AMD to release FreeSync-capable drivers on March 19
NVIDIA's GeForce GTX Titan X is right around the corner, so it's time for AMD to come stomping on its parade with a new FreeSync-capable driver. We're sad it's not the Radeon R9 390X, but this will do until then.

amd-release-freesync-capable-drivers-march-19
AMD is seeing FreeSync monitors in multiple regions so far, with the company talking about its FreeSync drivers coming on March 19 recently. AMD said: "AMD is very excited that monitors compatible with AMD FreeSync technology are now available in select regions in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). We know gamers are excited to bring home an incredibly smooth and tearing-free PC gaming experience powered by AMD Radeon GPUs and AMD A-Series APUs. We're pleased to announce that a compatible AMD Catalyst graphics driver to enable AMD FreeSync technology for single-GPU configurations will be publicly available on AMD.com starting March 19, 2015. Support for AMD CrossFire configurations will be available the following month in April 2015".

This is great to see, as it means that NVIDIA has competition against its G-Sync module and G-Sync powered monitors that are on the market. AMD has plenty of monitors coming out this year with FreeSync baked in, with sizes between a 34-inch ultrawide monitor from LG (which we have on the way), right up to 4K, and back down to 1440p and 1080p, giving gamers and consumers plenty to choose from.

Google rumored to be working on Android VR
With the VR game really heating up over the Game Developers Conference, does it come as any surprise that Google is reportedly working on something that mixes the world of VR with its Android operating system? Probably not.

google-rumored-working-android-vr
The report is coming from The Wall Street Journal and its "two unnamed sources" who say that the Mountain View-based search giant is working on a version of Android that can power VR applications. The Journal reports that "tens of engineers" are working on the Android VR project, which should end up being free like Android is for tablets, smartphones and wearables.

The WSJ reports that Android VR has Clay Bavor and Jeremy Doig leading the project, where Bavor was "partly responsible for Google Cardboard" reports The Verge.

The closest look at the NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan X is here
When NVIDIA's founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang tease the world with the first GeForce GTX Titan X during the Epic Games GDC 2015 event, the world went crazy. We kind of knew it was coming, but were expecting it to be unveiled at NVIDIA's own GTC 2015 event starting on March 17.

closest-look-nvidia-geforce-gtx-titan-here
Well, media samples are now spreading across the world with TechGage receiving their sample and taking some up close and personal shots. There's nothing new to tell you here, but we do have a much better look at the card itself. Sitting next to a GeForce GTX 980, we can see in the above shot that the Titan X looks virtually identical from the front (or top in the case of this photo), with the only difference being "GTX 980" and "TITAN" and of course the color scheme has been changed from silver, to a blackish color.

closest-look-nvidia-geforce-gtx-titan-here
The Titan X has had its backplate removed, which I'm sure is because the GM200 GPU powering the Titan X and its 12GB of VRAM runs much hotter than the GTX 980. The GTX 980's backplate gets ridiculously hot as it is, so I think this is a great move by NVIDIA and something that needed to be done in order to keep the card from getting too hot.

closest-look-nvidia-geforce-gtx-titan-here
We have a 250W TDP on the GTX Titan X, which comes in from its 1 x 6-pin and 1 x 8-pin PCIe connectors.

We should have our sample soon, so expect some glorious pictures to be taken in a few days time. NVIDIA's GTC 2015 event is also right around the corner with TweakTown invited, so you can be sure to get all of the GTC 2015 content as soon as it breaks from us here at TT.

'The dress' used for good, now in women's violence awareness campaign
The Salvation Army (The Salvos) has taken this highly controversial dress and used it for something other than Facebook arguments with their new campaign that asks the question "Why is it so hard to see black and blue?" Further stating "The only illusion is if you think it was her choice. One in six women are victims of abuse. Stop abuse against women."

dress-used-good-now-womens-violence-awareness-campaign
This has been shared around on various social networks along with almost 5,000 re-tweets on their Twitter feed, showing that the The Salvos have some extremely savvy people working behind the scenes. Viral messages with a purpose have begun to pop up in recent times, bringing the ALS ice bucket challenge first to mind.

