Smartphone deals

iPhone and Android phone deals are on a lot of wish lists this Cyber Monday, and we're here to help point out the best bargains on AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint.
Apple's iPhone 6S on AT&T moves to the US carrier's monthly plan, so you don't have to pay for the phone upfront. It starts at $21.67 a month at Best Buy.
The new iPhone 6S on Verizon is sticking to the usual two-year contract plan through some retailers on Cyber Monday. That means it starts at $199 and up at Best Buy.
iPhone 6S on Sprint uses two-year contracts, though it sometimes offers lower monthly payments (which add up to more money over time). Best bet is to go with the just $99 deal at Best Buy that's expired after Cyber Monday.
The iPhone 6S deals are rare. Even Apple's official store doesn't give Cyber Monday discounts on its smartphone because, really, it doesn't have to. It's usually out of stock come Christmas, anyway.
LG V10 takes wide selfies, has high-end specs and comes in at a low on-contract Verizon price at $49 through Best Buy.
LG G4 is a bit smaller and easier to hold, and we love its curved design. On Cyber Monday, if you buy it with a two-year agreement, it comes with a $100 Best Buy gift card.
Get the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge unlocked for $500 off now only $539 at Target - plus, add Target's special code for another 15% off. It's out of stock now, but check back for availability.

Plus, the Moto 360 (2014), one of the best Android Wear smartwatches, is cheaper than ever and is now $149 at Motorola.

Cyber Monday: What is it?

Welcome to TechRadar's Cyber Monday deals homepage! More than just the day to recover from the Thanksgiving hangovers, November 30, 2015 is Cyber Monday, which is America's busiest online shopping day of the year.
Like many dates on the calendar, Cyber Monday is a marketing invention. It was coined in 2005 by Shop.org to encourage more people to shop online. It's safe to say it's done that: last year, US shoppers spent a record $2.68 billion, making Cyber Monday the biggest day in US online shopping history.
Retail consultancy Channel Advisor reports that Google Shopping was up 2.9% year on year, eBay 9.82% and Amazon 30.76%, and clicks on paid search ads jumped by a massive 60.56% compared to 2013.
Marketing experts Monetate, who work with some of the world's top brands, reported that traffic to US online retailers was up 11.8% year on year. Walmart reported that Cyber Monday 2014 was the biggest day for online orders in its entire history, and this year is expected to be bigger still.

Cyber Monday and Black Friday: what's the difference?

It's not just that they sit on either side of the appallingly named Sofa Sunday. Black Friday is dominated by technology, and by a handful of big-name retailers with deep pockets and big advertising budgets: Target, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and so on.
It's very hard for other retailers to stand out on Black Friday, so many of them don't bother. They offer their deals on Cyber Monday instead. When ecommerce provider EKMPowershop surveyed its small- and medium-sized business users about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it found that those retailers sold 29% more on the Monday than on the Friday.
It isn't just the size of the retailers that's different. It's what they do, too. While Black Friday is dominated by technology products, Cyber Monday is better for fashion, shoes and home electrical appliances.
For example in the last two Cyber Mondays, there were 45% more clothing deals than on Black Friday and 50% more deals on shoes. There are still plenty of tech deals around – firms such as Curry's discounted HDTVs and gadgets for the entire long weekend until stocks ran out – but the freshest deals tend to be in other sectors.
According to figures collated by ecommerce marketing experts Fresh Relevance, beauty sales were up 400%, gifts 300%, holidays 150% and home and garden items 150% on Cyber Monday 2014 compared to a normal Friday.
So if you're looking for a laptop, Black Friday's the day to do it. If you're looking for something from a designer or some great Christmas presents, you should wait until after the weekend.

