 hours, Avast saw more than 8 million data packets from more than 2,000 users. To protect people's privacy, the researchers scanned the data, but did not store it.

Bill Gates Disputes Report That He Backs FBI in Apple Case
Bill Gates is taking issue with recent reports claiming he backs the FBI in its case against Apple. Gates says he isn't taking sides but he believes in a more balanced approach to the matter:

Still, Gates took a more moderate stance than some of his counterparts in the tech industry, not fully backing either the FBI or Apple but calling for a broader "discussion" on the issues. "I do believe that with the right safeguards, there are cases where the government, on our behalf — like stopping terrorism, which could get worse in the future — that that is valuable." But he called for "striking [a] balance" between safeguards against government power and security.
