Elon Musk lays out vision for a battery-powered future
Tesla may be best known for its electric cars, but founder Elon Musk has broader ambitions for the company's battery packs. Last night, the would-be battery baron unveiled his vision. Operating under the umbrella of Tesla Energy, Musk wants to use Tesla's battery technology to help improve the viability of solar power and other renewable energy generation methods.
One of the major problems of solar energy and other renewables is the inherently cyclical nature of the generation methods. Wind doesn't always blow, and ...

Inside ARM's Cortex-A72 microarchitecture
Thanks in part to the smartphone market's rapid move toward 64-bit-capable processors, ARM's licensable CPU cores have seen an upsurge in high-visibility deployments this year. From the Exynos version of Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 to newer offerings like the Qualcomm-based LG G4, ARM's Cortex-A57 has become the new standard for processing power in Android phones. That's a bit of a change from the last couple of years, when custom cores like Qualcomm's Krait dominated the same landscape.
The folks at ARM know that they have to keep progressing in order to remain competitive with the customers who license their instruction set for custom core development. ...

Asus' 144Hz MG279Q monitor may top out at 90Hz with FreeSync
We've been eagerly awaiting the release of Asus' MG279Q, a FreeSync display with an IPS panel and a fast 144Hz peak refresh rate. It appears that the MG279Q may not be able to refresh at top speed in FreeSync mode, however. A poster on the SweClockers forums received their MG279Q a couple days back, and they discovered that the display will only enter FreeSync mode with the system set to refresh rates between 35Hz and 90Hz.
Forum posts might not be the most credible source, but there's official confirmation of this limitation, too. The 35Hz-90Hz range is repeated in Asus' own FreeSync FAQ ...

DirectX 12 Multiadapter shares work between discrete, integrated GPUs
During its Build conference yesterday, Microsoft revealed that its next-gen graphics API offers enhanced support for accelerating performance with multiple GPUs. Dubbed DirectX 12 Multiadapter, this capability gives developers explicit control over GPU resources. It works with not only traditional CrossFire and SLI setups, which team multiple discrete graphics cards, but also with hybrid configurations that combine discrete and integrated GPUs.
According to Direct3D development lead Max McMullen, who presented a Build session on graphics performance , DX12's Multiadapter mojo lets developers generate and execute commands in parallel on ...

AMD delays FreeSync support for multi-GPU systems
Monitors with AMD's FreeSync technology are finally shipping, but support for the variable-refresh tech has been limited to PCs with single Radeon GPUs thus far. AMD had promised to release drivers with FreeSync support for CrossFire setups this month, but it appears that there will be a bit of a wait yet. AMD released a message on its support forums today stating that "support for AMD FreeSync monitors on a multi-GPU system is not quite ready for release."
AMD's post doesn't offer any other details or reasoning for the delay. The company says "we will continue to develop and test this solution in accordance with our stringent ...

BenQ's curved 35'' gaming monitor updates at 144Hz
Add another 21:9 monitor to the ranks. BenQ's new XR3501 is the latest display to adopt the ultra-wide aspect ratio, but that's not the only trick up its sleeve. The screen is also curved, with a "2000R" arc that's more extreme than other wrap-around units. And it can hit high refresh rates, too.

MS wants Win10 on a billion devices, will support Android apps
Microsoft wants Windows 10 to be the platform for developers. At its Build 2015 keynote this afternoon, the company set some ambitious targets for Windows 10 adoption, and it unveiled some initiatives to make building Windows apps easier for developers also working on competing platforms.
Windows 10 wouldn't be appealing to developers without a large installed base. To that end, Microsoft wants as many devices as possible running Windows 10, and it's set a target of a billion devices running Windows 10 within ...

MSI's Prestige Series notebooks are all about color
Content creators like photographers and videographers demand consistent color reproduction between displays, but screens with 100% sRGB coverage are pretty rare in notebooks outside of bulky, expensive mobile workstations. MSI's new Prestige Series might bridge that gap. The company claims that the displays in these portable PCs are factory-calibrated, and that they reproduce 100% of the sRGB gamut. That's impressive in a notebook that starts at $1,199.
