Some argue we're starting debate on lethal robots too late
Earlier in the year, the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) met to discuss the use of lethal and potentially autonomous robots on the battlefield. Researchers are careful not to urge for a worldwide ban of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS), though urge caution - and much more research - that must be conducted by multiple nations.

argue-starting-debate-lethal-robots-late
The argument of maintaining human control over robotics systems on the battlefield is for moral and legal reasons that robots likely couldn't perceive. However, some wonder if the argument has started too late, as there is increased research in non-human solutions conducting military operations.

"Almost all states who are party to the CCW agree with the need for 'meaningful human control' over the targeting and engagement decisions made by weapons," said Stuart Russell, professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, in a statement published by Nature. "Unfortunately, the meaning of 'meaningful' is still to be determined."

There is current concern that robots used in emergency situations posing the threat of lethal use, and there should be regulation of robots able to pose a military threat.

Netflix gobbles up 36.5% traffic during peak hours in North America
I guess it should be no surprise to anyone that online video consumption continues to take over the Internet, gobbling up even more Internet traffic. It looks like Netflix remains dominant, racking up almost 37 percent of downstream traffic, with HBO Go and HBO Now also accounting for 4.1 percent of traffic on a US fixed network.

netflix-gobbles-up-36-5-traffic-during-peak-hours-north-america
"Netflix continues to slowly increase its domination of North American fixed networks, accounting for 36.5% of downstream traffic in the peak evening hours," according to the Sandvine Global Internet Phenomena Report.

Meanwhile, BitTorrent traffic captured 6.3 percent of North American broadband network traffic, though is reportedly slowing. Sandvine collects information generated by traffic that passes through its networks, and has been applauded for increasing accuracy.

Streaming video, in addition to other streaming content, has had a major impact on the Internet. Services such as Netflix, Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, BitTorrent, and other popular services have increased pressure on traditional subscription-based packages.

Researchers teaching robots to play a role in even more industries
Researchers are creating robotic technology that can help faster automate food processing, using technology that could have major long-term ramifications. Working with the FTNON food-processing equipment manufacturer, new technology could be used in chillers to help process lettuce, cabbage, and other vegetables prior to packaging.

researchers-teaching-robots-play-role-even-more-industries
"In industry, only humans can do that at the moment," confirmed van der Linde, co-founder and CEO of Lacquey, in a statement published by the MIT Technology Review.

One robot can successfully manipulate a chicken, able to slice shoulder tendons before breasts and wings are cut in a processing plant. The new automated system can match the same speed as humans, and developers want to see the speed increase. Also inside of a food processing facility, the Baxter robot from Rethink Robotics are tasked with putting chicken carcasses onto a holder before they are shipped elsewhere in the plant.

Although this technology looks appealing, there is greater concern of robots taking human jobs - and half of human jobs could be at risk. There are no easy answers when it comes to robotics in the workforce, however, companies look forward to increased uptime and automated processes being put in place.

Jay-Z still struggling to make Tidal into streaming music giant
Rap industry icon Jay-Z has had many success stories throughout his career, but his multi-million-dollar decision to purchase Tidal still needs a lot of work.

jay-still-struggling-make-tidal-streaming-music-giant
"We're gathered... with one voice, in unity, in the hopes that today will be another one of those moments in time, a moment that will forever change the course of music history," artist Alicia Keys said during the Tidal press conference earlier in the year. While the record industry struggles in trying to generate revenue from streaming services, it looks like Tidal is struggling even more.

In a changing landscape that is dominated by Spotify and Pandora, it looks like music listeners don't have many reasons to bother giving Tidal a shot. Despite Jay-Z previously saying the service is "just fine," it remains to be seen how he will help win over music listeners.

Instead of focusing on music listeners, consumers and some musicians are less than impressed by the service: "They totally blew it by bringing out a bunch of millionaires and billionaires and propping them up onstage and then having them all complain about not being paid," said Ben Gibbard, front man of Death Cab for Cutie.

Ford wants to support wearables, mobile tech in its vehicles
Ford CEO Mark Fields recently spoke regarding his desire to see the automaker support wearables, smartphones, and other connected tech in vehicles. Embracing technology helped the once-struggling automaker turn around a few years ago, and Ford wants to make sure it doesn't shy away from emerging technologies.

ford-support-wearables-mobile-tech-vehicles
During a recent visit to Ford's new Palo Alto research center, Fields mentioned the "intersection between cars and wearables" that only seems to be accelerating:

" Yeah. Absolutely," Fields said during a recent interview with the San Jose Mercury News. "A lot of the research that we're doing down here is working with companies on wearables and sensors and things of that nature and what would that mean for cars. And is there is an experience on that that makes sense to integrate into our cars?"

Current vehicles feature increased support for smartphones and other consumer technology - and that transition is expected to accelerate in the future.

NVIDIA says that the Shield family is just as important as GeForce
Computex 2015 - NVIDIA had lots to say about the GeForce and Shield product families here in Taipei, but one quote from company CEO Jen-Hsun Huang had my interest piqued.

nvidia-shield-family-important-geforce
Jen-Hsun was asked about the possible numbers on Shield sales, where he replied that the Shield family is just as important as GeForce, and expects the sales to be just as big in the future. Jen-Hsun said he hopes to see: "tens of, if not hundreds of million of sales" when it comes to the Shield product line.

With the new 4K-capable Shield here, an Android TV console, and the Shield Tablet and I'm sure we'll eventually even see Shield VR, NVIDIA is onto a big winner with its Shield line.

