Hardware Roundup: Wednesday, September 2, 2015, Edition
The middle of the week is upon us, with several items for your viewing consideration. We have a look at Intel's Skylake line, with the 46 processors available getting a preview so you know what to expect in a new build or laptop. Their availability at (r)etailers is fast approaching, so this is a perfect way to have an idea ahead of time of what to get if you aren't going for the 6700K or 6600K. There is a review of the Noctua NH-C14S CPU cooler, a horizontal-style cooler that should be perfect for those without a lot of space in their case. For some storage needs, the Crucial BX100 250GB SSD gets tested to see how the new SSD stands up to the competition. Wrapping things up is a review of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, a tough smartphone that can withstand some punishment.

Making Embedded Systems More Efficient
More and more of the devices around us contain specialized embedded systems, including our cars and thermostats. Like many other technologies, they are a target for improving energy efficiency, especially those systems that may be difficult to provide power to. Researchers at North Carolina State University have recently found a way to improve the efficiency of embedded systems, while also reducing their cost.
To achieve the best efficiency for an embedded system, it is important to optimize the voltage it is receiving. Batteries tend to put out a higher voltage than this though, so a power converter is needed. The most efficient power converters are switch-mode converters and are made of two parts. One part is the power stage that controls the storage and flow of power while the other part is the controller. What the North Carolina researchers have done is pull the software for the controller into the embedded system's processor. This makes it possible for developers to precisely control how the controller reacts when different system functions are activated, as it is all going through the same chip.
The researchers built a pair of prototype converters and one had 90% efficiency and the other had 95% efficiency, and both only cost around 50 cents. This combination beats out all other converters as they are either more expensive, less efficient, or both.

New Viper 4 3400MHz Dual Kit Announced by Patriot
Patriot, a leading manufacturer of computer memory, SSDs, mobile accessories, and USB and flash memory, has announced a new 3400MHz dual kit that falls within the Viper 4 DDR4 product line. The latest product from Patriot, which is designed for the latest Intel Skylake core processor and Z170 motherboards and comes in a 2x4GB configuration, consumes just 1.35V, features a custom heat shield, and offers 16-18-18-36 timings. Patriot’s Viper 4 offerings are compatible with XMP 2.0, which allows users to utilize the predetermined memory profile while still being able to manually modify settings, if they should choose to do so. The Vice President of Engineering at Patriot, Les Henry, noted that the Viper 4 3400MHz dual kit is the fastest Viper kit yet, and that "In order to hit these speeds, Patriot will prescreen each IC prior to building the modules to ensure stability."
Patriot is expected to make the Viper 4 dual kits, which are available in speeds ranging from 2400MHz to 3400MHz, available to consumers on September 4. The kits will feature an MSRP of $64.99 through $169.99 and will be offered in stores and at online locations to include Fry’s Electronics, Newegg, and Amazon.
