Xbox One might not get 100% backwards compatibility
At E3 2015 Microsoft delivered a strategic bomb by announcing backward compatibility on the Xbox One, which will allow gamers to play older Xbox 360 games on the console for free. Although the Redmond-based console-maker plans to kick off the feature with a slew of games, the future of backward compatibility will ultimately be left to the discretion of developers and publishers.

xbox-one-100-backwards-compatibility
"So, we'll start with 100 titles this autumn, and we'll be adding titles as time goes by," Microsoft's corporate VP Kudo Tsunoda told the Official Xbox Magazine. "At some point we're going to need to get - obviously - the permission of the owners of the content, the publishers and the developers. So 100% is always a hard thing to achieve in anything."

Microsoft currently plans to support 100 Xbox 360 games by this Fall, and expects to have the feature fully up and running by holiday 2015. The feature is currently its actually testing phase for Xbox One Preview Program members, but the library is quite small and includes games like Perfect Dark: Zero, Banjo Kazooie and Mass Effect (which actually runs pretty good on the Xbox One).

Gamers, meanwhile, have created a list of the most requested backward compatibility games that include such Xbox 360 gems as Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Red Dead: Redemption, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Halo: Reach and Fallout 3.

One of the coolest features of backward compatibility is that your saves follow you to the new console. Players can upload their saved data to the Xbox LIVE Cloud and pick off right where they left off on the Xbox One. But there is somewhat of a downside--you'll have to install the full game onto your console, as well as keep the disc around for authentication purposes.

Microsoft has already curated an impressive list of original Xbox games playable on the Xbox 360, and hopefully the hardware titan will be able to continue this trend with the Xbox One.

LG made a whopping 1.2 cents profit for each phone sold last quarter
LG may have shipped 8.1 million LTE smartphones in the latest quarter, its best results ever by the way, but the profits that the South Korean giant is making per handset isn't so great.

lg-made-whopping-1-2-cents-profit-each-phone-sold-last-quarter
The company saw operating profits of just 1.2 cents per smartphone, but with the G4 only being on sale in the United States for two months, LG's next quarter should hopefully be a little better. Moving to LG's Home Entertainment division, the company said that global demand for LCD TVs was "soft" with revenues dropping 22.7% to $3.59 billion.

Kinematix's TUNE helps runners run smarter, neat little product
Kinematix has been heavily promoting its TUNE, a wearable designed for runners, able to collect all sorts of information - well beyond pace and speed - including each foot's ground-contact time, heel-contact time, and more.

TUNE includes insoles with electronic sensors, able to to sync with small electronic devices that connect to the outside of the shoe. After each run, athletes are able to take a closer look at their technique throughout the workout - and the TUNE app even shows how to properly do exercises.

The insole is extremely thin and should be able to fit into most shoes, and since the insole isn't in direct contact with a person's foot, there should be no need to try and wash it.

There is 14 days left in the Kickstarter campaign, with almost $10,000 raised by 51 backers.

Looking ahead, the company plans to connect TUNE with smartwatches and sport watches, providing especially exciting opportunities using something like Android Wear.

"Until now, only elite runners have had access to the type of data available through TUNE," said Paulo Ferreira dos Santos, CEO of Kinematix. "Now, recreational runners at all levels can monitor their movements during a run, obtain an analysis of the evolution of their running technique, and make use of customized exercise plans designed to help them improve. The TUNE app even shows them how to do the exercises."

We could see PC to Xbox One game streaming in the very near future
Microsoft is working on Xbox One games being streamed to your PC, but now it looks like we might see PC games being streamed to the Xbox One according to the latest interview with Xbox boss Phil Spencer, and The Verge.

see-pc-xbox-one-game-streaming-very-near-future
Spencer said that Microsoft is working on getting PC games streaming to the APU-powered Xbox One, but in order to have that working, the company wants to see proper mouse and keyboard support on the console. Not only that, but the company will have to overcome many other obstacles, such as the consumer having enough horsepower in their PC to render the game and then stream it over the network.

Furthermore, the Xbox One would need some tuning to be able to handle the game coming in over the network and the added overheads that come with it, as well as the mouse and keyboard control scheme in the games. If Microsoft does manage to get PC games streaming to the Xbox One, it will be competing with NVIDIA's GameStream technology which streams your PC games to your compatible Shield devices.

