Umbra action RPG uses Megascans tech to glorious effect
You ever come across a game that looks way better than it should for its genre? No? Well, look no further. Umbra is an action RPG (aka "Diablo clone") that sneers from its high perch at all the previous attempts to make such a game look good. Hit up the Kickstarter page and feast your eyes.
Not content with using CryEngine 3, the developers are going for the whole hog with Megascans , a 3D assets library about the size of two Kardashian behinds. Megascans assets are made from highly detailed scans of actual real-world ...

The Witcher 3 developer explains controversial graphics downgrade
Anyone who's followed The Witcher 3's development from the first teasers and trailers to the finished product has likely noticed not-quite-subtle changes to the graphics—and definitely not for the better. A NeoGaf poster whipped up a quick comparison, and the differences are rather stark, I'd say. And this guy agrees.
Eurogamer asked developer CD Projekt Red about the graphical downgrade. According to the team behind the game, the eye candy in the early tech demo would have ...

Gigabyte's Z97-HD3 motherboard reviewed
The market is awash with inexpensive Z97 motherboards, many of them less than $100. One such example is Gigabyte's entry-level Z97-HD3, the most affordable rung on the firm's Z97 ladder. With a $99.99 street price, the Z97-HD3 is $55 cheaper than the Z97X-UD5H that Geoff reviewed almost a year ago. That savings almost equals the cost of an Anniversary Edition Pentium CPU.
Unlike the mid-range UD5H, which is loaded with features, the HD3 is a decidedly budget affair. You don't get multiple flavors of next-gen storage, dual GigE ...

Time Warner slings free Maxx upgrades to counter Google Fiber
I've been chronicling the slow progress of Google Fiber moving into my metro area, my city, and eventually, into my house. Since Google Fiber started building in the Kansas City area, a funny thing has happened: competition. Even before the Google announcement, we had the option of AT&T U-Verse or Time Warner Cable in my neighborhood. Then Google did its thing, and AT&T later announced the rollout of its own fiber product in parts of the metro. Meanwhile, my incumbent cable provider, Time Warner, has raised the speeds of our cable Internet service several times at no extra charge.
I get the sense that we're pretty fortunate around here, all things considered, compared to a lot of areas ...

Catalyst 15.5 beta may help Radeons in The Witcher 3, Project Cars
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Project Cars aren't running so well right now for those with AMD graphics cards. The fight over Project Cars is especially ugly. Developer Slightly Mad Studios has gone so far as to officially deny accusations that it intentionally crippled performance for the red team's Radeons by using PhysX. Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red has also come under fire for implementing Nvidia's HairWorks, which reportedly performs poorly on AMD cards (and, to be fair, on Nvidia's own hardware, too).
Whatever the cause of these problems, AMD seems to believe it can improve performance in ...

Razer makes an amazing technicolor mousepad
Is there anywhere RGB LEDs won't turn up these days? In a keyboard or mouse, OK. Headsets? That's a little silly. Razer has somehow found a way to up the ante even further. Its latest mousepad, called the Firefly, features a layer of RGB LED illumination underneath its mousing surface.

YouTube live streamers can now broadcast at 60 FPS
Twitch may be the biggest name in live streaming these days, but YouTube is taking steps to make its own service more appealing. After adding 60 FPS playback support a while back, YouTube is now previewing 60 FPS streaming at 720p and 1080p resolutions.
The new streaming platform is blessedly built on HTML5, so you'll need a compatible browser in order to stream at the higher frame rate. A new HTML5 stream player is also available, and it supports neat ...

Collaborative rendering reduces bandwidth for streaming games
Researchers at Microsoft and Duke University have developed a way to dramatically reduce the amount of bandwidth consumed by games streamed from remote servers. Dubbed Kahawai, the approach uses "collaborative rendering" to split the workload between the GPU on the server and the one on the client device. This virtual tag team consumes one-sixth the bandwidth of traditional streaming, the researchers claim, and there's supposed to be no impact on latency or image quality.
Kahawai actually comprises two separate techniques. One tasks the client GPU with rendering a subset of the frames required by the scene, while the server GPU fills in the rest. The other approach uses the client GPU to render each ...

$60 tuner almost turns the Xbox One into a DVR
Windows Media Center may be dead, but that doesn't mean Microsoft has given up on DVRs. The Xbox One can now tune in to over-the-air broadcasts with a Hauppauge tuner. The $60 unit is cheaper than a similar tuner introduced for Xbone preview members last month—and it's available to everyone in the U.S. and Canada. There's also a $100 bundle that includes an antenna.
