Chicago mayor apologizes, protesters urge he resign

Chicago
Mayor Rahm Emanuel, under heavy criticism for his handling of a police
shooting that resulted in the death of a black teen, gave an emotional
apology on Wednesday hours before angry crowds closed city streets while
demanding his resignation. Emanuel's speech was met with applause from
the City Council, but protesters said the city's actions do not go far
enough. Emanuel's speech comes after two weeks of protests in Chicago
following the release of a 2014 police squad car dashboard video showing
police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16
times.

California shooter plotted 2012 attack, senator says

California
shooter Syed Farook plotted an attack with an accomplice three years
ago but got "cold feet" after a wave of US counterterrorism arrests, a
senator said Wednesday. A longtime friend and neighbor of Farook's,
Enrique Marquez, told investigators of their aborted plot, said Senator
James Risch, who sits on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
"He has admitted that in 2012 they had something in mind and they didn't
do it because there had been some immediate arrests by the
counterterrorism people," Risch told CNN.

One dead, thousands without power after U.S. Pacific Northwest storms

By
Courtney Sherwood and Eric M. Johnson PORTLAND, Ore./SEATTLE (Reuters) -
An Oregon woman was killed in her bed early on Wednesday after a tree
crashed through the roof of her home as storms caused severe flooding,
power outages and evacuations across the U.S. Pacific Northwest,
authorities said. Portland has endured more than 5 inches of rain in
three days, nearly as much as falls in all of December in a typical
year, and Seattle exceeded its normal December rainfall tally in just 8
days, the National Weather Service said. The service said mountainous
areas of Oregon and neighboring Washington state, where Governor Jay
Inslee declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, have received more
than a foot of rain.

California shooters discussed martyrdom before meeting: FBI

By
Julia Harte and Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The couple who
massacred 14 people at a California holiday party were discussing jihad
and martyrdom online a year before they met in person, but there is no
evidence Islamic militants arranged their marriage to facilitate an
attack, FBI Director James Comey said on Wednesday. The Federal Bureau
of Investigation believes Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, the U.S.-born son of
Pakistani immigrants, and Tashfeen Malik, 29, a Pakistani native he
married in Saudi Arabia last year, were each inspired by Islamic
extremists before they became acquainted, he said on Capitol Hill. The
precise origins of the couple's indoctrination in extremist ideology
remain to be determined but appear to date back about two years, before
Islamic State "became the global jihad leader that it is," Comey said.

Planned Parenthood executives that the attack on the Colorado Springs
