Sony says it will 'never ever sell or exit' the mobile industry
With Samsung losing steam, and HTC on the verge of collapse, we could see Sony become the new hero of Android. Sony Mobile President & CEO Hiroki Totoki has said that the company has no plans to sell of its mobile business, nor will it exit the mobile market anytime soon.

sony-never-sell-exit-mobile-industry
Totoki talked with Arabian Business recently, where he said: "Smartphones are completely connected to other devices, also connected to people's lives - deeply. And the opportunity for diversification is huge. We're heading to the IoT (Internet of Things) era and have to produce a number of new categories of products in this world, otherwise we could lose out on a very important business domain". He added: "In that sense we will never ever sell or exit from the current mobile business".

With the news of the Xperia Z5 to come out later this year, we could see Sony really turn around its mobile business and start dominating markets where Samsung is slipping.

Facebook to outfit 50% its data centers with renewable energy by 2018
Facebook hasn't just announced its new Fort Worth, Texas-based data center, but it has also said that it plans to power 50% of its data centers with renewable energy by 2018.

facebook-plans-outfit-datacenters-renewable-energy-2018
The new Fort Worth-based data center is 100% powered by wind energy, but the new plan of 50% of its data centers being green is good to see, especially when we think that the social networking giant wants to see 25% of its data centers powered by renewable energy by the end of the year.

In the end, Facebook wants to see all of its data centers powered by renewable energy, so it has quite the task ahead of them. The company has worked with Citi Energy, Starwood Energy, and Alterra Power in order to deliver a 17,000 acre wind farm online for its new Fort Worth data center, which will see 200MW of energy pumped into Texas.

Samsung profits expected to fall short, even with Galaxy S6 release
Even with the release of two flagship smartphones, Samsung is expecting its operating profits to be down this quarter. The company expected to make $6.3 billion for the three-month period, but will most likely end up wrapping up the quarter with $6.1 billion instead.

samsung-profits-expected-fall-short-even-galaxy-s6-release
This is a 4.2% drop to the same period of 2014, but it represents the seventh straight quarter in a row that Samsung has had profit drops, where it is finding it hard to compete against Apple in the high-end market, and Chinese rival Xiaomi in the low and mid-range markets. The Galaxy S6 was meant to represent a big change for Samsung, and while the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge were received well by reviewers and consumers, it doesn't look like it was enough to pull Samsung's profits up.

Samsung expected the normal Galaxy S6 to sell four-to-one units compared to the S6 edge, but the S6 edge ended up being the most-wanted out of the two, leading Samsung into shortages. Before it could produce more handsets, stock shortages started happening, which led to Samsung losing many more sales than it could've had. Now the company has more S6 units on hand than it wanted, and can't get them out of the door quick enough, leading the company with the possibility of reducing the price on the S6 to boost sales.

Ubisoft learns from Watch Dogs, shows games on 'target machines' at E3
After the mess that was Watch Dogs, where Ubisoft was caught gimping the graphics of the PC version of the game and showing off footage from the game that was clearly not captured on consoles at the time, it changed its policies for E3 2015.

ubisoft-learns-watch-dogs-shows-games-target-machines-e3
The studio has reassessed how it shows off pre-release games, with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot telling The Guardian: "With E3 2015 we said, OK, let's make sure the games are playable, that they're running on the target machines. When we show something, we ask the team, make sure it's playable, make sure gamers can immediately see exactly what it is. That's what we learned from the Watch Dogs experience - if it can't be played on the target machine, it can be a risk".

Guillemot in a way blames the undefined early hardware of next-gen consoles (at the time) for the problems of Watch Dogs, where he added: "It's a real challenge to create those types of games. When they come out, especially the first iterations, they are not perfect on everything. We think we launched a good quality game for a first step in a new brand with a new technology. It's just so complex - seamless multiplayer, connectivity with mobile and tablets, so many things - it was maybe a bit too much for a first iteration".

