Switzerland Uses NVIDIA GPUs to Forecast Weather
The Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology has replaced its current CPU-based weather forecasting system with an NVIDIA GPU based supercomputer which offers "40 times higher performance." This moves makes it the first national weather service to use GPUs to "improve its daily weather forecasts," a move which NVIDIA believes will be replicated in the future. The tremendous computing power of GPUs will enable forecasters to improve their models by increasing their resolution. Increased resolution is expected to improve short range forecasts, up to 24 hours, and medium range forecasts, up to five days. Weather models work by using fluid motion and thermodynamics equations to predict future patterns based on current conditions. More precisely, a model "divides a forecast region into a grid, and the equations are solved within each grid cell with interactions between the neighboring cells to compute a prediction. The closer grid points are to one another, the higher the overall model resolution, which leads to increased realism in the final forecast."

G.SKILL Announces Mechanical Keyboards
G.SKILL Announces Mechanical Keyboards
G.SKILL is the latest company to throw its hat in the increasingly crowded mechanical keyboard ring, adding two more options with the RIPJAWS KM780 RGB and MX. Both boards utilize Cherry MX switches in Blue, Brown, or Red options. The switches are directly mounted through a 2mm aluminum top plate to ensure the keys stay in place for a "solid typing experience." G.SKILL includes multiple extra keycaps designed to replace your most commonly used gaming keys "for fast tactile recognition without looking away from your game." The keyboards are rounded out with backlit media control buttons, digital LED volume display, and six programmable macro keys. Both keyboards are currently available with Cherry Red or Brown switches at a price of $119.99 for the KM780 MX and $159.99 for the KM780 RGB. Keyboards with Cherry Blue switches will be available at a later date.

CD Projekt RED is Not for Sale
CD Projekt RED is Not for Sale
Yesterday a rumor emerged about how EA was supposedly meeting with CD Projekt RED for a potential acquisition or publishing deal. The rumor came about from an apparent employee who provided a payslip as proof of working at the Polish developer, and heavily suggested EA was planning to purchase CD Projekt RED. There were some issues with that, namely with CD Projekt maintaining a firm stance as an independent and how founder Marcin Iwinski had no knowledge of any kind of a meeting. Well, today the developer wants to put any aspect of this rumor firmly to bed as being a pure fabrication. Iwinski stated there are no discussions with any company to purchase either CDP or GOG (its digital game store), and the payslip was a fake. Hard to get any clearer than that.
So, CD Projekt RED is not being sold to EA, nor is any part of the company being partitioned off. It was just some punk trying to stir up some excitement with an unfounded rumor. Iwinski is heavily against being part of any large corporation, such as EA, and is more than happy with CDP's rebel status. Things will keep on going as they always have been at CD Projekt RED, with working being done on the two The Witcher 3 expansions (Hearts of Stone arrives October 13) and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.

Anti-Counterfeit 3D Barcode System Developed
Counterfeit products can be lead to many serious problems, such as insecure computer hardware, incorrect medication, and more. To fight these issues, many anti-counterfeit devices have been developed, but these are all applied to the packaging and after production. This makes it easier to copy the devices, but researchers at the University of Bradford and Sofmat Ltd have a new solution that can be applied to the product itself.
The new system applies a 3D barcode directly to the device that is so small, you can neither see nor feel it. To create the barcode, pins attached to micro-actuators are used and each step for the pins represents a letter or number. The steps are just 0.4 microns apart, making the accuracy of the device very important, but its strength is also important so the position does not shift during use. Reading the barcode requires special equipment currently, such as a white light interferometer or a laser-scanning confocal microscope, but the researchers are working on a laser scanner that can wireless connect to a phone or tablet.
The prototype the researchers built has a four pin array, so it has 1.7 million possible configurations, but future versions could have far more. Also it should be possible to have patterns imprinted onto the pin heads, further increasing security, and by changing the pins' positions for individual products will improve it even more. Though developed to work with plastics and injection molding, it is possible to use this system to stamp or emboss the codes onto other products.
