Emergency measures were also in place in neighboring Argentina, where the picturesque city of Bariloche -- about 100 kilometers from the volcano -- said it was anticipating the arrival of ash clouds within hours and warned people to stay at home. Puerto Montt, over the border from Bariloche and the largest Chilean city in the area, was already blanketed in a cloud of ash. "People are very, very frightened," said Gervoy Paredes, mayor of Puerto Montt.

'I thought ... I was dead': dancer maimed in Boston bombing
U.S. District Judge George O'Toole speaks during the sentencing phase of the murder trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in a courtroom sketchBy Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - When ballroom dancer Adrianne Haslet-Davis heard a blast as she stood at the finish line of the Boston Marathon two years ago, she knew it was no accident and suspected another explosion would follow. "I couldn't hear myself scream," Haslet-Davis on Wednesday told the jurors who will determine if convicted bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is sentenced to death or life in prison. "I thought that because I couldn't hear myself scream, I was dead." Federal prosecutors called a series of witnesses who described what they lost when the 21-year-old ethnic Chechen and his brother set off a pair of homemade pressure-cooker bombs at the race's crowded finish line on April 15, 2013. Would-be Reagan assassin seeks expanded freedom in Virginia
FILE PHOTO OF JOHN HINCKLEY JR.By Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Would-be U.S. presidential assassin John Hinckley Jr. should be allowed to reside full time away from the mental hospital where he has lived since shooting Ronald Reagan in 1981, his lawyer argued in federal court on Wednesday. In his opening statement, Hinckley's lawyer Barry Levine requested he be granted convalescent leave, the equivalent of outpatient status, so he could live full time with his 89-year-old mother. "There is no dispute that Mr. Hinckley is clinically ready for the next step in treatment, which is convalescent leave," Levine told U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman. The government opposed Levine's request, with prosecutor Colleen Kennedy saying the provisions suggested for expanded release were inadequate for a would-be presidential assassin.

Arizona's Sheriff Arpaio says he delegated court order on profiling
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announces newly launched program aimed at providing security around schools in Anthem ArizonaBy David Schwartz PHOENIX (Reuters) - Controversial Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio dodged questions on Wednesday over whether he was to blame for allowing deputies to violate a court order blocking immigrants from being detained solely on the suspicion of being in the country illegally. Arpaio, who bills himself as "America's toughest sheriff," was testifying at a hearing in federal court to determine if he and four others should be held in civil contempt in connection with the long-running racial profiling case. Speaking in a rasping and sometimes shaky voice, the 82-year-old told the Phoenix courtroom that others were given the task of complying with the judge's 2011 court order. "I delegated this court order to my subordinates and counsel that represent me," Arpaio said.