If you haven't kept up with what exactly 'the dress' is, it's a Roman Originals model that looked blue and black to some and white and gold to others. Striking massive debate throughout the internet a few days ago.

'World of Warcraft' gamer dies after 19 hours of uninterrupted play
While Blizzard recommend 15 minute breaks every hour of game play, anyone who has played 'World of Warcraft' knows that's sometimes difficult to abide by. Well, nigh impossible. Still, 19 hours is quite the lengthy stretch and for one gamer - it's cost his life.

world-warcraft-gamer-dies-19-hours-uninterrupted-play
According to NG4M, 24 year old Chinese man Wu Tai was deeply immersed in the game at a Shanghai internet cafe for 19 hours, before he begun coughing up blood and collapsing in his seat. A fellow gamer seated next to him reports that he let out a groan and begun dabbing his mouth on a blood-stained handkerchief. When asked if he was OK, Wu Tai replied "He'd felt better, but that he would be OK". An ambulance was quickly called, but the man sadly died at the scene.

So next time you feel like taking a break - take a walk around, get a drink and go for a stretch. It might just save your life. Alternatively, limit those gaming sessions to just a few hours... if you can.

Blizzard will soon offer no subscriptions for World of Warcraft
Blizzard has announced its plans for non-subscription-based options for its time-sucking game World of Warcraft, something the company is calling "WoW Tokens".

blizzard-soon-offer-subscriptions-world-warcraft
The way WoW Tokens work is that they can be purchased with real money, with players able to sell these Tokens within the World of Warcraft auction house. Other WoW players can then purchase these WoW Tokens from the auction house with their in-game gold, where they will have 30 days of game time attached to them.

Blizzard has developed a special formula to determine the price of these WoW Tokens in the store, where the developer will "take into account supply and demand for Tokens as well as other elements of the World of Warcraft economy in each region" reports Polygon. The Tokens are not resellable, because they are set at a gold price, so once you've purchased it from the auction house, the WoW Token is soulbound to your character, and must be redeemed by you, and you only.

Apple rumored to launch its new 12-inch Retina MacBook Air in Q2 2015
According to the latest news from The Wall Street Journal, Apple is preparing to launch its new MacBook Air that will feature a Retina class display. We might even see the first sneak peek at it when Apple hosts its media event next week.

apple-rumored-launch-new-12-inch-retina-macbook-air-q2-2015
WSJ is reporting that manufacturers have received orders from Apple to begin spinning up the mass production of the new MBA, which should begin shipping in the next three months. The current MacBook Air is offered with an 11.6-inch or 13.3-inch display, but 1366x768 or 1440x900 resolutions, respectively. The new Retina MacBook Air could pump this up to 1920x1080 or even 2560x1440 on its 12-inch display.

Something Apple has to be careful of is the battery drain on the new Retina-powered MBA, as the higher resolution is sure to suck more juice. But, we should see Apple adopting Intel's new Broadwell-based processors, which should counter that higher battery consumption with less power consumption on the CPU and GPU side of things.

Sony not worried about the price of its VR headset during development
GDC 2015 - During the development of its VR headset, Sony has said that "price has not been driving our development process" for Project Morpheus. The words come directly from President of Sony's Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment, Shuhei Yoshida.

sony-worried-price-vr-headset-during-development
Yoshida continued: "The first time people try VR is the most dangerous time. People get used to it after a while, but the first is the most susceptible to motion sickness. So we want to get the hardware right". He added: "Now we feel that we have the system, we have passed the threshold that we set out. Then, how cheap we can deliver to the consumer? That's the second question we're going to tackle. The number of people who will buy day one hardware will be some kind of reverse function of price, that we understand, but we really need to do it right from day one".

