A fresh look at storage performance with PCIe SSDs
For years, SSDs thrived under the Serial ATA banner. New generations got bigger, faster, and cheaper. Prices continue to fall and densities continue to increase, but performance has been stagnating for a while. The problem is the SATA 6Gbps interface, whose limited bandwidth keeps modern flash storage from living up to its true potential.
Fortunately, SSDs aren't inexorably tied to Serial ATA. They can tap into PCI Express, which promises substantially more bandwidth through faster signaling and ...

Leaked specs detail Intel's 14-nm Braswell SoCs
Intel's Cherry Trail chips, as seen in Microsoft's Surface 3, represent one half of its two-pronged strategy for 14-nm SoCs. Those Atom-branded chips are meant for tablets like the Surface. The other half—code-named Braswell—hasn't been officially announced yet, but details of have leaked over at CPU World. Here are the specs:
Where will these new SoCs end up? Intel says Braswell chips are for "entry level 2-in-1 devices, laptops, desktops, and All-in-One PCs." Given that description, it seems likely we'll see Braswell in products similar to those based on the last-generation Bay ...

Here are our musings on the new MacBook
I thought we had a pretty solid discussion of the new MacBook in our recent podcast, so it seemed like a good idea to cut that segment into a seperate video. You can just feel the tension holding back Geoff's rage over the port configuration, but I think it makes a certain kind of sense. See what you think about it.

Microsoft unveils Atom-powered Surface 3 tablet
Microsoft announced the rumored update to its non-Pro Surface today, and it's called Surface 3. The new tablet resembles a shrunken Surface Pro 3 in many ways. Most importantly, it ditches the ARM CPU and Windows RT OS from previous non-Pro tablets in favor of a quad-core Intel Atom x7 CPU and Windows 8.1.

Source code references hint at Tegra X1 Chromebooks
Nvidia's Tegra SoCs have already worked their way into a couple of Chromebooks. Acer rolled out a 13-incher in August, while HP added a larger 14" unit in December. Both are based on the Tegra K1, and now, evidence points to the possible existence of next-gen Chrome devices with the latest Tegra X1 chip.
According to CNX Software , references to a "T210" processor have appeared in the Chromium and Coreboot source code. That designation is short for Tegra 210—and Tegra X1—the site says. The references appear to ...

Samsung's 850 EVO M.2 solid-state drive reviewed
When we reviewed Samsung's 850 EVO SSD last year, we commented on its remarkably compact internals. Although the drive comes in a standard 2.5" case, the underlying circuit board occupies a fraction of that footprint. It was only a matter of time before Samsung rolled out miniaturized versions designed for smaller mSATA and M.2 form factors. And here they are:

mSATA (left), M.2 (middle), and 2.5" (right) flavors of the 850 EVO
Apart from conforming to smaller form factors, the mini EVOs are identical to their full-sized siblings. They use the same 3D V-NAND with 32 layers and three bits per cell, and they accelerate writes with the same SLC caching scheme. They also use the same Samsung ...

New Windows 10 build includes Project Spartan browser
There's been plenty of news about Project Spartan of late, but Microsoft hasn't made the new browser available to members of the Windows 10 Technical Preview—at least, not until now. According to a pair of posts on the Windows Blog, those on the fast track release channel for the Win10 preview should have access to build 10049, which includes an early version of Project Spartan. Here are the details:
It’s important to note we’ll have more features and many improvements coming to Project Spartan before we make it broadly available. This preview is NOT a polished, ready-for-everyone release. For Windows ...

GeForce Experience update streamlines GameStream setup
Nvidia's GameStream tech lets GeForce owners stream PC games to Shield devices. The pairing process is a bit involved, though. Users have to enter a PIN on the PC for each Shield device they want to use, and they need to configure port forwarding on their router to stream games from remote networks. Today, Nvidia updated its GeForce Experience and Shield Hub applications to smooth out the GameStream setup process.
The new pairing process requires that Shield owners use the same Nvidia account to log into the GeForce Experience app on their PCs and the Shield Hub Android app on ...

Nvidia may update Shield portable with Tegra X1
Nvidia may not be keeping its latest Shield gaming hardware chained to a set-top box. According to some Bluetooth certification documents uncovered by Chinese Android site Juggly and similar Wi-Fi Alliance documentation discovered by Liliputing, Nvidia may be updating its Shield handheld with the company's latest Tegra X1 SoC.

Report: Intel considering acquiring Altera
Intel and FPGA maker Altera have been working together for some time. The two firms collaborated on an Atom processor with an embedded FPGA back in 2010, and a few years later, Altera inked a deal to have some of its chips fabbed on Intel's 14-nm processs. Now, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Intel is considering buying Altera outright.
"People familiar with the matter" tell the WSJ that the acquisition talks have reached the "advanced" stage. There's no word on the price tag, but Altera is one of ...

Here's our take on Vulkan, the next OpenGL
One of the biggest things that happened at GDC a few weeks ago was the introduction of the Vulkan graphics API, which is the new, close-to-the-metal graphics programming standard from the folks behind OpenGL. I've simply been too busy to give Vulkan a proper write-up like it deserves, but we did talk about it on the TR Podcast. For those of you might be interested, here's that segment from the podcast. We talk about the API's introduction, who was involved, and what it could mean for PC gaming and graphics.
