Go To The Dark Side Of Debit With This $28,500 Star Wars Watch
I'm liking the details on this Star Wars watch, but it looks friggin' gigantic—though I guess it ought to be. If I ever spend that much on a watch, I sure as hell want everyone to see it.

Based on the Devon Thread 1 model, the watch has 350 individual parts, 313 electrical contacts, four glass-reinforced nylon belts (used in gauges on the original 747 aircraft) and four microstep motors. The watch also features an on-board microprocessor, multiple high-tech optical recognition cells, lubricant-free ruby bearings and a lithium-polymer cell that recharges wirelessly through an inductive charging tower.

Gaming PCs Are Like Sports Cars, The First Thing You Do Is Show Them Off
That's according to Lenovo—and any other company that has a gaming line, I assume, based on all the fancy lights that gaming peripherals typically have. Lenovo's lineup seems pretty modest in the aesthetics department, though, which I like. But do you actually prefer a lot of bling on your gaming mice and keyboards?

We observed gamers and found that they like to show off their systems to their friends, so we said hey, why don't we come up with a transparent solution. We even painted the clean-cable routing inside. It's like showing somebody a car. When you buy a sports car the first thing you do is open up the hood and show somebody the engine inside. The inside is important, but the outside is just as important. Sure we care about stuff like frames per second and low lag time, but you need a PC's design to look and feel attractive.

Textural Printing Creates Paintings Your Fingertips Can Appreciate
The mantra "look, but don't touch" goes out the window with Canon's textural printing, which creates images that are meant to be touched. How long until Playboy or Hustler uses this for their magazines?

The whole process can be rather lengthy, but when it's complete, you have a printed image with actual physical depth. That means noses and chins that protrude from portraits, and defined muscles on an athlete's thighs, calves and butt that you can stroke (that last part was very popular with Canon Expo attendees).

Physicists Achieve Perfect Acoustic Absorption
Does this mean that we'll get earplugs that can truly block out all sound? I could really use a pair to block out my annoying neighbors.

In a paper published in the Applied Physics Letters this week, the Hong Kong researchers describe a rather more active absorption system (but not totally active) composed of two resonators, both of which are tuned to the same frequency, which is itself "impedance-matched" to the background medium, e.g. the open air or whatever surrounding the acoustic absorber. The result is sound-killing destructive interference.

Top 100 Ashley Madison Passwords Are As Weak As All The Rest
People sure do love basic number sequences, don't they?

The top 10 Ashley Madison passwords are 123456, 12345, password, DEFAULT, 123456789, qwerty, 12345678, abc123, pussy, and 1234567. With the exception of choice number 9, the passwords look like they could have come from just about any site breach published over the past decade.

Incredible Intel Ultra-Thin All-In-One
Intel offers a potential glimpse at future PCs with this super-thin, super-sleek all-in-one from IFA 2015. It is supposedly passively cooled and features an OLED screen. I'll take two. (The video is in Swedish, but it offers a good view of the unit.)

Not much is known about the performance specs of the machine, and while Intel keeps everything under wraps is hard to pin point the exact performance of the machine. However, what impresses us is that Intel managed to place an entire system in a form-factor that resembles a devices slimmer than a painting panel board, while also holding a 4K screen.

Office 2016 Rolls Out On September 22
The newest version of Office will be available at the end of the month and include features such as real-time collaboration and a unified UI. I have a 365 subscription, so I will be upgrading right away—though I don't think I have a choice, as it is reported that Office upgrades and updates will be more aggressive and forced this time around.

You may have heard the rumors, but today I'm happy to confirm that Office 2016 will be broadly available starting on September 22nd. If you have a volume licensing agreement in place, you can download Office 2016 from the Volume Licensing Service Center starting October 1st.

Verizon To Be First To Field Test Crazy-Fast 5G Wireless
It is possible that we see the successor to 4G as early as 2017, courtesy of Verizon. The carrier's findings show that 5G should be 30 to 50 times faster than the current 4G network.

The nation's largest wireless carrier will begin field trials on so-called fifth-generation, or 5G, technology within the next 12 months, Roger Gurnani, chief information and technology architect for Verizon, said in an interview last week. He expects "some level of commercial deployment" to begin by 2017.

Today Is National Video Games Day
Is it weird how there are actually two days in the year that celebrate video games? The first, "Video Games Day," falls on July 8, and the second, "National Video Games Day," occurs on September 12. I already got some Mass Effect 3 out of my system early this morning—what will you be playing today?

New Tool Reduces Smartphone Battery Drain By Suppressing Background Activities
Purdue University has introduced HUSH for improving the battery life of Android smartphones. The tool was designed to address the finding that apps drain nearly 30 percent of battery power while the screen is off.

The key insight behind the proposed solution, HUSH, is that background activities of individual apps are not equally important to individual smartphone users. For example, frequent Facebook updates during screen-off may be useful to a user who checks Facebook feeds and reacts to notifications often, but they are much less useful to another user who rarely checks such updates. The HUSH system dynamically identifies app background activities that are not useful to the user experience on a per-app basis and suppresses such background app activities during screen-off to reduce the battery drain.

Does Junk Food Shrink Your Brain?
Put down those Big Macs and Twinkies; new evidence suggests that junk food shrinks the brain and could increase the risk of mental disorder.

The results of the study, now published in the international journal BMC Medicine, suggest that older adults who eat more unhealthy foods, such as sweet drinks, salty snacks and processed meats, have smaller left hippocampi. It also shows that older adults who eat more nutrient-rich foods, such as vegetables, fruits and fish, have larger left hippocampi. These relationships existed over and above other factors that may explain these associations, such as gender, levels of physical activity, smoking, education or depression itself.

Samsung Launches Industry's First 12Gb LPDDR4 DRAM
Samsung will be mass producing 12-gigabit LPDDR4 mobile DRAM, and they suggest that their upcoming smartphones and tablets may have 6GB of memory.

In next-generation flagship devices, 6GB of LPDDR4 mobile DRAM will allow consumers to enjoy seamless multitasking and maximum performance within the latest operating system (OS) environments. Also, based on the new 12Gb LPDDR4, the 6GB package can easily fit into the same space used for 3GB LPDDR4 packages currently available, therefore meeting the need for greater design compatibility and manufacturing productivity in advanced mobile devices.

Dell Is Also Building Its Own Microsoft Surface Clone
First it was Lenovo, and now Dell looks to be creating its own version of the Surface. This one happens to have a 4K screen.

There'll be a stylus for it, and other specs include a Thunderbolt 3 port, 10-hour battery life, and cameras on both back and front (8-megapixel on the rear, with a 5-megapixel selfie cam). Unfortunately this leak doesn't offer us any specifics about the XPS 12's processor, nor the amount of RAM inside. But with both this and Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 around the corner, it's shaping up to be a pretty great fall for Windows 10.
