AMD addresses the noisy pump whine on its Radeon R9 Fury X
We noticed the annoying pump noise on both of our AMD Radeon R9 Fury X samples, but with cards going to consumers with this noise, it's not good. What is good however, is that AMD is finally addressing the issue, shipping cards with 'sound baffling adhesive' that will make the card quieter.

"While not loud" is quite the statement, as it is incredibly annoying. The question is, how did any of these cards make it out of AMD like this? Did they not test the cards at all, and just send them out? The pump noise is very apparent, to anyone sitting near the Fury X when its under load. AMD continued: "AMD Radeon R9 Fury X customers demand and deserve the best, so adjustments in the sound baffling adhesive compound were applied in the assembly of the high speed cooling pump to address the specific sound a few end users experienced as problematic. This improved the acoustic profile of the pump, and repeat testing shows the specific pitch/sound in question was largely reduced through adjustments to the sound-baffling adhesive compound in the pump".
AMD added: "AMD will work with its video card partners to ensure the satisfaction of the small number of initial customers who observed this specific sound and experienced it as bothersome. AMD is confident that on-going production of Radeon R9 Fury X product reduces the specific sound in question, but this is also a highly subjective matter with wide differences in PC case builds and room acoustics. The AMD Radeon R9 Fury X radiator fan is near silent, and this makes any sound from the high-speed pump more noticeable to some end users, especially during open bench testing. Thus although the overall sound levels are remarkably low for an enthusiast product, AMD has worked to reduce the specific sound that some customers report as bothersome".

Microsoft's latest HoloLens video shows the real field of view
HoloLens is one of the most exciting thing to come out of Microsoft in years, and while the company is laying off 7,800 people, it is still forging on with the release of Windows 10 on July 29, and its first wearable: HoloLens.
Microsoft has said that the limited field of view is there so that HoloLens wearers can continue to do things in real life, without the hologram obstructing their view. I'm sure it will get better as time goes on, with future iterations of HoloLens, but this is definitely going to take some of the steam out of some users' dreams.

Gamer drugged his girlfriend so he didn't have to stop playing games
What do you do when your girlfriend is coming home from work and you don't want to stop gaming? You slip something into her tea, knocking her out, so you don't need to stop gaming - right?

She told the court that her then boyfriend had admitted what he had done to her, which caused her to break up with him. The judge on the case fined the man $746, and said: "Your girlfriend slept long and deeply, which didn't harm her, but this is certainly a premeditated bodily harm". The boyfriend admitted that his act "was stupid" and that he was now "on a straight path" towards an apprenticeship.

ICY DOCK ICYCube MB561U3S-4S Four Bay USB 3.0 Storage Enclosure Review

The ICYCube MB561U3S is a USB 3.0 and eSATA storage solution that features four bays of connectivity. Each of these bays supports either 2.5" or 3.5" drives either of the spinning platter or solid-state type. Aimed at media professionals and others who want a high quality storage solution, the ICYCube supports JBOD function over USB 3.0, while those with a capable port multiplying eSATA RAID controller card will be able to configure this solution as needed. The back of this enclosure houses a 80mm detachable cooling fan, while the drive trays use the latest EZ-Tray design from Icy Dock.
MSRP of the ICY DOCK ICYCube USB 3.0 / eSATA enclosure comes in at $189.99 with a three-year warranty.

With the vast amount of enclosures on the market, each vendor has to attempt to differentiate itself from the pack. With the ICYCube, we found that ICY DOCK did this by allowing both USB 3.0 and eSATA to co-exist on the enclosure, while keeping with its traditional metal chassis. The metal shell of the ICYCube adds build quality along with durability to the package, while the latest EZTray design adds functionality and aesthetic appeal to the unit with their piano black exterior. While the trays don't allow for putting your drives behind lock and key, they do latch quite snuggly and when opening the large aluminium arm of the tray allows the drives to slide out effortlessly.
Performance of the enclosure was quite good, and in fact perfect for use with solid-state media. While typical users will most likely go with standard hard drives to get more capacity out of the unit, it is reassuring to know performance is their should you ever need it. In our testing, we were able to ramp up the ICYCube to 432 MB/s read and 424 MB/s write.
Overall, I am happy to report that all is good with the ICYCube. It carries plenty of performance; build quality and aesthetic appeal for any user to set it on their desk, but the asking price is pretty high.

AMD Announces FirePro S9170 32GB GPU Compute Card
AMD today announced the new AMD FirePro S9170 server GPU, the world's first and fastest 32GB single-GPU server card for DGEMM heavy double-precision workloads, with support for OpenCL 2.0. Based on the second-generation AMD Graphics Core Next (GCN) GPU architecture, this new addition to the AMD FirePro server GPU family is capable of delivering up to 5.24 TFLOPS of peak single precision compute performance while enabling full throughput double precision performance, providing up to 2.62 TFLOPS of peak double precision performance. Designed with compute-intensive workflows in mind, the AMD FirePro S9170 server GPU is ideal for data center managers who oversee clusters within academic or government bodies, oil and gas industries, or deep neural network compute cluster development.