The changing face of Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday began as a day when people went back to work, thought "aaagh! It's nearly Christmas!" and immediately started misusing their employers' computers to do online shopping.
Employers have cracked down on that, but it hasn't dented Cyber Monday's popularity. We're just shopping on our smartphones instead.
Last year Adobe reported that 19% of total online sales were made from mobile devices; Monetate's figures suggest that since 2013, smartphone use for Cyber Monday shopping is up 57%.
Even YouTubers like Cyber Monday...
YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NidQxwxHMqM
While this is all great news for us bargain hunters, though, it's not all good news for the retailers, because while the numbers are bigger, the average order value is going down – and it seems that rather than creating new demand, the Cyber Monday weekend is actually an exercise in foot-shooting for many online stores.
When marketing experts Verdict Retail analysed the effect of Black Friday and Cyber Monday last year they found that there was "no evidence that it stimulated demand;" by discounting their products, retailers sold stuff they would have sold anyway, but for less money.
That's led retailers, such as UK shopping giant John Lewis, to say "we've got to ask if it's right to concentrate trade so much in that one period." There will be bargains, but for many retailers they'll be carefully chosen ones - and retailers will use them as bait in the hope they can cross-sell and up-sell too.
There's also the issue of the Enormous Magical Sale That Goes On Forever, or EMSTGOF for short.
Amazon was the most obvious proponent of EMSTGOF, with a week of deals running up to Black Friday and another week – Cyber Week – beginning on Cyber Monday, but you can expect other EMSTGOF from other retailers too – not least because by spreading things out, they're not as prone to the traffic spikes that knocked so many retailers offline last Black Friday.
Walmart was one of several retailers that ran promotions before, during and after Black Friday and Cyber Monday (including a "Cyber Monday Evening Edition" for people coming home from work), and others are likely to follow suit.

How to get the best Cyber Monday bargains

Start early and start here. We'll be rounding up the very best Cyber Monday 2015 deals on this very page, and we'll point you to the ones that really do deliver bargains.
It's a good idea to do some homework, too; with some companies discounting almost everything - Brand View reports that Argos had discounted 93.3% of its tablets on Cyber Monday with average discounts of 21.5%, while Currys had 85.5% of its TV range on offer, with discounts averaging 19.8% - it's not a bad idea to study the shelves of your favourite online emporium to draw up a shortlist. There's a very good chance at least some of your shortlist will be offered at a lower price.
It's also worth installing the mobile apps for your chosen retailers. We don't think we'll see quite as many sites going offline due to excessive demand this year, but if you've recently tried to order an Apple Watch or iPhone 6S on launch day you'll already know that apps are often more reliable than the same firms' websites.
More than anything, it's important to set a budget and identify what you really want. There's no point bagging a bargain if the credit card interest is double the discount, or if it ends up gathering dust in a corner. Be careful out there.

Desktop Workstations

What comes to mind when we say workstation? If you're thinking some big, spaceship-like contraption, you'd traditionally be right. But these days, workstations are sleek and trendy machines that still provide intelligent performance for most applications. They're useful tools for designers, engineers, financial analysts and researchers running more demanding applications, like rendering complex graphics, financial analysis and computations and digital content creation. There are even a few amazing options that come in laptop form.
But, with so many on the market, what merits do the office "power users" look for when deciding upon which workstation is the best investment for an increase in productivity, limited downtime and improved reliability?
Update: A smartphone can't replace a laptop, let alone a desktop workstation, just yet, but Microsoft's latest Lumias come close. Thanks to a feature called Continuum in the Windows 10 Mobile operating system, the new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL allow business users to connect these smartphones to the optional display dock to get a full desktop UI on their monitors. You definitely won't get the power of a desktop, and app support is lacking at this time, but if you work inside Office 365 and live within the Microsoft Edge browser, this could be a lightweight desktop solution for busy business travelers.
Here are a few that we've reviewed that we recommend:

If you're holding onto AT&T's legacy unlimited data plan, prepare to pay more
If you're holding onto AT&T's legacy unlimited data plan, prepare to pay more
If you're still clinging to AT&T's legacy unlimited data, you're going to be charged an extra $5 per month starting February 2016.
AT&T confirmed to techradar that customers will see an increase from $30 to $35 per month for those still 'grandfathered' on its unlimited data plan. The increase was first reported by 9to5Mac.
Though AT&T is increasing the price of this plan for the first time in seven years, it's a plan that hasn't been offered to new customers for a few years now.
It's also, however, not the only carrier to increase its unlimited plan this year, as Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile also increased unlimited plans as well.
Carriers have been pulling away from unlimited data plans for a few years now, with T-Mobile and Sprint the only carriers now to offer an unlimited data plan to new customers in the US.
But with these price increases, will you still hold on to your unlimited option, knowing you'll never be able to sign on to it again under AT&T, or will you cave in to the more common tiered data allowance plans the carrier has been pushing?

Google's self-driving cars might be in for some Tesla magic
Google's self-driving cars might be in for some Tesla magic
While Google has previously said that it doesn't want to be a car maker, it looks like the search giant's self-driving plans are just heating up with its latest hire.
Tesla's former autopilot engineering manager, Robert Rose, now works for Google, according to his LinkedIn page and as spotted by 9to5Google.
According to Rose's LinkedIn, he worked as a software engineer for SpaceX before heading to Tesla, finishing up just after the launch of the company's autopilot and auto-steering features, which went live in October.