NVIDIA: Pascal will be our first 16nm GPU, to be revealed in 2016
Computex 2015 - NVIDIA hosted a round table at the Grand Hyatt here in Taipei with a select handful of press from around the world, where company CEO Jen-Hsun Huang was talking about various products from NVIDIA, such as the GeForce GTX 980 Ti that was just launched.

nvidia-pascal-first-16nm-gpu-revealed-2016
Not only that, but Jen-Hsun talked about the new Shield Android TV which is 4K capable, as well as Drive PX. When the press was asked if they had any questions, we asked if Pascal would be the first GPU architecture to be baked onto the 16nm process, or if we would see Maxwell made on 16nm. Jen-Hsun took a few seconds to answer, but he did say that Pascal will be the first architecture on 16nm.

With the GeForce GTX 980 Ti only just launching, we like to know when the next-gen of everything will be out, so we should see the GeForce GTX 1080, or something completely new in terms of branding, to be unveiled in Q3 2016 (or so).

Taipei Computer Association expects connected tech at Computex
Computex 2015: Connected technology designed to support the Internet of Things (IoT) will receive a large amount of attention during Computex 2015, organizers in Taipei believe. Even though it has taken a few years for manufacturers to work out the kinks, many of the 1,700+ exhibitors in Taiwan should have smart tech products available to visitors.

taipei-computer-association-expects-connected-tech-computex
"Smart living and wearable technology remain the focus, but visitors will find more mature products," said David Liu, from the Taipei Computer Association, in a statement to AFP.

IoT products have been demonstrated at past Computex shows, along with CES and CeBit, but this year has seen a flood of better established offerings.

"Many of the exhibitors demonstrated their smart home devices last year, like plugs, lights or locks, but those devices did not work as systems. The latest products use an app and infrared sensors to come up with a total solution. So in the case of home security, say, users can now automatically receive images of any intruders into their home."

In addition to IoT, expect wearables, 3D, and mobile technology also to have a major presence during Computex 2015 - as companies from around the world converge in Taipei.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Reference Video Card Review

Introduction

This is the video card you've been waiting for: the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti. I have a few friends who have been waiting to upgrade their GeForce GTX 780 Ti video cards, who skipped the GTX 980 when it came out, salivated over the Titan X when it was released, but ultimately waited for the GTX 980 Ti.

nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti-reference-video-card-review
We are weeks away from being introduced to AMD's next-gen Radeon R9 390X, the world's first video card to use the truly next-gen High Bandwidth Memory, or HBM. The Fiji XT-based card is sure to heat things up for the video card market, but is the GeForce GTX 980 Ti NVIDIA's answer to the R9 390X? Only time will tell.

At the time of the review, I have 72 hours before I get on a plane for Taipei for Computex, where all rumors have pointed to AMD teasing its Radeon R9 390X. Other rumors have AMD pegged for E3 2015 which is the week after, but NVIDIA is pulling the trigger on the GM200-powered GTX 980 Ti now, and for good reason: it kicks ass, big time.

I think one of the biggest things that the GTX 980 Ti has for it, outside of its performance, is that NVIDIA is allowing add-in board partners to use aftermarket coolers. The Titan X only arrived in the reference cooler with a handful of waterblocks made for it by various companies.

Everything changes with the GTX 980 Ti, as NVIDIA is allowing for aftermarket coolers which is going to really change things when it comes to offering consumers a bevy of options with the GM200-powered GTX 980 Ti. I'm positively buzzed with excitement to see what the likes of ASUS, MSI, EVGA, ZOTAC and all of the other AIBs can offer.

Quick Specs

One of the key differences between the GeForce GTX 980 and GeForce GTX 980 Ti is that the GTX 980 Ti is based off the GM200 core, the same GPU that powers the Titan X. The GTX 980 on the other hand is powered by the GM204, which is a cut down version of the GM200 core.

Thanks to NVIDIA using the GM200 core, we're effectively receiving a cut down Titan X with half of the framebuffer, with 6GB of GDDR5 instead of the 12GB of GDDR5 found on the Titan X. 12GB of VRAM is completely overkill for 99.9% of gamers at this point in time, which is where the GTX 980 Ti steps in.

Availability & Price

NVIDIA is pricing the GeForce GTX 980 Ti at $649, which is quite competitive as there's no real competition from AMD just yet. The nearly two-year-old Radeon R9 290X is expected to be replaced by the Radeon R9 390X, but with rumors of an MSRP of $849, NVIDIA could have a real star on its hands.

The company has pushed down the price of its GTX 980, too, down to $499. This means you're paying a $150 premium for the 980 Ti, but with the Titan X still at $999 - you're going to want to read on to find out why you will be so tempted to grab the GTX 980 Ti.

Available for free in the Apple App store, Bountye is a mobile marketplace for people to buy and sell anything, but also experience deeper and more meaningful interactions with each other during the process. Bountye connects users with people in their neighbourhoods, or who share their interest via a simple, compelling and beautiful interface.

Millions of users are already using Facebook Buy Sell Swap Groups, and other niche players to buy and sell pre-owned or speciality goods however existing platforms are clunky, don't leverage technology, don't consolidate social commerce, payments, or facilitate the goods exchange in a convenient way.

Bountye changes the way we buy and sell second hand goods with an easy-to-use mobile-based, group-oriented marketplace that seamlessly integrates with leading social platforms.

Set up by former eBay Director, Asim Brown, Bountye brings back the personal touch experienced through consumer-to-consumer (C2C) or peer-to-peer selling.

"Commerce has always been at the heart of communities but it was only the medium with which we exchanged goods that continues to evolve. I felt that one of the key drivers to peer-to-peer selling was the connections we make. This was in direct contrast to anonymity that prevails in the B2C world. Bountye brings back the personal touch, while helping people find unique items. It also helps people declutter and make money from their unused goods at home."
