Leaked benchmarks on AMD Radeon R9 390X see it beating the Titan X
As we get closer to the official announcement and launch of the Radeon R9 390X from AMD, all we have to enjoy for now are leaked benchmarks that show the "Fiji XT" card beating out the GeForce GTX Titan X, barely.

leaked-benchmarks-amd-radeon-r9-390x-see-beating-titan
With its super-fast HBM, the AMD Radeon R9 390X beats out the NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan X, the unreleased and expected GTX 980 Ti, and every other single GPU solution from NVIDIA in the average scores from 19 benchmarks according to a leaked look at the next-gen card from AMD.

When it comes to power consumption, it looks like AMD's next-gen Fiji architecture and High Bandwidth Memory aren't enough to save it from the perils of high power consumption. The leaked benchmarks show that the R9 390X uses 289W of power, which is just 3W away from the R9 290X which is quite the consumer of power. Comparing this to the Titan X which uses 256W, and the GTX 980 Ti which uses 235W, AMD is once again consuming a large amount of power in order to beat NVIDIA.

leaked-benchmarks-amd-radeon-r9-390x-see-beating-titan
These are of course leaked results, so we can expect a better look from the R9 390X, and the GTX 980 Ti when they're both officially released.

Sony hiring for its 'next generation gaming system', is this the PS5?
We've heard previous rumors of the PlayStation 5 in that it would be a cloud-based console, with the producer of Tekken teasing that it wouldn't be a physical console at all. Now we're seeing job postings from Sony, teasing the PS5 once again.

sony-hiring-next-generation-gaming-system
On the official Sony PlayStation page, the Japanese giant is looking for a "Senior Game Programmer", with the job description reads: "We have an exciting opportunity at Sony Computer Entertainment of America (PlayStation). We seek a senior game programmer to assist us in developing a game used for R&D purposes related to our next generation gaming system. For someone passionate about gaming this is a very rare opportunity. After reviewing the below job profile, if this is you, please apply!"

The PS4 has enjoyed 19 months on the market so far, but most games are not being rendered at 1080p let alone 1080p 60FPS. I think Sony would cannabalize PS4 sales with a new console, but if it introduced the PS5 with a discrete GPU and told consumers and gamers that it was capable of 4K 60FPS and 1080p 120FPS, for $499, it would sell very well. Project Morpheus, Sony's virtual reality headset, is going to need much more grunt than the PS4 is capable of to deliver a great VR experience, so bring on the PS5.

Samsung announces 10nm production for 2016
Intel has already teased that it will begin talking about its plans for 10nm later this year, but rival Samsung has said that it plans to ramp up its 10nm production sometime in 2016.

samsung-announces-10nm-production-late-2016
Samsung has confirmed that the smaller node will be in "full production" sometime in 2016, but other than that, it was very coy about its plans. With Intel expected to be the first to 10nm, its rivals are now playing catch up, with 2016 being the year of 10nm technology. TSMC isn't far behind with 10nm, either.

The South Korean electronics giant has also confirmed that its 14nm FinFET technology is being made in four foundries, with two of them located in South Korea, and two of them in the United States.

We are to expect keynote speakers to include Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe, Chief Scientist Michael Abrash, and CTO John Carmack. According to a blog post from Oculus, the conference will provide "everything developers need to know to launch on the Rift and Gear VR". Samsung now has its second generation Gear VR out in the wild, which can be powered by the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 edge smartphones.

In just over two weeks time on June 11, we have the "Step into the Rift" event in San Francisco, where we should be fully introduced to the first consumer Oculus Rift, the CV1. With company founder Palmer Luckey in some seriously hot water of accusations that he stole secret documents from his ex-VR employer, it'll be interesting to see if Luckey tackles any questions regarding this at Oculus Connect 2.

BlackBerry slashing jobs, continues shift away from smartphones
It was just a few days ago when BlackBerry CEO John Chen said his company could make the handset business profitable again, that didn't mean BlackBerry won't get rid of some employees. It's unknown how many employees are being let go, but most work in the device business - while BlackBerry adds engineers and select workers.

"We continue to grow customer-facing teams around the world, and we continue to invest in bringing in new talent to support areas of strategic focus around software, enterprise, security and the Internet of Things, for example," the company said in a statement.

The company remains dedicated to the enterprise, providing enterprise software and hardware, IoT, and cybersecurity.

BlackBerry once dominated the smartphone market, but was unable to keep up when Apple iOS and Google Android took over the market. Even though Chen continues to do a good job in turning around the company, there is plenty of work left to be done.

Intel will talk about its 10nm production later this year
Intel has said that the development of its 10nm technology is coming along well, with the chipmaker to begin talking about its plans for the future using 10nm later in the year.

intel-talk-10nm-production-later-year
President of Intel, Renee James, said during a recent Q&A session with stockholders at Intel's annual meeting: "The 10nm development is progressing very well. You will start to see start-up cost in the second half of the year on 10nm. We will talk about the timing of [10nm] later this year - the early part of next year about when that will happen".

We don't know much about Intel and its 10nm manufacturing process, but the company is wanting to increase transistor density, while reducing per transistor cost. This is something that other companies have failed to do with their shift into 14nm and 16nm FinFET processes, but Intel will hopefully see much more success with its 10nm technology.

In particular our new tyre model is a superb step forward towards realism, letting you explore where the limit is and allowing you to instantly feel much more connected with the car".