(Self-driving) car guy

While Rose's profile says simply that he will be working as a software engineer for Google Robotics, it's not confirmed that he'll be working on Google's self-driving cars.
Still, it's a pretty good bet he'll have his hand on the company's self-driving car, unless, of course, Google plans on building a rocket, which is a little more unlikely - though not impossible.
In any case, poaching talent between car companies building self-driving cars seems to have become common practice, with reports of Apple picking up ex-Tesla employees, and vice versa, and even Google picking up former auto manufacturer employees as well.

Ash Vs Evil Dead finally gets a groovy UK TV release date
Ash Vs Evil Dead finally gets a groovy UK TV release date
It's taken a while for Ash Vs Evil Dead to reach the UK but Virgin Media has revealed that there's not long to wait: the show will be available from December 1 and the good news is that the series will be available on demand.
Ash vs Evil Dead is one of those TV shows that has cult written all over it. Created by Sam Raimi and starring the ever-brilliant Bruce Campbell, the show is currently halfway through its season in the US and was commissioned for a second before the first episode was even aired.
Virgin Media nabbed the rights to the show back at the beginning of November and has been teasing about the show coming on to its service ever since.
Instead of adding the show to one of its channels, however, it has gone down the on-demand route.

Dead happy

This is something that's increasingly happening with the BBC offering iPlayer-only content, and even Sky offering on-demand-only boxsets.
"We are very excited about bringing Ash vs Evil Dead to the UK, exclusively for Virgin Media customers. This long-awaited and much anticipated series marks a step-change in our TV programming strategy and demonstrates the true potential for video on demand," said David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media.
Ash Vs Evil Dead will be available for free from December 1 for Virgin Media customers with More TV and above and in HD to TV XL subscribers. The first five episodes will be available on demand straight away then, in keeping with the US, episodes will be available weekly.

Oculus Rift release date: will we finally know on Thursday?
Oculus Rift release date: will we finally know on Thursday?
We're in for some Oculus news later this week. Could it be the Oculus Rift release date? Its price? Unfortunately, we'll just have to wait and see.
Geoff Keighley, a video game journalist and presenter, announced via Twitter that a "special announcement" by Oculus Founder Palmer Luckey is going down during The Game Awards, scheduled to air Thursday, December 3 at 9pm ET.
As to what the announcement could be, Luckey tweeted that it won't have to do with opening pre-orders for the long-anticipated Oculus Rift headset.
That said, an official release date for the Rift, which is still scheduled to launch sometime in Q1 2016, could very well be on the table.
Some other possibilities include new titles receiving Rift compatibility, support for the headset on new platforms, or how much one can expect to pay when the headset finally hits shelves.
The Oculus Rift began development in 2012 through Kickstarter, leading to Oculus VR to be purchased by Facebook in 2014. The Samsung Gear VR, an Oculus-powered VR headset that utilizes the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 phones came out earlier this month.
The Game Awards, produced and hosted by Keighley, will have its second-ever show aired live on multiple consoles and streaming services.
On top of the Oculus announcement, new information and footage for Far Cry: Primal, Mortal Kombat X, and Quatum Break are also in store.
  • Here's what we thought of Microsoft's AR viewer, HoloLens

Xbox One 500GB bundle with Assassin's Creed Unity adds last year's game in the Ubisoft franchise and retails for just $369 at Amazon.
Xbox One 1TB Rise of the Tomb Raider bundle is still available, but we could only find it in one store. Its price is $349 at Best Buy.
The Xbox One Elite bundle combines a 1TB console with the pro-level Xbox One Elite controller. It launches on December 1, but you can pre-order now for $499 at Amazon.
The cheapest Xbox One is at GameStop, which isn't always known for the best prices. It's inexpensive because it's pre-owned. It's in black for $299 at GameStop and white at $299 – also at GameStop.
Just in case this hot number sells out before Cyber Monday, there's another deal for a refurbished, black Xbox One on sale for $299 at Amazon.

Presto's Big Bang Theory involves launching an Android TV app
Presto's Big Bang Theory involves launching an Android TV app
Foxtel's streaming service Presto has been a little bit slow on the big screen app service rollout. After launching on Samsung Smart TVs and then expanding to Telstra TV, Presto users have otherwise had to rely on using a
Chromecast or Airplay for big screen enjoyment.
But that's all changed for some people today, as Presto has announced it has launched a native app on the Android TV platform.
Now, anybody with a TV running Android TV 5.0 and above can access the massive collection of Presto Entertainment programming.
Initially, that means Sony's 2015 lineup of Smart TVs, as well as the Google Nexus Player,
The news comes at the same time that Presto has rolled out its December lineup of exclusive content, including the entire back catalogue of The Big Bang Theory.