No Man's Sky could come to VR
No Man's Sky is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious and anticipated games in recent memory--its magnificent interstellar sci-fi themes awaken the inner space pirate in all of us, not to mention the cosmic beauty of an infinitesimal procedurally-generated universe made of billions of celestial bodies and planets just waiting to be explored.

And what better way to experience such a galactic adventure than with VR? Hello Games' Sean Murray agrees that No Man's Sky would benefit tremendously from VR support, and has shown a lot of interest in the possibility. "Morpheus, Oculus...There's nothing more cool and sci-fi than VR and a big procedural universe," Murray continued in a recent interview with EDGE magazine. "I think that, for the people who want to just explore, and even for the space combat and things like that, it would be a good fit. Let's put it that way."

Acknowledging the sensitive nature of pre-release juggernauts and the deal with Sony, Murray wasn't able to get into specifics: "I don't know what I'm allowed to say. [VR support] is something we're thinking about."

mans-sky-vr
No Man's Sky was previously believed to be a timed-exclusive for Sony's PlayStation 4, however Murray revealed last month that the game would release simultaneously for PC and PS4. This consistent cross-platform release could afford time to work in VR support for the game.

Since consumer models of both the Oculus Rift and Sony's PS4-ready Project Morpheus are planned for a release in 2016, we might see a Holiday 2015 launch for No Man's Sky with VR support shortly thereafter. So far Hello Games hasn't revealed any concrete launch details for the space sim and it remains TBD.

Man responsible for killing Cecil suffering Yelp business backlash
Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer isn't a popular man these days, after it was reported he's the one responsible for killing Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe.

man-responsible-killing-cecil-suffering-yelp-business-backlash
Not surprisingly, his business, River Bluff Dental, has been absolutely decimated, despite Yelp removing countless reviews.

Motherboard, a Vice-launched business, spoke with Connor Jones, a digital media associate from the Go Fish Digital online reputation and management firm. Based on the large volume of low ratings assigned by random Internet visitors, it looks like Palmer's business would need more than 7,000 five-star reviews - or more than 17,000 four-star reviews - for the River Bluff Dental to receive a 3.5 rating.

"I actually expected it to be higher, in the tens of thousands," Jones told Motherboard. "But it's not like he's ever going to get 7,000 [positive reviews] anyway."

The Internet moves swiftly against people it doesn't like - and Palmer's killing of Cecil the Lion has apparently angered many. Overall, the SEO damage done will be substantial, as searching for "Walter Palmer" or "River Bluff Dental" won't yield any good news for the dentist/avid hunter.

Amazon wants drone-only airspace for its delivery aircraft
In its effort to one day make deliveries using drones, Amazon is quite vocal in helping create drone airspace to get the job done. Amazon hopes to be able to deliver packages within 30 minutes, a noble goal that has some people excited - and others worried about clogged airspace full of drones.

amazon-drone-airspace-delivery-aircraft
Airspace up to 200 feet above the ground would be designed for "low speed localized traffic," meaning video drones and survey and inspection aircraft.

Amazon would like to keep 200-feet of air space - between 200 feet and 400 feet above the ground - for drones in the "high-speed transit" lane designed for "well-equipped vehicles." The airspace 400 feet to 500 feet would be considered a "no fly zone," unless there is an emergency.

"In the United States, there are approximately 85,000 commercial, cargo, military and general aviation flights every day. This number is likely to be dwarfed by low altitude [unmanned drone] operations in the next 10 years," the company said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) just began allowing Amazon to try out its drone delivery system in limited tests - but the popular e-tailer wants to streamline its future ambitions.

Apparently, you can even use Wi-Fi on Mt. Fuji now
Japanese officials have teamed up with telecom company NTT Docomo to install Wi-Fi hotspots at eight different spots on Mt. Fuji.

apparently-even-use-wi-fi-mt-fuji-now
Apparently, tourists and mountain climbers need a bit of Internet access, so they can post social media updates, publish selfies, and keep people informed about their travels. Cottages and buildings located near the summit of Mt. Fuji will also give people the chance to use the Internet and stay connected.

Realistically, this is a great way for Mt. Fuji visitors to receive updated weather and climbing condition reports wherever they are on the mountain. The trial period, which is active now until September, provides up to 72 hours of Internet access to each guest.

"It's great that we can connect to a network here. I run an Internet blog from up here and so I am now able to inform people who are planning to climb Mt. Fuji about the conditions up here and let them know what the weather is like," said Daisuke Koiwai, an avid blogger, in a statement published by Euronews. "It makes me very happy."