"There are some HPC workloads which require as much data as possible to stay resident on the device, and so the 32GB of memory provided by AMD FirePro S9170, the largest available on a single GPU, will enable the acceleration of scientific calculations that were previously impossible," said Simon McIntosh-Smith, head of the Microelectronics Research Group at the University of Bristol. "For example, our new OpenCL version of the SNAP transport code from Los Alamos National Laboratory needs to keep as much data resident on the device as possible, and so the 32GB of memory will let us run problems of a much more interesting size faster than ever before. The large memory, combined with the 320GB/s memory bandwidth and double precision floating point performance, will make the AMD FirePro S9170 server GPU a 'killer' solution device for many HPC applications."
The AMD FirePro S9170 offers unparalleled GPU compute performance and power efficiency with the following benefits:
- With up to 2.62 TFLOPS of peak double precision performance, the AMD FirePro S9170 is the fastest single-GPU server card available for DGEMM heavy workloads, delivering up to 40% more performance than the competitive solution;
- Support for 40% better double precision performance, while using 10% less power than the competition;
- The AMD FirePro S9170 is the industry's first server GPU with 32GB ultra-fast GDDR5 on-board memory and features a 512-bit memory interface for 320 GB/s of memory bandwidth;
- Equipped with 32GB of GDDR5 memory, the AMD FirePro S9170 GPU can accelerate memory-intensive applications and process larger and more computationally complex workloads with ease; and
- The AMD FirePro S9170 GPU features 33% more memory than the competitive GPU, helping to improve overall workload speed and system responsiveness, especially when working with large amounts of data.
"By combining the new AMD FirePro S9170 server GPU with our G250 Series of 2U eight GPU systems, we are able to deliver HPC servers with up to 256GB of GPU memory," said Alex Liu, product marketing executive of the GIGABYTE Network & Comm. Division. "This unprecedented density of GDDR5 memory will help our customers offer very attractive machines to industries processing large datasets."
"ASUS is pleased to see the AMD FirePro S9170 server GPU complement the AMD FirePro S9150 server GPU, the November 2014 Green500 List-winning solution," said Robert Chin, General Manager, ASUS Server Business Unit. "We are seeing customers not only obtain significant results in the HPC arena, but also achieve power efficiency for more green environments. The arrival of the AMD FirePro S9170 server GPU sets a new milestone for the HPC market segment. As a top Green500 List provider and one of the greenest HPC building block providers, we're excited to see the AMD FirePro S9170 GPU featured in our top ASUS ESC product family to enable excellent performance matched with significant savings in total cost of ownership."
"We have been developing a fully-parallel computational tool based on the AMD GPU heterogeneous computing platform and OpenCL," said Omid Mahahadi, co-founder and director, Geomechanica Inc. "This tool accurately captures the complex physics of massive mines plus oil and gas fields rapidly and reliably. Thanks to the impressive 32GB of memory of the new cards, we expect to run computations on massive data structures containing tens of millions of data elements. The combination of rapid double-precision operations with the large memory capacity enables accurate, detailed, and reliable computations. A similar performance using CPUs would likely require much higher capital and maintenance costs. Moving forward, we plan to take advantage of the recent features of the OpenCL 2.0 open API to further enhance the performance of our software."
To address future needs for HPC development, AMD FirePro S9170 server GPU supports the latest version of OpenCL while ready for the OpenMP and OpenACC developer tools with planned availability in Q3 2015.

Team17 announce The Escapists The Walking Dead
Team17 have today unveiled that they are developing and publishing The Escapists The Walking Dead, a new game in collaboration with Skybound Entertainment.

In this unique game, recreated entirely in the charming 8-bit pixel art style of The Escapists, Rick is in charge of a band of survivors featuring many of the original comic book cast. He must secure the safety of the group by seeking out a safe escape route from each area, and manage several dangerous tasks to keep as many of the group alive as possible. The game faithfully matches the timeline of the comics and so as the player makes progress in the game they play through locations that mirror the progress of the band of the survivors taken from the award-winning comic's epic story.
Daniel Murray, President at Skybound Entertainment said, "Team17 presented a creative plan to blend The Walking Dead into The Escapists and our response was simple. When do we get started? The Escapists is a charming example of a single creator's vision come to life. We are excited to offer fans of The Walking Dead something different and The Escapists The Walking Dead is just that. A playful interpretation that we believe fans of great games in general will love."
Debbie Bestwick, Team17's Managing Director added, "With well over 600,000 units sold, the award-winning The Escapists is one of the hit indie titles of 2015. Masterminding your escape from prison is hard enough but how can we make it harder? Zombies. Remember poor Rick Grimes trying to escape hospital, organise life at a farm or hold up in an abandoned prison? A little bit of awesome 8-bit pixel love later and BOOM! It is great to partner with Skybound and The Walking Dead and we are really excited to 'escapify' the amazing, rich and sinister world of Robert Kirkman."
Team17 will be globally debuting the game at the Walker Stalker Fan Fest in Petco Park, San Diego, California during the 10th and 11th July.
Attendees, roamers and fans will be able to get exclusive first hands-on playable with Rick Grimes in the Harrison Memorial Hospital level.
The Escapists The Walking Dead is scheduled for a 2015 release on Xbox One and PC.
