US Government Restricts Selling Powerful Computer Components to Certain Nations
The US Department of Commerce has recently added persons and entities in China, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates to the Entity List, which is the list of entities that certain items should not be sold to. This is determined by the End-User Review Committee, which considers if the end user will use the products in ways "contrary to the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States." China was added to the list, calling for all licenses to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, because the hardware is used in Chinese supercomputers that are used for "nuclear explosive activities." Entities in Pakistan and the UAE were added because of links to the Haqqani Network, which is designated as a foreign terrorist organization, so the license review policy is now presumption of denial. These new license requirements apply to transactions where the eleven total new entities on the list, maybe the ultimate end user.
In the same document, a Germany entity was taken off the list. Apparently another entity of the same name was added to the list in 2013, so the unrelated German company requested it be removed, because being on the list was hurting its business.

Keeping Electrons Cool to Make Efficient Electronics
Efficiency has always been a priority when it comes to designing electronics, and with today's nanotechnologies, the ways to achieve it are more becoming much more advanced. Researchers at the University of Texas at Arlington have been awarded a $300,000 grant from the NSF to work on a new transistor design that could improve efficiency by a factor of ten.
This new transistor design is quite different from traditional designs as all of the components are contained in a single nanopillar, less than 50 nm in diameter, and arranged vertically, so they can still be packed in on a chip. Besides its geometry, the transistors are also special because the electrons can flow through them without heating up. This is achieved by passing the electrons through a quantum well, which will cool them down to -228 ºC at room temperature, and without special external means. By keeping the electrons cool, the transistors can operate with less energy, and of course generate less heat. The results would be longer battery lives and/or lighter loads to carry.

Experience The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 4K
Just about a month remains before we can step back into the boots of Geralt of Rivia, but developer CD Projekt RED is giving us a little tease of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 4K. The detail is, to be expected, outstanding, with the stubble on Geralt looking like the real thing, fabric and leather that looks good enough to wear, and environments that are truly impressive. Oh, and those wolves do not look like something to trifle with, but remember this is Geralt you're playing as, a professional monster hunter. There are far worse things in the wilds, with perhaps the most dangerous being the witcher himself. One of Geralt's new hairstyles is reflected in the screenshots, which we'll be getting as part of the sixteen free DLCs.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt arrives on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 19. An Expansion Pass is available for $24.99 that includes two expansions totaling 30 hours (or more). For full-size images, you can check those out at the source, as the ones below are downsized to only HD.

Far Cry 4 Running at 5K Looks Amazing
PC Gamer has been kind enough to share some screenshots it recently took while running Far Cry 4 at 5K. The screenshots really show off what the game brings to the table in terms of graphical fidelity, and at such a high resolution, the details of the different environments throughout Far Cry 4 look stunning. Environments look great, of course, but really everything in each screenshot is packed with detail and is just a sight to behold.
The screenshots below are downsized, but for the full-size images, do head over to the sources.

Cosmological Mile Markers Less Standard than Thought
For any scientific endeavor, you must have accurate measurements because without them a slew of calculations can be thrown off or produce incorrect results. A research team, led by researchers at the University of Arizona, has discovered that certain cosmological measurements are inaccurate, and that our understanding of dark energy may be off.
For a long time it was believed that the size of the Universe was constant, and then it was determined to be expanding, but today we know the expansion is actually accelerating. The exact cause of this acceleration is not known, but has been given the name dark energy. It was discovered by measuring the light emitted by type Ia supernovas, which are explosions of white dwarf stars, throughout the history of the Universe, and comparing their brightness. It has long been believed that this type of supernova is constant and thus always produces the same light, thereby allowing them to act as cosmic candles. What the researchers discovered is that these supernovae are not as constant as believed, as one looks back in time. Instead the researchers found that two distinct populations exist, with those nearer to us being more red than those farther away, from when the Universe was younger.
This discovery was only made possible thanks to the ultraviolet capabilities of the NASA Swift satellite, as the differences in visible light are much more subtle. The researchers found this different both in their own datasets and in others. The exact implications this discovery may have on our understanding of dark energy and astronomy are not yet known and will require a great deal more data to determine.