Best HTC One M9 deals

htc one m9 deals
The HTC One M9 is, firstly, a beautiful phone. Some say it's not a huge advancement on the HTC One M8 which preceded it but the company has switched the camera to a new, higher resolution version that aims to produce much better pictures than the M8 did.
HTC is a leader in design though, and its handsets are always solid, well-built and reliable - and this is the best ever. And let's be honest, if you're someone that works phones hard during their lifetime then you'll appreciate the tough metal body of the One M9 - and good news if you're after more data: we've got some ace deals for you.
The camera is, as we said, sharper by far than the dual snapper found in the M8. HTC also made the sensible decision to keep the microSD slot, something Samsung has removed from its recent Galaxy S6 phones.
It does have to be said that, while this phone is ideal for most people, you may want to consider the M8 which is now a great deal cheaper and offers a virtually identical design with many of the features that make HTC's handsets so attractive.

The UK's best HTC One M9 deal:

£249.99 upfront | TalkMobile | 500 minutes | 5000 texts | 1GB data - £10pm
Look, we know it's a lot of money upfront, but then after that - wow. With only a tenner a month for 1GB of data, this is a deal that costs less over the two years than some places are selling this phone for outright. With 500 minutes, you'll need to keep an eye on the allowance, but why you'd ever need more than 5000 texts is beyond us. Total cost over 24 months is £489.99.
line
Free phone | Vodafone | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | 6GB data | £35pmComing with cashback and a juicy 6GB of 4G data is Vodafone, with a lovely two months of unlimited data to start you off, and it still won't cost you a penny up front. We challenge you to break that much data in one month - the 6GB, not the unlimited bit. You still need to eat, goddamn it. Total cost over 24 months is £832.32.
line
Free phone | Three | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | unlimited data | £47pm
Get ready for this... get ready... Unlimited data! Seriously. That's a lot. A huge amount if you're someone who is always downloading something and doesn't want to worry about data limits. This isn't all that cheap (although it's a pound cheaper than last month) - but there's no worry you'll go over the limits... Total cost over 24 months is £1128
Now let's break down the best HTC One M9 deals by network…
htc one m9 deals
vodafone

Best HTC One M9 deals on Vodafone

Vodafone prides itself in coverage and quality - it's often a bit mean with data, but there are extras like Spotify and Sky Sports Mobile thrown in.
£59.99 upfront | unlimited minutes | unlimited texts | 2GB data - £30pm
A middle of the road deal that comes with a fairly decent slug of data, a dollop of unlimited business in the call and text arena and only £59.99 upfront. It's a nifty deal that will also come with 1GB of Wi-Fi hotspot access - for not much cash and a good set of allowances, this a good choice. Total cost over 24 months is £779.99.
line
Free phone | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | 20GB data | £46pmLOOK AT ALL THE DATA. THERE'S SO SO MUCH! And if you're thinking 'well, I'd like to start off with unlimited, actually - well, that's there too, for two whole months. It's not a cheap deal, true, but it's marginally cheaper than three's unlimited choice - plus comes with an automatic £25 cashback. Total cost over 24 months is £1079.
line
Free phone | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | 6GB data | £35pmComing with cashback and a good slab of 4G data is Vodafone, with a lovely two months of unlimited data to start you off, this phone won't cost you a penny up front. We challenge you to break that much data in one month - the 6GB, not the unlimited bit. You still need to eat, goddamn it. Total cost over 24 months is £832.32.

iPhone 6 deals on EE

Best HTC One M9 deals on EE

EE is the network to go to if you want high-speed 4G
£89.99 upfront | unlimited minutes | unlimited texts | 2GB data | £27.49pmEE goes straight in with the 2GB deals - no messing around with the pointless 1GB option. Really this is ideal if you plan to just generally browse the web on your commute and EE's 4G network remains one of the quickest out there. It's all about the gunmetal grey here - the smoothest of all the colour options. Total cost over 24 months is £749.75.
line
£9.99 upfront | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | 5GB | £32.49pmLet's go all out - this is where you're getting into the bigger leagues in terms of data allowances. On offer here we have 5GB and it's awesome having that much to play with per month - trust us. It's unlimited calls and texts too, with no upfront cost... a really cracking deal when you do the sums. Total cost over 24 months is £789.75
line
Free phone | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | 20GB data | £54.99pm
TWENTY GIGABYTES OF DATA! Seriously, if you're someone who is always downloading something then this tariff is absolutely the best possible for data. Three might offer unlimited data and free 4G but EE has far better speeds and broader coverage. This isn't all that cheap - although a now-dizzying £260 cashback helps... Total cost over 24 months is £1209.75
htc one m9 deals
iphone 6 deals on o2

