IRS says cyberattacks more extensive than previously thought

The
U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said Monday a hacking attack into
one of its computer databases revealed in May was much more extensive
than previously thought, with nearly three times as many taxpayers hit
by data theft. The IRS said in late May the tax return information of
about 114,000 U.S. taxpayers had been illegally accessed by cyber
criminals over the preceding four months, with another 111,000
unsuccessful attempts made. A new review has identified 220,000
additional incidents where data was breached, the tax collection agency
said.

Lockdown lifted at U.S. nuke site after sniffer-dog false alarm
No
explosive residue or device was found on the truck after a search by
law enforcement, the Savannah River Site said in a statement on its
Facebook page. The dog had barked at a truck that services vending
machines, said an official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The
facility, which was put in lockdown for a "potential security event"
following the alarm, purifies highly enriched uranium and is part of the
DoE's nuclear arm.

Planned Parenthood seeks injunction against Florida health agency

Planned
Parenthood sought an emergency legal injunction on Monday against
Florida health officials to block the use of what it says are new and
unpublished standards to define pregnancy gestation periods. The legal
move filed in circuit court in Tallahassee came after Florida Republican
Governor Rick Scott ordered a probe last month of the state's 16
Planned Parenthood locations, resulting in three clinics being cited on
Aug. 5 for illegally performing abortions in the second trimester.
Planned Parenthood said the abortions in question were first-trimester
abortions and that the state appeared to have arbitrarily shortened its
measurement of the first trimester.

NEW

Treacherous terrain hampers rescue efforts for crashed Indonesian plane

By
Hidayat Setiaji and Fergus Jensen JAKARTA (Reuters) - Treacherous
terrain in Indonesia's Papua province on Monday hampered rescuers'
efforts to reach a passenger plane that crashed with 54 aboard, the
latest in a string of aviation disasters in the sprawling Southeast
Asian archipelago. Rescuers have yet to detect the aircraft's black
boxes and news of survivors depends on a ground team now trekking slowly
towards the mountainous area, the rescue official overseeing the search
said. Rescue teams arriving at the site will have to build a helipad to
fly in help, Guru told a news conference in the Indonesian capital,
adding that 266 people were involved in the operation, while 11 aircraft
scoured the thickly forested area.