ING Netherlands introduces voice-based mobile payments
Members of the ING Netherlands bank can now test a new mobile banking service that allows them to log in and pay using their voice. The unique system, powered by Nuance, went live earlier in the week, and is supported by Apple iOS and Google Android.

ing-netherlands-introduces-voice-based-mobile-payments
The ING Netherlands mobile banking app activated voice-driven payments so customers no longer need to enter a PIN number or password while shopping. The app compares a stored voice recording that is used to verify each time a person says a simple phrase.

Fraudulent voice activations can be saved, and ING Netherlands will be able to help reduce fraud.

Supporters say mouth movement and vocal sounds can be a more distinct way to recognize someone - even more unique than a person's fingerprint. It seems like a clever offering at a time when banks and mobile phone makers want to be prepared for an expected increase in mobile payments.

Nintendo's Wii U finally tops 10 million units sold
Nintendo has finally sold more than 10 million Wii U units, with the sales figure reached during its fiscal quarter that ended last month.

nintendos-wii-finally-tops-10-million-units-sold
During its most recent quarter, the company sold only 470,000 units - a drop from 510,000 units year-over-year.

The Wii U publicly launched across the world in November, and has endured an incredibly slow growth rate - though Nintendo hopes that begins to change with games such as Splatoon.

As the Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 continue to generate most interest among console gamers, Nintendo has struggled to carve out its own position in the competitive market. The company is looking ahead to its codenamed NX next-generation console, which is expected to be revealed in 2016.

NTSB explains what SpaceShipTwo pilot endured during horrific incident
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo pilot Peter Siebold's frightening account of what happened as the test craft broke apart after suffering a "serious anomaly."

ntsb-explains-spaceshiptwo-pilot-endured-during-horrific-incident
Aware that SpaceShipTwo disintegrated, Siebold blacked out as the cool air was extremely difficult to breathe. The next time he woke up, he desperately tried to active the equipped backup oxygen, and his next memory was when his parachute automatically deployed.

Scaled Composites failed to create a system that would have prevented the braking system from being prematurely unlocked, which caused the issue when the other pilot unlocked it, according to the NTSB.

Despite the SpaceShipTwo incident, Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson said he still plans to be a passenger on the first tourist flight. Meanwhile, Virgin plans to test a different craft later this year, as the company has hundreds of people signed up to fly 62 miles above the Earth's surface.

Tablet market continues to struggle and decline in Q2 2015
The worldwide tablet market dropped 7 percent year-over-year during Q2 2015, with shipments racking up 44.7 million units, according to the IDC research group.

tablet-market-continues-struggle-decline-q2-2015
Apple is the No. 1 tablet vendor, with 24.5 percent market share, though saw its year-over-year growth suffer a whopping -17.9 percent. Samsung now has 17 percent market share, but saw its year-over-year growth finish at -12 percent - with both the No. 1 and No. 2 tablet manufacturers suffering greatly.

Lenovo (5.7 percent), Huawei (3.7 percent), and LG Electronics (3.6 percent) rounded out the top five, though each company saw year-over-year growth.

"Longer life cycles, increased competition from other categories such as larger smartphones, combined with the fact that end users can install the latest operating systems on their older tablets has stifled the initial enthusiasm for these devices in the consumer market," said Jitesh Ubrani, senior research analyst at IDC. "But with newer form factors like 2-in-1s, and added productivity-enabling features like those highlighted in iOS9, vendors should be able to bring new vitality to a market that has lost its momentum."

Chinese hackers suspected in recent cyberattack on United Airlines
United Airlines, the No. 2 largest airline company in the world, was apparently attacked by Chinese hackers in May or June.

chinese-hackers-suspected-recent-cyberattack-united-airlines
If true, it looks like hackers could have been able to collect movement data on millions of American travelers. Passengers, flight origins and destinations, and other data was likely taken by the hackers, according to unnamed officials speaking with Bloomberg.

"Speculation that China is responsible for the United Airlines breach is interesting but at this point, irrelevant," said Jason Polanich, founder and chief architect of SurfWatch Labs. " Too many companies have a false sense of security, thinking it won't happen to them. Pair that with the fact that hacking tools are available to virtually everyone today via illicit trade on the Dark Web and in other places and you've got a recipe for disaster.

