Amazon Upgrades Kindle Paperwhite
Amazon has announced an updated version of the Kindle Paperwhite e-reader, maintaining a $119 price tag while introducing multiple improvements and new features. The pixel density of the screen has been increased from 212 pixels per inch (ppi) to 300 ppi, greatly improving readability for small text. A new font known as Bookerly is included and Amazon says it is "even more readable" even though "its more aggressive kerning and ligatures may take a bit of getting used to." The layout engine has also been updated with the addition of automatic hyphenation and improved handling of drop caps and embedded charts. The new Paperwhite is available for purchase now and begins shipping June 30.

Active Video Games and Outdoor Play Compared in New Study
One of the stereotypes of gamers is that we are out of shape, because we spend our time in front of screens instead of doing various physical activities. Active video games challenge that perception though, as they can have the player moving their entire body quite a lot. To see how much this movement may amount to, researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have studied the energy expenditure of active video game play and unstructured outdoor play, to see how the compare.
Studies have looked at active video games before, but have not considered energy expenditure when compared to outdoor play. For this study, the Tennessee researchers placed accelerometers on the hips and both wrists of children from five to eight years old. Over a three-week period, the children were monitored during 20 minute sessions of outdoor play or Kinect Adventures River Rush, which was selected because it uses the entire body, requires no special skills, and has an E rating from the ESRB.
The researchers found that active video games could actually be a good source of physical activity, with the hip sensors actually registering more activity for the video game than for outdoor play. Of course this does not mean active video games should become a primary source of physical activity, but that the right game could support a child's physical health.

HTC Implements Promotions in BlinkFeed
HTC has announced that its BlinkFeed mobile application has been integrated with various types of promotions. According to the company, a limited number of promotions will be displayed natively within the application, and only users within the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Taiwan, and China are affected at this time. Since the promotions are natively displayed, they happen to look like any other BlinkFeed post. The promotions will feature sponsored applications from AdNetworks partners such as Yahoo, Twitter, and Appia, as well as HTC auto promotions for new accessories or devices. HTC has noted that the implementation of promotions within BlinkFeed is being done as a pilot, with the company analyzing just how native format promotions happen to appeal to users. As such, it is unknown at this time if promotions within BlinkFeed will be introduced to additional markets.