Sony isn't talking about the price of Project Morpheus at all, but Yoshida did say that when it's out, the price of its VR headset will fall with time, just like the PS4. But the entire focus of Project Morpheus isn't the price, but the hardware and the experience. This could mean that Sony might have a more expensive headset on its hands, but just how expensive? How much is too much for you?

Valve confirms it is experimenting around with Half-Life in VR
GDC 2015 - We know that Valve is working on VR now that HTC announced it had partnered up with the company on its recently revealed Vive VR headset, but now Valve has admitted that it is playing around with Half-Life in VR.

valve-confirms-experimenting-around-half-life-vr
Kotaku spoke with Valve at GDC during the week, asking Valve programmer Jeep Barnett about Half-Life in the virtual world of VR. Barnett said: "We've said, 'Let's take some existing art and see how it fits. So yeah, we'll grab some headcrabs, we'll grab the machine guns from Half-Life, the rocket launcher - all those different fun things - and see how they play in VR. But right now, it's a tool for exploring the different kind of game designs we want to do".

When pressed about the possibilities of Valve making Half-Life compatible with VR headsets, Barnett replied with "We're not saying, 'no,' but we don't know what the right thing is [yet]. Our most precious resource is time, and we don't have enough time for people to do everything. Would we like to make all of our franchises in VR? Absolutely. But we don't have enough time or people. So we have to figure out what's the best fit, what plays to the strengths of VR".

If you asked me, I could place good money that Valve is working on Half-Life 3 to be compatible with VR. I think that's why we've been waiting so long, because if you were Valve, would you release the most anticipated game of all time, before or after your VR headset was out?

Rock Band 4 announced, will hit the Xbox One and PS4 end of this year
We knew it was coming, but now it has been confirmed: Rock Band 4 is coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year. Harmonix has also said it teamed up with hardware manufacturer Mad Catz for the accessories side of things.

rock-band-4-announced-hit-xbox-one-ps4-end-year
This is great news, as the developer has said that Rock Band 4 will be backwards compatible with every single Rock Band guitar and drum et you have collected, all the way back to 2007. If you don't want to use your old instruments, the developer will be offering up some new instruments of course. But it's not just the instruments that will be backwards compatible, as all of the previous DLC will be carried over (platform dependant) which is great to see.

The backwards compatibility for both the hardware and DLC could be because Harmonix is no longer being published by EA, where Harmonix has partnered up with Mad Catz to manufacturer the new hardware, as well as distribute the new boxed game. Better yet, Rock Band 4 won't be superseded by another Rock Band game anytime soon, as Harmonix will be updating Rock Band 4 with new songs, modes and other community-driven content.

Rock Band 4 hits the Xbox One and PS4 toward the end of 2015.

AMD to unveil its next-gen Radeon R9 390X at Computex in June
It looks like AMD was using its next generation GPU at the Game Developers Conference, without much fan fare. PC Perspective was there, with Ryan Shrout reporting that AMD was using its next-gen video card to power an Oculus Rift demo.

amd-unveil-next-gen-radeon-r9-390x-computex-june
Shrout met with AMD shortly after, where they told him that the not-so-great looking system was powered by the "upcoming flagship Radeon R9 video card" but nothing else was said. Shrout asked if he could take the side panel off, or look at the driver, or GPU-Z, but he was shut down for every single option.

Then we have KitGuru reporting that AMD will launch its new Radeon 300 series, including the Radeon R9 390X at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan in June. We know that AMD has confirmed new GPUs for Q2 2015, so we should expect an announcement in the next 4-6 weeks, with a full retail launch in June? Surely AMD wouldn't wait until June to launch its new GPU when NVIDIA has just unveiled its GeForce GTX Titan X.

Fitbit Charge HR Fitness Wireless Activity Wristband Review

Fitbit Charge HR Review

In just a few years, the wearable tech product market has exploded, with a variety of useful (and not so useful) devices, carving out a whole new industry and commanding lucrative consumer dollars. Leading the charge is the fitness tracker segment which has a range of new and established companies such as Garmin, Jawbone, LG, Samsung and Microsoft jostling for share in an increasingly busy retail environment. In Australia, Fitbit is the established market leader with a growing range of (currently) six models, which all feature a variety of advancing options. Whilst up until now they've mostly served as glorified pedometers, their latest device - the Fitbit Charge HR - promises to be a far more serious fitness trainer that just a mere step tracker. I spent a week rocking the fitness band to give you my verdict here.