He continued: "You can now experience the changes in grip caused by temperature changes, wear, car set-up, debris and weather conditions. Palmer Luckey being sued by his previous employee over the Oculus Rift
Palmer Luckey is in some very hot water, and unfortunately, this event is happening in the real-world and not a virtual one. The founder of Oculus VR has been accused of stealing confidential information with his previous employer, and "passing it off as his own" reports Reuters.

palmey-luckey-accused-stealing-confidential-documents
Hawaii-based Total Recall Technologies has said that it hired Luckey in 2011, where he was tasked at building a prototype head mounted display. Luckey signed a confidentiality agreement, according to a lawsuit filed on Wednesday. In the second half of 2011 and well into 2012, Luckey took feedback and information to "improve the design of the display" reports Reuters. Luckey then reportedly used that information he learned and took to Kickstarter to build his own headset, which has turned into the Oculus Rift.

Total Recall Technologies is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, but it hasn't mentioned a specific amount. This could be quite damaging to not only Oculus VR, but Facebook, with Luckey in the firing line. Oculus, Facebook and Luckey have all reportedly denied comment thus far. With the Oculus Rift set to nearly start the VR headset market by itself, I'm sure that amount of considerable.

Virtual reality being used to help train football players
It looks like virtual reality is still destined to rule video games and movies, but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of other uses. Silicon Valley company STRIVR Labs is developing a virtual reality sports tool that allows football players to make play reads, learn plays interactively, and execute game-type reps using an Oculus VR Rift headset.

"It was one of the few times in your coaching career when you're watching something and you think, 'This is a game-changer,'" said Bret Bielema, coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks college football team, in a statement to the media. This is gonna change the way we teach young men."

Technology is fully embraced by collegiate and professional sports, with game film and plays distributed via HDTVs, smartphones and tablets - with VR expected to add a new element. It's especially helpful in sports because coaches can have players make natural movements like they were in an actual game or scrimmage, while all the data is immediately captured.

A growing number of adult entertainment companies want to embrace virtual reality, with Lovense, a company focused on sex toys, teaming up with Virtual Real Porn.

lovense-teams-up-virtual-real-porn-adult-themed-vr-content
Lovense will create toys that Virtual Real Porn will integrate with the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift headset, among other tech VR products.

"This was an unexpected partnership, but we believe it is a positive development for Lovense," said Dan Liu, founder of Lovense, in a statement published by VentureBeat. "Our focus is to use sex tech products to solve problems for consumers, but when they approached us, we immediately saw the potential."

Pornography is never too far behind new technology developments, with the idea of VR porn surely appealing to users. Virtual Real Porn is currently developing Google Android and Apple iOS versions of its app - and it looks like developers have plenty of opportunity for VR porn, especially with Oculus saying they won't necessarily ban it.

Unfriended (2015) Cinema Movie Review
unfriended-2015-cinema-movie-review

Unfriended (2015)

Since the launch of the 1999 found-film horror flick The Blair Witch Project which recouped $25 million during its theatrical run on a $50,000 budget (and went on to earn much, much from home video), studios have tried their best to offset huge budgeted 'event' pictures, with sprinklings of more economical, less star-powered horror pictures such as Saw, The Purge, and The Conjuring. But as happens with all things, a concept grows used and tired, and becomes in need of rejuvenation. Enter Unfriended - an innovative and topical horror film for the social media generation.

unfriended-2015-cinema-movie-review
On the occasion of the first year anniversary of the death of high school student Laura Barns, former student Blaire (Shelley Hennig) converses with a group of friends over Skype, including with her boyfriend Mitch (Jacob Joseph Storm), before a mysterious and uninvited user 'billie227' find its way into the conversation. Unable to remove the user, the friends soon find their social media accounts compromised, which quickly generates fear and suspicion amongst the friends, as one by one their malicious streaks are laid bare and their part in Barns death are revealed.

unfriended-2015-cinema-movie-review
Taking place entirely from the confines of what could be the desktop of any teenager's computer, as the films opens, Unfriended is at first a little jarring, as social media programs and browser windows flip open with wild abandon as we peek into a sexually charged Skype conversation between the two lead characters. After a short while, the audience adjusts to the setup and shares a knowing familiarity with the experience - typing out a message while the mouse hovers over 'send', until a second and third version of the dialogue is broadcast.

The authenticity of this setup, reinforced by the licensed platforms on show - from Skype to iMessage, to Facebook and Instagram is the sole innovation of Unfriended, which lends an air of reality to the film which I perhaps wasn't necessarily expecting, but helps to ground the more outlandish elements into a sense of reality - a heady drama equal parts jealousy, teenage angst, sexual tension, and bitchiness.

unfriended-2015-cinema-movie-review
Sadly, any unique qualities that set 'Unfriended' apart from its forebears quickly dissipates as it falls back on the tried and true collective of horror clichés, including (but not limited to) fleeting glimpses of horror and blood splatter, loud thumping noises and a droning monotone score which foreshadows that something awful is imminent. The tension generated as the cast disappear one-by-one at the hands (spirit?) of Blaire never truly gets a payoff.

The cast of relative unknowns do a fine enough job of doing what the script calls on them to do, i.e. acting like kids unburdened by a sense of morality or common sense (as afflicts many teens), but no one's going to be winning an Oscar for their contributions.

Ultimately, for all the deaths seen and not seen, the worst, most horrible execution is reserved for Unfriended's clever and innovative concept which hasn't really been explored in a feature film before. But with a $40m box office take on a $1 million budget, (which reminds me - how on Earth did it cost that much to make this film? Surely it was sponsored to surplus by product placement alone?) something tells me that this isn't the last we'll see of Unfriended.