But as VideoGamer.com said, if all of the demos at E3 2015 were running on target hardware, we should not expect the likes of The Division, For Honor, Rainbow Six: Siege, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate or Ghost Recon: Wildlands to be watered down in any shape, way or form.

CM Storm Sirus-C Professional 2.2 Gaming Headset Review

Introduction

Striving to set itself apart from the other 'gaming' headsets offered on the market, Cooler Master's gaming arm, CM Storm, has provided us with a Sirus-C for review, featuring handy cross-system capabilities and a 2.2 driver setup.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
The 2.2 configuration means there are two drivers in each ear, set to provide what the box claims is a "high fidelity sound" experience coupled with "a great soundstage." As many of us know, there is a myriad of 'gaming' related headsets on the market and it seems CM Storm is vying to make this product a little different in order to entice you their way. Read on to see what we think.

Specifications

Providing a 2.2 sound experience through the use of 44mm + 40mm drivers in each ear cup, this product aims to further improve your gaming experience with the implementation of soft cloth ear cups.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
The included hard-wired 3.5mm audio jack comes paired with a USB connection for power (or PC sound) and provides a 3m leeway for movement through a long cloth braided cable. As for sound specifications, the main 44mm driver features a frequency response of 20 - 20,000 Hz, an impedance of 50 Ohms and a sensitivity @ 1KHz of 118db +/- 3dB finished off with an input power of 100mW or more. The secondary 40mm 'woofer' driver has its own impedance of 32 ohms and a sensitivity of 116 dB +/- 3dB.

Last up is the microphone, brandishing a frequency response of 100 - 10,000 Hz, a signal to noise ratio of 50 dB or more and a sensitivity @ 1kHz of -34dB +/- 3dB set to pick up sound in an omni-directional way. There are also other various connections available which ensure support for an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4.

Pricing & Availability

The Sirus-C sits at a premium price point of $126.19 when priced on Amazon plus postage at the time of writing, seeing it fall into the Kingston HyperX Cloud II category and also fighting against Astro's A40 headset (without MixAmp bundle).

What's in the box?

Featuring all the connections you will need to connect to your Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and 4, PC or Mac, the Sirus-C comes with a surprisingly simple package.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
Besides the cables and connections, there isn't really much else to talk about besides a user manual, a handy connection information leaflet and a warranty information card. This is quite disappointing especially given the premium pricing of the product. When spending over $100, I would expect to see included some handy (yet cost effective) accessories such as a carry pouch at the very least.

Let's dig deeper

The headset seems to be made of cheap plastic to touch, but a little 'structure testing' reports back a sturdy and well-made design. The earcups are soft and cover my whole ears quite well.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
However, after using it for a while, the headset clamps quite tightly on your head. After using a myriad of skull-crushing Tt eSPORTS headsets over the last four years, I have found that after two weeks of use basically every set will ease up on you a little, but it's annoying to say the least.

The cloth earcups are one of the best I've ever used. They aren't felt-like soft like as seen in the Astro A40's as they're a little more rugged, but it's almost like a blanket for my ears. Now, this feels great because it's currently 7 degrees Celsius (44.6 Farenheit) outside my office here in Melbourne, Australia, but I can already feel my ears warming up. This isn't a good sign for our 35-degree plus summers.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
The microphone is the worst part. It mutes when you put it up which is awesome, but it has this annoying white LED which shines bright in the corner of your left eye the whole time it's wound down. I searched for some drivers to turn it off, no dice.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
The control unit looks nice and works well (it includes the ability to turn up and down your chat audio separately), it turns off the LED within a cool shade of red when you mute the microphone, but guess what - the LED next to your face still shines on. You might think I'm complaining about basically nothing, but this LED is certainly visible and annoying even with all my lights turned on in my room.