In recent months, I've noticed the popularity explosion of these ubiquitous fitness bands, multiplying all over the arms of friends and family members keen to boast about their newest must-have. Still, I'd questioned their usefulness - does it truly matter if I walk 10,000 steps a day? Enter the latest model Fitbit; the Charge HR which comes with a game changing addition of an active heart rate monitor. Not only does it work beautifully, but it gives far more depth, relevancy and more importantly, accuracy to the seemingly endless stream of statistics that it captures.

In a fairly small and non-descript black band (more colours coming soon, I'm told), the Charge HR comes packing a solid amount of tech, even if hardly sets the world on fire with cutting edge science. At its core, the Charge HR employs the same MEMS 3 axis accelerometer used in many competing bands, which provides much of the core functionality of the band, including steps taken and distance traveled (note there's no GPS on board) with excellent accuracy. An altimeter keeps tabs on your height, with each incline of 3 metres counting as a floor.

The single line, monochrome OLED display is bright and easy to read, albeit small and admittedly unimpressive, but it does help to keep the device to a slim figure and it does include some useful features such as a clock, (with a number of face options) alarm, and incoming call notifications from your Bluetooth equipped smartphone with a gentle vibration. Cycling through the options give you quick access to the step count, your heart rate, calories burn count, distance travelled and floors rose. Users can elect to skip, or change the order they appear via the desktop app.

fitbit-charge-hr-fitness-band-review
The heart rate monitor, which Fitbit dubs 'Pure Pulse', works particularly well, utilizing two low intensity green LEDs, which constantly pulse on the skin to detect blood volume changes in your capillaries. I was very suspicious that this functionality simply wouldn't work as advertised, but a comparison to a range of professional health devices and a good old fashioned pulse check confirms its accuracy beyond doubt. Very occasionally during high intensity workouts, the monitor will be unable to gauge an accurate figure, either due to the accumulation of sweat or centrifugal force from your arm flailing around, but the Charge HR will simply extrapolate the data from either side of a successful reading and render an estimate.

Somewhat less impressive was the altimeter function which employs a barometric pressure reading to calculate incline, which led to the award of an extra 15 storeys, while the back seat passenger on a four hour country road drive. The sleep monitoring function is eerily accurate (down to the minute I dozed off), but I'm unsure how useful the information is other than an interesting, yet ultimately useless statistic. How can you really control the internal and external forces which dictate your quality of your sleep?

fitbit-charge-hr-fitness-band-review
For someone who has never worn a watch due to irritability, I found the Charge HR surprisingly comfortable and unobtrusive, although some TLC is required. Washing the band in light water and drying after a rigorous workout comes highly recommended. I can report I suffered none of the widely publicised 'arm rash' problems, which I understand is predominantly only affecting those with a pre-existing allergy to the elastomer material on the band.

Equipped with low voltage Bluetooth 4.0, the Charge HR syncs to your smartphone or via the supplied USB dongle and both worked flawlessly in tandem. Whilst there are some slight variances in the iOS and Android apps, both are excellent (with the edge slightly to iOS), and enjoy rock solid stability. For everyday information, the apps do a great job of displaying the most pressing vital stats, whilst the PC app gives access to a much broader suite of statistics and interactive graphs to illustrate your health progression, and also alter a range of band settings. I didn't particularly care for the water and food logging options, the latter of which is particularly geared to the US market, but those prepared to invest the time to dial down to calorie counting and portion control can try their luck.

fitbit-charge-hr-fitness-band-review
In light of the claim of the promised "five plus days" of battery life, I was slightly disappointed that I could get little more than three and a half, although charging is rapid at under two hours via USB or a smartphone/ tablet wall socket 5V USB adaptor.