Best HTC One M9 deals on O2

O2 is the network with extras, including the popular O2 Priority service
Free phone | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | 1GB of data | £32.50This deal hasn't really improved since last month. It's a reasonable price though, and was one of the cheaper ways to get hold on the HTC One M9 (although others are doing better now). We do urge caution, as always, on 1GB plans though as modern smartphones can eat a lot more than you think. Total cost over 24 months is £780
line
£39.99 upfront | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | 3GB data | £31pmThree gigabytes of data is a pretty good compromise, and here it's been dropped in price a fair bit - although you'll need to suck up a little bit up front. Once that's out the way though, you can get on with all the sweet, sweet browsing you'll be able to do, while chatting with whoever you fancy thanks to unlimited calls. Total cost over 24 months: £783.99
line
Free phone | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | 10GB data | £44pm
O2 does have some 10GB data deals, and this month the prices are a little lower, making them an excellent choice for data junkies. Everything else is free too, which means you're going straight in for all that sumptuous data - and it comes directly from O2 as well, which should make any contract negotiations easier next time around. Total cost over 24 months is £1056
htc one m9 deals
iphone 6 deals on Three

Best HTC One M9 deals on Three

Three is one of few providers that offers unlimited data, and Feel at Home is amazing for regular travellers.
Free phone | Three | unlimited calls | unlimited texts | unlimited data | £47pm
You're someone who doesn't want to worry about data limits. This isn't all that cheap - but there's no worry you'll go over the gigabyte barrier with this concoctio... plus you've got so much unlimited entertainment flooding into your phone that you'll be too busy to notice the cost. Total cost over 24 months is £1128
line
£59.99 upfront | Unlimited minutes | unlimited texts | 2GB of data | £34pm
2GB is a decent slug of data, although it's quite a pricey deal. We have done some digging and found this deal a lot cheaper this month though, as long as you're willing to pay a little upfront - and it's for the gun metal grey version, which we think is the best because it has some lovely rounded edges. Total cost over 24 months is £875.99
line
Free phone | 600 minutes | unlimited texts | 8GB of data | £39pmHere's a decent amount of data for you, and while it comes somewhat at the cost of the included minutes, this is still a great tariff for those who want to watch a lot of YouTube or listen to streaming music - and it's dropped by ANOTHER £1 this month. Not a lot, but that £24 could buy a Lego Star Wars set for someone this Christmas. Total cost over 24 months is £936.

The NSA is now prohibited from collecting phone data in bulk
The NSA is now prohibited from collecting phone data in bulk
The US National Security Agency (NSA) shut down its bulk phone data collection system yesterday following a deadline set by the passing of the USA Freedom Act.
As it currently stands, carriers such as Verizon and AT&T will still have customer phone metadata on hand, such as numbers and call duration. However, the NSA will no longer have nearly unlimited access to this data without first receiving a court order on a per-case basis, similar to a search warrant.
Although the Freedom Act has been law for six months, the NSA had a deadline of 11:59PM ET on November 28 in order to transition from its past program to a new one.
In addition to requiring permission to access phone data, the NSA must also increase transparency in the form of annual reports detailing how many requests were made.

Past come present

The Freedom Act was originally conceived in 2013 in response to the revelation of NSA programs storing massive amounts of personal data by Edward Snowden in June of that year. A major focus of the act regarded the NSA's phone collection cache program as detailed in Snowden's leaks.
Additionally, the passing of the Freedom Act tied into Section 215 of the Patriot Act, a major provision for warrant-less surveillance initiatives, which expired this past summer. The Freedom Act was not met without difficulties: there was showdown in the US Senate over the bill before it underwent revisions.
It's still unclear how the new legislation will affect government programs outside of the NSA's phone metadata repository. Other forms of wireless communication surveillance may still go relatively unchanged, as had been the case with the NSA shutting down a web surveillance program in 2011 ... because it found a better way to collect data.