A Heroes of the Storm analysis

Currently my game of choice, Heroes of the Storm (Heroes), helps test out various different parts of your sound experience. There's some higher pitched sounds like Valla's fancy little self-moving arrow and deeper sounds like Tychus when he man's up in his monolith robotic death-machine firing rockets and cannons alike.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
When playing Tychus and jumping into the shiny machine of death, I was excited for the skull-rattling sounds to come from firing my nuke high into the sky and watching it explode on the feeble LiLi trying to escape me. What came next can only be categorized in the 'disappointment' folder - it was completely washed out and left me wondering what exactly the 40mm 'woofer' drivers were built for. There is the common low-priced headset issue of muddy bass and limited clarity when the going gets tough and this headset seems to face the same struggles.

Don't stop the music

Music is a big part of any gamers' experience these days. Services ranging from iTunes to Spotify keeps us connected to the musical world 24/7 whilst browsing Reddit, playing casual games or relaxing while in matchmaking queues.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
Listening in to Pink Floyd's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' reports back another average experience. Don't get me wrong, this headset will suit those people looking for something to get them by, but the clarity for $120+ doesn't even sniff at things like the Sentey Symph, the CM Storm Ceres 500, or the HyperX Cloud I headset which we have reviewed previously.

Moving on to something a little heavier like 'Ayy Ladies' by Travis porter and Tyga accentuates the muddy bass, providing a similar experience to the original Tt eSPORTS Shock Headset which hits the shelves at less than one third of the price of this product.

What's Hot

The sturdy-term feel: The headset feels well constructed and the ear cushions are soft.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
Easy to clean: Thanks to the shiny plastic exterior, you can keep this baby nice, shiny and smell-free.

Cross-capability: The fact it works with PS3/4, Xbox 360, Apple Mac and Windows PC is a handy experience (as seen with the CM Storm Ceres 500).

What's Not

Jaws of death: The headset is seriously tight on your 'noggin'

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
Very muddy bass: As with most cheap headsets, when the bass drops, it sounds like you've just dove under the bed covers - muddy and muffled.

A shining-bright LED microphone: If you're at a LAN with the lights off expect to be quite frustrated.

Final Thoughts

For a headset that boasts "professional audio" and two drivers per ear, I was initially excited to see the results. Upon testing, I felt like the kid who just had Christmas cancelled and it left me puzzled as to why there were two drives included at all.

cm-storm-sirus-professional-2-gaming-headset-review
To be fair, this headset doesn't sound terrible, but for $125+, you're much better going with the HyperX Cloud I/II , the Tt eSPORTS Shock One 5.1, the Astro A40 without the MixAmp bundle or the CM Storm Ceres 500. Sure, most of these headsets don't support consoles, but they will give you a much better sound experience overall. Lastly is that damn LED, if you're at a LAN with the lights off expect to be quite frustrated.

NVIDIA Doubles Performance for Deep Learning Training
NVIDIA today announced updates to its GPU-accelerated deep learning software that will double deep learning training performance. The new software will empower data scientists and researchers to supercharge their deep learning projects and product development work by creating more accurate neural networks through faster model training and more sophisticated model design.

nvidia-doubles-performance-deep-learning-training
The NVIDIA DIGITS Deep Learning GPU Training System version 2 (DIGITS 2) and NVIDIA CUDA Deep Neural Network library version 3 (cuDNN 3) provide significant performance enhancements and new capabilities. For data scientists, DIGITS 2 now delivers automatic scaling of neural network training across multiple high-performance GPUs. This can double the speed of deep neural network training for image classification compared to a single GPU.

For deep learning researchers, cuDNN 3 features optimized data storage in GPU memory for the training of larger, more sophisticated neural networks. cuDNN 3 also provides higher performance than cuDNN 2, enabling researchers to train neural networks up to two times faster on a single GPU.

The new cuDNN 3 library is expected to be integrated into forthcoming versions of the deep learning frameworks Caffe, Minerva, Theano and Torch, which are widely used to train deep neural networks.