fitbit-charge-hr-fitness-band-review
As a health companion, the Fitbit Charge HR is an excellent choice for those looking for a little encouragement to remain active during the day, or to lose weight and stay fit and healthy. Naturally, the Fitbit can't do the work for you - you'll only get the results you want by employing its encouragement, but the band serves as an ever present, yet gentle reminder to walk a little bit farther, work a bit harder, and be more mindful about what you eat - and maybe it will even get you taking the stairs, instead of the elevator. There's no doubt room for Fitbit to add and improve features in future models, but for now, the Fitbit Charge HR is a fantastic little unit that I highly recommend and will adorn my arm for a long time to come.

Valve Announces Link, Source 2, SteamVR, and More at GDC
Valve announces a number of product and technologies at this week's Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. "We continue to see very strong growth in PC Gaming, with Steam growing 50% in the last 12 months," said Gabe Newell, Valve's president. "With these announcements we hope that we are helping build on that momentum."

valve-announces-link-source-2-steamvr-more-gdc
Steam Machines, Windows PCs, Macs, and Linux PCs will be able to take advantage of a new product announced at GDC called Steam Link. Designed to extend your Steam experience to any room in the house, Steam Link allows you to stream all your Steam content from any PC or Steam Machine on the same home network. Supporting 1080p at 60Hz with low latency, Steam Link will be available this November for $49.99, and available with a Steam Controller for an additional $49.99 in the US (worldwide pricing to be released closer to launch).

Steam Machines from partners Alienware and Falcon Northwest are being shown, with Machines from a dozen other partners slated to release this November. Steam Machines will start at the same price point as game consoles, with higher performance. Customers interested in the best possible gaming experience can choose whichever components meet their needs. Epic will give a demonstration of the newly announced Unreal Tournament running on a 4K monitor driven by the Falcon Northwest Steam Machine. "We love this platform," said Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games. "Whether you're running incredibly detailed scenes at 4K or running 1080p at 120 FPS for an intense shooter experience, this brings world-class gaming and graphics to televisions with an open platform true to Valve's PC gaming roots."

Valve will show a virtual reality (VR) headset. Developer versions of the headset will be available this spring, and partner HTC will ship their Vive headset to consumers by the end of the year.

Two new technologies are part of the VR release - a room scale tracking system codenamed Lighthouse, and a VR input system. "In order to have a high quality VR experience, you need high resolution, high speed tracking," said Valve's Alan Yates. "Lighthouse gives us the ability to do this for an arbitrary number of targets at a low enough BOM cost that it can be incorporated into TVs, monitors, headsets, input devices, or mobile devices." Valve intends to make Lighthouse freely available to any hardware manufacturers interested in the technology.

"Now that we have Lighthouse, we have an important piece of the puzzle for tackling VR input devices," said Valve's Joe Ludwig. "The work on the Steam Controller gave us the base to build upon, so now we have touch and motion as integrated parts of the PC gaming experience."

"We've been working in VR for years and it was only until we used SteamVR's controllers and experienced the magic of absolute tracking that we were able to make the VR game we always wanted to make," said Alex Schwartz of Owlchemylabs.

VR demos being shown at GDC include work from Bossa Studios, Cloudhead Games, Dovetail Games, Fireproof Studios, Google, Owlchemylabs, Skillman & Hackett, Steel Wool Games, Vertigo Games, and Wevr.

Valve announced the Source 2 engine, the successor to the Source engine used in Valve's games since the launch of Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2. "The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform. With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favorite games," said Valve's Jay Stelly. "We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers. This combined with recent announcements by Epic and Unity will help continue the PCs dominance as the premiere content authoring platform."

Also as part of supporting PC gaming, Valve announced that it will be releasing a Vulkan-compatible version of the Source 2 engine. Vulkan is a cross-platform, cross-vendor 3D graphics API that allows game developers to get the most out of the latest graphics hardware, and ensures hardware developers that there is a consistent, low overhead method of taking advantage of products. Vulkan, previously called Next Generation OpenGL, is administered by the Khronos Group, along with other standards such as OpenCL, OpenGL, and WebGL.

