apple-installs-watch-ad-permanent-icon-iphone-ios-update

You can't delete it, you can't remote it, it's an app that will stay on your homescreen for the foreseeable future.

AMD reportedly license Radeon graphics IP for MediaTek SoCs
According to the latest rumors, AMD is working with MediaTek to provide better mobile SoC graphics. AMD would see itself getting back into the ultra-low power graphics market in a very big way, while MediaTek will receive a huge injection of mobile graphics horsepower.

amd-reportedly-license-radeon-graphics-ip-mediatek-socs
Right now, it's a big war between Qualcomm, Samsung, Apple and MediaTek. MediaTek, until now, hasn't been able to keep up in the graphics department, but with AMD providing its Radeon technology to MediaTek, this could change quite quickly. We won't see the fruits of this labor for quite a while yet, but the results could definitely be interesting for the entire market.

The new 12-inch MBA features a thinner bezel around its display, with the keyboard reaching both edges of the base. Apple has used a new Taptic engine for the trackpad, something that provides touch feedback on the Apple Watch, is doing the same thing on the new MacBook Air - it simulates the sensation of clicking. You can push harder than a traditional tap, and it will act as a separate gesture, just like the new Watch.

Apple has removed most of the ports on the new MacBook Air, where we only have a 3.5mm headphone jack and a reversible USB-C connector. This port can charge the laptop, send video to an external display and of course, throw data around at USB 3.0 speeds. This port has allowed Apple to make its thinnest laptop yet, at just 13.1mm thick - 24% thinner than the already-thin 11-inch MacBook Air. It also weighs just 2 pounds.

Inside, the new MacBook Air is powered by Intel's Core M processor, and the promise of "all-day battery" with around 9 hours of web surfing, or up to 10 hours of HD video playback. The new MacBook will launch on April 10 starting at $1299, with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.

Driverless Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury spotted on in San Francisco
Someone has snapped pictures of the totally gorgeous Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion research vehicle, which is a driverless luxury vehicle. The company explains that it has "interdisciplinary team of experts from Mercedes-Benz has devised a future scenario that incorporates many different aspects of day-to-day mobility".

It looks like something out of a futuristic movie, but it is right-here-right-now technology. For those who don't know, the cabin of the car is absolutely beautiful, where it looks like it has been ripped right out of a science fiction movie or TV show. Mercedes-Benz explains the F 105 Luxury in Motion research car as "Sensual, flowing transitions and warm, organic materials such as open-pore walnut wood, which has been shaped to a three-dimensional veneer, and extremely soft ice-white nappa leather contrast with clearly-defined metal and glass surfaces with a cool and technical feel".

The Mercedes-Benz F 105 Luxury in Motion can travel up to 1100 kilometers (683.5 miles) to a single 'tank', which consists of an "electric hybrid system" that uses 200km on its battery, while 900km comes courtesy of the electricity of its fuel cell.

driverless-mercedes-benz-015-luxury-spotted-san-francisco
The company continues: "The transitions between organic, metal and synthetic materials have been designed using matrix graphics; and the flowing transitions deliver a new, unparalleled feeling of bounteous space. The light-coloured fine wood used for the floor, for example, flows almost imperceptibly into the cool Plexiglass of the side panels thanks to their unusual surface matrix. The transition between the vehicle floor and the door panels also echoes the outer body shape in a characterful way. The pivotal feature of the innovative interior concept is the variable seating system, with four rotating lounge chairs that allow a face-to-face seat configuration".

driverless-mercedes-benz-015-luxury-spotted-san-francisco
During my research into the driverless luxury car, one of the things that grabbed me is that travelling in this car would be perfect for those who, like me, need to work on-the-go. Mercedes-Benz explains that the interior is a "digital living space", continuing "One core theme of the innovative interior concept is a continuous exchange of information between vehicle, passengers and the outside world. Six displays are installed to this end all around, tastefully mounted in the instrument panel and the rear and side walls, making the interior of the F 015 Luxury in Motion a digital living space - a perfect symbiosis of the virtual and the real-world. Passengers are able to interact intuitively with the connected vehicle by means of gestures or by touching the high-resolution screens".

Facebook hiring 1200+ people ramping up to the Oculus Rift launch
It looks like Facebook is ramping up to the hopefully absolutely gigantic launch of the Oculus Rift CV1 (Consumer Version 1), with the social network reportedly going on a huge hiring spree. Facebook is hiring over 1200 new employees, which would see its global workforce increase by a large 14%.

facebook-hiring-1200-people-ramping-up-oculus-rift-launch
Facebook acquired Oculus VR this time last year for $2 billion and has since collaborated with the company on its VR HMDs, but until now it hasn't made Oculus change anything at its core. Even to this day, Oculus still operates virtually separately to Facebook, but enjoying Facebook's deep pockets for acquiring talent, companies and I'm sure, getting contracts signed for displays, and other parts that will go into the first consumer version of the Rift.