"High-performance GPUs are the foundational technology powering deep learning research and product development at universities and major web-service companies," said Ian Buck, vice president of Accelerated Computing at NVIDIA. "We're working closely with data scientists, framework developers and the deep learning community to apply the most powerful GPU technologies and push the bounds of what's possible."

DIGITS 2 - Up to 2x Faster Training with Automatic Multi-GPU Scaling

DIGITS 2 is the first all-in-one graphical system that guides users through the process of designing, training and validating deep neural networks for image classification.

The new automatic multi-GPU scaling capability in DIGITS 2 maximizes the available GPU resources by automatically distributing the deep learning training workload across all of the GPUs in the system. Using DIGITS 2, NVIDIA engineers trained the well-known AlexNet neural network model more than two times faster on four NVIDIA Maxwell architecture-based GPUs, compared to a single GPU. Initial results from early customers are demonstrating better results.

"Training one of our deep nets for auto-tagging on a single NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN X takes about sixteen days, but using the new automatic multi-GPU scaling on four TITAN X GPUs the training completes in just five days," said Simon Osindero, A.I. architect at Yahoo's Flickr. "This is a major advantage and allows us to see results faster, as well letting us more extensively explore the space of models to achieve higher accuracy."

cuDNN 3 - Train Larger, More Sophisticated Models Faster

cuDNN is a GPU-accelerated library of mathematical routines for deep neural networks that developers integrate into higher-level machine learning frameworks.

cuDNN 3 adds support for 16-bit floating point data storage in GPU memory, doubling the amount of data that can be stored and optimizing memory bandwidth. With this capability, cuDNN 3 enables researchers to train larger and more sophisticated neural networks.

"We believe FP16 GPU storage support in NVIDIA's libraries will enable us to scale our models even further, since it will increase effective memory capacity of our hardware and improve efficiency as we scale training of a single model to many GPUs," said Bryan Catanzaro, senior researcher at Baidu Research. "This will lead to further improvements in the accuracy of our models."

cuDNN 3 also delivers significant performance speedups compared to cuDNN 2 for training neural networks on a single GPU. It enabled NVIDIA engineers to train the AlexNet model two times faster on a single NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN X GPU.

EK Radeon R9 Fury X Water Blocks Now Available
EK Water Blocks, Ljubljana based premium computer liquid cooling gear manufacturer, is excited to launch the true single-slot liquid cooling solution for AMD Radeon reference design R9 FURY X video card. EK-FC R9 Fury X directly cools the GPU, HBM as well as VRM (voltage regulation module) as water flows directly over these critical areas, thus allowing the video card and it's VRM to remain stable under high overclocks.

EK-FC R9 Fury X water block features EK unique central inlet split-flow cooling engine design for best possible cooling performance. Such system also works flawlessly with the reversed water flow without adversely affecting the cooling performance. Moreover, such design offers great hydraulic performance, allowing this product to be used in liquid cooling systems using weaker water pumps. Unlike the original AIO cooling solution that comes with AMD Radeon R9 FURY X and takes up two slots, EK-FC R9 Fury X water block will transform the FURY X into a single-slot video card.

The base is made of electrolytic copper (bare- or nickel-plated, depending on the variant) while the top is made of either acrylic- or POM Acetal material. Plexi variants also feature two pre-drilled slots for 3mm LED diodes. Screw-in brass standoffs are pre-installed and allow for safe, painless installation procedure.

Additionally the EK-FC R9 Fury X has been engineered with FC Terminal connection ports for up to four FURY X on a single ATX form factor motherboard, thus allowing for trouble-free swap out and upgrade without any additional changes to the cooling loop.

These water blocks are made in Slovenia, Europe and are readily available for purchase through EK Webshop and Partner Reseller Network. An aesthetic retention backplate, which also cools the backside of the circuit board, is also available for separate purchase and comes in five different finish variants.