"I'm sure this is a wake-up call to all airlines. It's been reported the same investigators that worked on the OPM breach helped United Airlines discover this latest breach. Unfortunately, UA was reacting. They weren't proactively pursuing intelligence; they were waiting for someone to tell them where to look. To be most effective, cyber should intersect with physical and operational security and so many companies aren't thinking that way. The value of intelligence is critically missing."

Many of the large-scale attacks originating from China typically have support from the Chinese government, which is seemingly building a large database of stolen information from the United States. Considering the size of UA, military and US government personnel travel itineraries were likely also stolen by those responsible.

Kingston HyperX Cloud Core Gaming Headset Review

Introduction

With the Cloud and Cloud II headsets both receiving stellar reviews (Editor's Choice) from myself in the recent past, HyperX has provided me with the baby brother in this Cloud series - the Cloud Core.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review
Set out to fulfil the needs of entry-level enthusiasts and aimed at a younger audience, this similar-looking Cloud Core headset brandishes a 3.5mm connection with a 2.0 driver design. How does this cheaper model stack up when compared to the rest? Read on to find out.

Specifications

Utilizing 53mm neodymium drivers to provide a 2.0 sound experience, the HyperX Cloud Core features a leatherette headband, memory foam leatherette ear pads, closed ear cups, an aluminum frame and a detachable microphone.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review
Connected to your device through a single 3-ringed 3.5mm jack or through the provided 2m long extension which offers dual 3.5mm jacks for sound and microphone, this headset is devoid of the USB and 7.1 virtual surround experience that the Cloud II offers. The drivers in the Cloud Core offer a frequency response of 15Hz - 25 KHz, an impedance of 60 Ohms and a maximum output power of 150mW. This information alone shows that we're looking at around a 50mW output higher and almost-double the Ohms on offer than competing headsets, once again accentuating the HyperX quality I have experienced in the past.

Without forgetting the microphone, this detachable component brandishes a frequency response of 100 Hz - 12 KHz, a sensitivity @ 1kHz of -39dB +/- 3dB and is set to pick up sound in a cardioid pattern with an impedance of < 2.2 KOhms. This microphone will work through your tablet, PlayStation 4, Mac or tablet by utilizing the 3-ringed design. You will need to plug in the extension cable for dual 2-ring 3.5mm connections for PC and utilize an adapter (not included) for Xbox One compatibility.

Pricing & Availability

Being released to market soon, the HyperX Cloud Core will set you back $69.99 MRSP in the United States. This price-point puts it at the entry to mid-level range, competing with headsets like the Tt eSPORTS Shock (original) and more. If the sound on offer is anything decent, you can be sure that this headset will come out a winner in this review.

What's in the box?

Providing the 2m extension cable which sees a single 3.5mm jack turn into two 3.5mm plugs, one for audio and one for microphone, Kingston has also included a detachable microphone with rubber plug. This little plug fills the hole when your 3.5mm-connected microphone is taken away.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review
Coming with the same issue as with many other headsets, there's no carry pouch or case in sight. Once again nothing massive, but with Kingston being a massive promoter of eSports, LANs and competitive gaming, one would assume that a carry pouch would be included in order to keep your precious product safe and free of marks or scratches. The rubber grommet is also extremely easy to lose, with no pouch to store it in or way to have it hang from the headset itself.

Let's dig deeper

As seen with the other Cloud models, the comfort and build quality of this model is great. It's not quite on the comfort level of an expensive pair of Sennheiser headphones or the more expensive Cloud II, but it's similar to the original HyperX Cloud and much better than many headsets in its price range.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review
The ear cups are soft and the aluminium base cannot be promoted enough. It provides longevity and removes the common issue of brittle plastic headbands that many other headsets experience. The overall size is a little smaller than the Cloud II and this is noticeable on my head (larger in size) and makes my ears feel a little hotter, combined with slightly less comfort. Given this, I'm really just nit-picking as the comfort is much better than most other headsets around this price range and there's nothing to worry about realistically.

There's no LEDs or flashy exterior options, which suits some but not others; this is completely up to personal choice. I also prefer the Cloud II microphone in the way that the foam on the end is round and not elongated, I find this design doesn't distract me as much as the round Cloud Core microphone does, but once again, this is a small issue. The cord is plenty long enough and feels like it will last quite some time. The last few months of using my Cloud II has reported no issues and the Cloud Core cable is made of the same material.

