The Air Force Will Have Combat Lasers On Its War Planes By 2020
I only have one question. Which companyNorthrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, or Boeingis best capable of creating the Vic Viper?
These armaments, dubbed directed-energy weapons pods, will be mounted on American warplanes and serve to burn missiles, UAVs -- even other combat aircraft -- clean out of the sky. "I believe we'll have a directed energy pod we can put on a fighter plane very soon," Air Force General Hawk Carlisle said at a Fifth-Generation Warfare lecture during the Air Force Association Air & Space conference earlier this week. "That day is a lot closer than I think a lot of people think it is."

US, China Seek Deal On Cyberspace Attacks
Despite ongoing negotiations between the superpowers toward an arms control accord for cyberspace, espionage and theft will likely go on as usual.
The agreement being negotiated would also not appear to cover the use of tools to steal intellectual property, as the Chinese military does often to bolster state-owned industries, according to an indictment of five officers of the People's Liberation Army last year. And it is not clear that the rules would prohibit the kind of attack carried out last year against Sony Pictures Entertainment, for which the United States blamed North Korea. That attack melted down about 70 percent of Sony's computer systems.

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10547
Aside from bug fixes, the newest Windows preview includes updates to the Start menu, improvements to snapping in tablet mode, and local account support with Cortana.
The default for tile groups on Start is to have 3 columns of medium sized tiles, but we heard feedback from many Insiders who wanted the ability to have a 4th column as well, so they could have two wide or large sized tiles side by side in a group. In this build, you can enable this by going to the Settings app > Personalization > Start and enabling "Show more tiles". And for the Insiders that want more than 512 tiles on Start; we now support up to 2048. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Analyst Slams Amazon's "Confusing" Hardware Strategy
Do you think Prime members are already getting their money's worth with the $99 annual fee, or should it come with additional benefits, such as Amazon hardware discounts?
Macquarie is surprised at how little Amazon ties its $99-a-year membership shopping club, Prime, into its hardware efforts, beyond just making Prime content like streaming music and TV shows or books readily available on its tablets. "We are frustrated that Amazon doesn't give Prime members even more benefits related to hardware (lower prices, early delivery, more exclusive content, etc ), nor does it aggressively drive HW owners to become Prime members (at least not directly)," Schachter writes.

Map Of US States Compares Energy Use With Foreign Countries
This comparison map is pretty interesting to look at. Apparently, California uses as much energy as Mexico does annually, while Texas' consumption is equivalent to Brazil's.
While we are increasingly switching to cleaner forms of energy, the US is still a powerhouse. Surprisingly or not, many individual US states use as much energy as entire countries.

Xbox Boss Expects PS4 Price Drop In US
The PlayStation 4 has received a price cut in Japan, and Phil Spencer seems to think that it'll also happen in the US. For those who are still on the fence about getting a PS4, what price would convince you to get one?
"I fully expect they [PlayStation] will drop price. When I think about the playbook they've used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we'll see a price drop from them coming."

A Conversation With Edward Snowden
Neil deGrasse Tyson's featured guest on StarTalk this week is none other than Edward Snowden. This is more of an informal conversation that involves everything from encryption to communication with aliens.
Neil deGrasse Tyson chats with whistleblower Edward Snowden via robotic telepresence from Moscow. The two card-carrying members of the geek community discuss Isaac Newton, the difference between education and learning, and even how knowledge is created. They also dive into the Periodic Table and chemistry, before moving on to the more expected subjects of data compression, encryption and privacy.

Apple Is About To Launch .Apple
I've got dibs on youreholdingitwrong.apple and ifyouseeastylustheyblewit.apple.
Although fanbois are likely to get very excited over the idea of domain names ending in "apple" (they tend to get excited over literally anything that Apple does), the move may represent something more significant in terms of the broader internet: the first significant public awareness of what are being called in the domain industry "dot-brands."

The Life And Death Of The Creative Computer Virus
Once upon a time, there were viruses that simply annoyed or amused you without wiping your data or leaving your system compromised.
While early computer viruses were certainly capable of destruction and minor havoc, they were often designed simply for the hackers' own amusement and to deliver what's known as a "payload." It might be a message that tells you that cybertron69 has owned you, or it might be an elaborate animation with a political message. Hackers have moved on to using their time in more lucrative ways and just don't get around to putting that cherry on top anymore.

Disney To Re-Release Theatrical Cuts Of The Original Star Wars Trilogy
If recent tweets from Empire are to be believed, Han will shoot first again in theaters. I believe the Despecialized Editions can finally be put to rest if Disney goes as far as to release the originals on Blu-ray.
During the question and answer session, film director/producer John Landis (An American Werewolf in London), revealed to the audience some unexpected and major news regarding Star Wars of all things. Empire is reporting: "At a Q&A tonight John Landis dropped that Disney are finally going to re-release the theatrical cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy." Landis then added, the information was provided to him by his old pal George Lucas.

Microsoft Built Its Own Linux Operating System
While many seem quick to sensationalize this and suggest that hell has frozen over, this is probably just a logical move by Microsoft in adopting the right tool for the job.
Microsoft has indeed released a Linux-based operating system. Don't get too excited about trying it out, though. This isn't some kind of attempt by Microsoft to steal desktop Linux share from the likes of Ubuntu, Mint, and Fedora. It's not an OS that's built for computers. It's "a cross-platform modular operating system for data center networking," and it's made to run in Microsoft's Azure cloud environment. Fittingly enough, it's called Azure Cloud Switch.