GDC 2015 will mark the 13th anniversary of Valve's first public announcement of Steam, which has since become the leading platform for PC, Mac, and Linux games and software. In the last year, Steam realized the addition of many new services and features - including In-Home Streaming, Broadcasting, Music, and user-created stores - as it grew to over 125 million active accounts worldwide.

AMD Announces New LiquidVR Technology
AMD announced an initiative to deliver the best possible VR experience for developers and users through new AMD technologies and partnerships. The first output of AMD's initiative is LiquidVR, a set of innovative technologies focused on enabling exceptional VR content development for AMD hardware, improved comfort in VR applications by facilitating performance, and plug-and-play compatibility with VR headsets. The upcoming LiquidVR SDK makes a number of technologies available which help address obstacles in content, comfort and compatibility that together take the industry a major step closer to true, life-like presence across all VR games, applications, and experiences.

In virtual reality, the concept of 'presence' is described as the perception of being physically present in a simulated, nonphysical world in a way that fully immerses the user. A key obstacle to achieving presence is addressing motion-to-photon latency, the time between when a user moves their head and when his or her eye sees an updated image reflecting that new position. Minimizing motion-to-photon latency is critical to achieving both presence and comfort, two key elements of great VR.

Reducing latency involves the entire processing pipeline, from the GPU, to the application, to the display technology in the headset. AMD GPU software and hardware subsystems are a major part of improving that latency equation, and with LiquidVR, AMD is helping to solve the challenge by bringing smooth, liquid-like motion and responsiveness to developers and content creators for life-like presence in VR environments powered by AMD hardware.

"Achieving presence in a virtual world continues to be one of the most important elements to delivering amazing VR," said Brendan Iribe, CEO of Oculus. "We're excited to have AMD working with us on their part of the latency equation, introducing support for new features like asynchronous timewarp and late latching, and compatibility improvements that ensure that Oculus' users have a great experience on AMD hardware."

"Content, comfort, and compatibility are the cornerstones of our focus on VR at AMD and we're taking a big step in all three areas with the introduction of LiquidVR today. With LiquidVR we're collaborating with the ecosystem to unlock solutions to some of the toughest challenges in VR and giving the keys to developers of VR content so that they can bring exceptional new experiences to life," said Raja Koduri, corporate vice president, Visual Computing, AMD. "AMD will continue to collaborate closely with the VR ecosystem to deliver new LiquidVR technologies that aim to make the virtual world every bit as accurate as the real-world."

amd-announces-new-liquidvr-technology
Significant features of version 1.0 of the LiquidVR SDK include:

  • Async Shaders for smooth head-tracking enabling Hardware-Accelerated Time Warp, a technology that uses updated information on a user's head position after a frame has been rendered and then warps the image to reflect the new viewpoint just before sending it to a VR headset, effectively minimizing latency between when a user turns their head and what appears on screen.
  • Affinity Multi-GPU for scalable rendering, a technology that allows multiple GPUs to work together to improve frame rates in VR applications by allowing them to assign work to run on specific GPUs. Each GPU renders the viewpoint from one eye, and then composites the outputs into a single stereo 3D image. With this technology, multi-GPU configurations become ideal for high performance VR rendering, delivering high frame rates for a smoother experience.
  • Latest data latch for smooth head-tracking, a programming mechanism that helps get head tracking data from the head-mounted display to the GPU as quickly as possible by binding data as close to real-time as possible, practically eliminating any API overhead and removing latency.
  • Direct-to-display for intuitively attaching VR headsets, to deliver a seamless plug-and-play virtual reality experience from an AMD Radeon video card to a connected VR headset, while enabling features such as booting directly to the display or using extended display features within Windows.
AMD released the alpha version of LiquidVR SDK 1.0 to registered developers today. Learn more about LiquidVR here.