A Dota2 analysis

I've decided on jump back on the Valve train in preparation for The International 5. Dota2 can easily allow you to experience a full range of sounds - ranging from Tidehunter's bass-laden ultimate (Ravage) to Sniper and his annoying tinny 'Shrapnel' ability.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review
The result was something to be expected - it's great. Likening to the Cloud in comparison, it seems that Kingston has released the Cloud Core in order to help fill out a complete range of differently priced headsets. Even through the Cloud Core has a slightly different name to the two other models, it helps explain that (in order), those on a budget should be looking at the Cloud Core or slightly more expensive Cloud, with those looking for some extra performance should be looking into the Cloud II.

Don't stop the music

Music is a big part of any gamers' experience these days. Services ranging from iTunes to Spotify keeps us connected to the musical world 24/7 whilst browsing Reddit, playing casual games or relaxing while in matchmaking queues.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review
Listening in to Pink Floyd's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' reports back a good experience. When compared to the Cloud II, this headset lacks the rumbling bass and the clarity isn't quite as crisp, but parts of it are certainly present. I've tested virtual 5.1 and 7.1 headsets at over $140 that have sounded much worse than this. Don't get me wrong, the Cloud Core won't blow away any audiophile, but someone looking at a sub-$100 headset for gaming and general PC use should be as impressed as I am.

Moving on to something a little heavier like 'Ayy Ladies' by Travis porter and Tyga shows off the lack of punchy bass, but at there is still some present. Turning it up to full volume shows the quality that these drivers portray, ensuring that no loss of quality in sound is experienced. Cheaper headsets will literally hurt you with its lower quality when pumped up to 100%, showing a major degrade in already-average sound, the Cloud Core does not have this issue.

What's Hot

The sturdy feel: The aluminum base is an amazing addition in order to keep your headset lasting for a long time.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review
Easy to clean: The leather and aluminium allow for an easy cleaning regime keeping your headset fresh and clean.

Comfort in the long run: The earcups are soft and the headband feels great. Those with larger heads will experience issues after 90 minutes of gameplay. If you're worried you should be spending the extra on a slightly bigger Cloud II.

Sound quality versus price: One word - amazing. Much better than many $120+ headsets I have tested, the Cloud Core provides sound quality that doesn't degrade when the volume is turned up, fairly clear sounds and a nibble of bass punch. There's nothing more you can ask for a headset of this price.

What's Not

Lack of accessories: It would be great to see Kingston include a carry pouch and a sticker for the fans. It's inexpensive and wins some easy brownie points.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review

Final Thoughts

The headset looks clean, its design is simple, the build quality is amazingly sturdy, and the sound quality for the price is unbeatable. If you're looking for a cheap and comfortable headset there is nothing better I could recommend at this time. However, if you're looking for absolute sound quality, remember that this is a gaming headset and you should be looking at other brands.

kingston-hyperx-cloud-core-gaming-headset-review
Those with larger heads (like me) may experience some comfort issues around the 90 minute mark of use, if so you need to, look into larger headsets as it seems this model is literally just a smaller Cloud II. Kingston has created another winner with the Cloud Core. It's cheap, comfortable and extremely sturdy, while providing the best sub-$100 sound quality I have heard to date. It's also worth noting that Xbox compatibility comes around through an adapter, as explained in the user manual.

Intel and Micron Produce Breakthrough Memory Technology
Intel Corporation and Micron Technology, Inc. today unveiled 3D XPoint technology, a non-volatile memory that has the potential to revolutionize any device, application or service that benefits from fast access to large sets of data. Now in production, 3D XPoint technology is a major breakthrough in memory process technology and the first new memory category since the introduction of NAND flash in 1989.

intel-micron-produce-breakthrough-memory-technology
The explosion of connected devices and digital services is generating massive amounts of new data. To make this data useful, it must be stored and analyzed very quickly, creating challenges for service providers and system builders who must balance cost, power and performance trade-offs when they design memory and storage solutions. 3D XPoint technology combines the performance, density, power, non-volatility and cost advantages of all available memory technologies on the market today. The technology is up to 1,000 times faster and has up to 1,000 times greater endurance3 than NAND, and is 10 times denser than conventional memory.

"For decades, the industry has searched for ways to reduce the lag time between the processor and data to allow much faster analysis," said Rob Crooke, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group. "This new class of non-volatile memory achieves this goal and brings game-changing performance to memory and storage solutions."

"One of the most significant hurdles in modern computing is the time it takes the processor to reach data on long-term storage," said Mark Adams, president of Micron. "This new class of non-volatile memory is a revolutionary technology that allows for quick access to enormous data sets and enables entirely new applications."

intel-micron-produce-breakthrough-memory-technology
As the digital world quickly grows - from 4.4 zettabytes of digital data created in 2013 to an expected 44 zettabytes by 2020 - 3D XPoint technology can turn this immense amount of data into valuable information in nanoseconds. For example, retailers may use 3D XPoint technology to more quickly identify fraud detection patterns in financial transactions; healthcare researchers could process and analyze larger data sets in real time, accelerating complex tasks such as genetic analysis and disease tracking.

The performance benefits of 3D XPoint technology could also enhance the PC experience, allowing consumers to enjoy faster interactive social media and collaboration as well as more immersive gaming experiences. The non-volatile nature of the technology also makes it a great choice for a variety of low-latency storage applications since data is not erased when the device is powered off.

New Recipe, Architecture for Breakthrough Memory Technology

Following more than a decade of research and development, 3D XPoint technology was built from the ground up to address the need for non-volatile, high-performance, high-endurance and high-capacity storage and memory at an affordable cost. It ushers in a new class of non-volatile memory that significantly reduces latencies, allowing much more data to be stored close to the processor and accessed at speeds previously impossible for non-volatile storage.

intel-micron-produce-breakthrough-memory-technology
The innovative, transistor-less cross point architecture creates a three-dimensional checkerboard where memory cells sit at the intersection of word lines and bit lines, allowing the cells to be addressed individually. As a result, data can be written and read in small sizes, leading to faster and more efficient read/write processes.

3D XPoint technology will sample later this year with select customers, and Intel and Micron are developing individual products based on the technology.

LG ANNOUNCES SECOND-QUARTER 2015 FINANCIAL RESULTS
LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced a modest net profit of KRW 226.4 billion (USD 206.38 million) for the second quarter of 2015, in an extremely challenging environment.

In light of a sluggish global TV market and intense competitive pressures, overall second-quarter sales declined 7.6 percent from the same period last year to KRW 13.93 trillion (USD 12.69 billion). Although revenues remained at virtually the same level as the previous quarter, operating profits declined slightly to KRW 244.1 billion (USD 222.52 million). While the second quarter was more challenging than expected, LG is confident it can recover lost ground in the third quarter with new competitive products and more effective marketing initiatives.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported quarterly revenue of KRW 3.93 trillion (USD 3.59 billion) due to the weak global market for LCD TVs, most notably in the CIS, Latin America and Europe. Second-quarter operating margin declined from the previous quarter largely due to soft global demand and negative currency effects. The company expects the overall market to improve in future quarters primarily in the premium 4K Ultra HD segment, while it expands its OLED line with newer designs at more attractive price points.

The LG Mobile Communications Company reported sales of KRW 3.65 trillion (USD 3.33 billion) in the second quarter, a slight increase of 1 percent from the same period last year. While LG's global smartphone shipments of 14.1 million units reflected a modest 3 percent decline from the same period last year, North America revenues increased by 36 percent year-over-year due to better performance of mid-range smartphones and tablets. Although overall profitably was affected by weaker demand in the premium segment in the domestic Korean market, LG sold more than 8.1 million LTE smartphones worldwide in the quarter, its highest ever. In the third quarter and beyond, LG will more aggressively implement its dual strategy focusing on both premium devices as well as mid-range smartphones targeting emerging markets.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company reported sales of KRW 4.49 trillion (USD 4.09 billion), an increase of 10 percent from the previous quarter. Second-quarter operating profit of KRW 291.8 billion (USD 266 million) increased by 6 percent year-over-year as a result of better product offerings and improved cost structure. As macroeconomic conditions are not expected to improve in the near future, LG will step-up its focus on improving profitability in large part by introducing new air conditioning and home appliance products in North America and other developed markets.

The LG Vehicle Components Company recorded revenues of KRW 450.8 billion (USD 410.94 million) in the second quarter, an 18 percent increase from the previous quarter, mainly from its car infotainment and automotive component engineering business. Despite a modest operating loss of KRW 1.5 billion (USD 1.37 million), LG is accelerating its investment in R&D to further strengthen its position in new automotive technologies as the market for electric cars and electronic components continues to grow.