This huge hiring spree is great news for the Oculus Rift, as Facebook is looking to secure logistics managers that will work their magic on the global supply chain. Facebook's Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg, has said: "We are an ambitious company run by an ambitious CEO. Our users are growing and our business is growing and we want to support that".

The damage system in Star Citizen is fully next-gen
We're three months into 2015 so it's about time that we get a deeper look at Star Citizen, with Cloud Imperium Games showing off the super impressive damage system, which you can check out in the YouTube clip below.

As you can see from the minigun shooting the spaceship, little parts of the ship become damaged. Once a heavier, or stronger weapon is shooting or blasting at the ship, the hull is breached and you can see parts of the ship underneath. It was something I didn't expect, and I actually raised an eyebrow when watching it. Impressive stuff to see happen in a game made for the PC only.

Did you know that Steam chat now blocks most email addresses?
It's been causing some major confusion recently, did you know that Steam now blocks most major email address' in their chat program?

know-steam-blocks-chat-email-addresses-now
After talking to a friend of mine and asking for his email, I received a message from him saying "http://gmail.com." At first I thought he was trying to troll me so I went along with it, later on after some more frustration we realized that Steam chat was actually blocking what we were sending to each other.

As you can see above, on the left I sent him a few different test emails to check exactly what is blocked. His result is on the right, showing that all of these email address' have been effectively turned into URL's. For those who don't keep up with Steam updates and patch notes, this little bit of news may cause you some headaches in the future.

This change is likely due to a massive rise in scammers, often linking emails and various URL's to users in order to gain access to their accounts and expensive skins located within.

Another interesting note is that '@xtra.co.nz' was not blocked - showing that it may be some sort of '@domain.com' automatic blocker with a few extra common ones thrown in.

If you're really in need of sending your email over steam, try typing it as "name at domain dot com," for example, "johnsmith at gmail dot com."

Addonics Sapphire Blu-ray + eSATA + USB 3.0 Storage Enclosure Review
addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
The Addonics Sapphire platform is one of the most versatile we have seen come through the lab here at TweakTown. With is modular design, we have a number of products including both the Snap-In Array and Write Protect, and today we add yet another solution, the Sapphire Combo Blu-ray.

The Sapphire SBDRHEU Blu-ray Combo is yet another unique solution from Addonics enabling users to install both a 3.5" hard disk in addition to Blu-ray capabilities with the installed slimline optical drive. Additional drive support can be added to this solution with an optional 2.5" adapter, users can also add 256-bit hardware encryption if needed with the Cipher USB adapter. Specs for the Blu-ray drive include a 24x CD read speed, while DVDs are supported up to 8x for both single and double layer media, Blu-ray disc support allows for a 4.8x read speed. If you plan on writing media with this drive, you will find the maximum write speed with CD media tops out at 16x, while DVD single layer media is listed at 8x and double layer stops at 4x.

Connectivity options for this solution include eSATA and USB 3.0, while operating system support goes back to Windows XP through Windows 8 along with OS X and Linux kernel 2.4+. MSRP of the Addonics Sapphire Blu-ray combo is listed at $269.99 with a one-year warranty.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
Scope of delivery for the Sapphire Blu-ray includes the power adapter, data cables, and software for the Blu-ray drive.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
The front of the enclosure houses the Blu-ray drive at the top, while the 3.5" drive tray slides out underneath. To the right, we have a large LED to denote power, and to the left, we have two small LEDs for activity on each disk.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
Above, we have an image of our 4TB Western Digital Red Pro that we used for testing.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
As with most optical solutions purchase these days, the LG CT40N used in the Addonics comes with value added software to enrich your experience with the drive.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
Above, we have a list of what comes on the software disc. As you can see, we have a full suite from CyberLink including Media Espresso and PowerDVD 10.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
To start testing, we put a standard CD in the Blu-ray drive. Using the AIDA64 disk benchmark suite, we came up with a peak speed of 3.56 MB/s during linear read testing. Average read access came in at 131 ms, while maximum was much higher at 269 ms.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
Moving over to DVD performance, we found peak read speeds during linear testing to reach 9.49 MB/s, while average access hovered around 128 ms.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
Blu-ray, as expected, was a little quicker. Peak read speed came in at 20.4 MB/s with 201 ms average read access.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
Moving on from the optical disk testing, we ran our WD Red Pro HDD through testing and came up with 180 MB/s read with 176 MB/s write via USB 3.0.

addonics-sapphire-blu-ray-esata-usb-3-storage-enclosure-review
Of course, we didn't stop with testing this solution with a hard drive, we had to toss in our Intel 730 SSD and give it a run as well. This allows us to see the absolute peak of the enclosure to make sure there are no bottlenecks that would be experienced. Peak read speed came in at 269 MB/s, while write performance topped at 274 MB/s.

Like many of the Addonics solutions that come through the lab, the Sapphire Blu-ray certainly has its market. The build quality is superb with its alloy shell adding both durability and aesthetic appeal to the unit, while the plastics that accompany the unit seem to be up to the task as well. The mechanics that are present in both the hinges of the front tray feel very tight and at the same time are linked to allow easy ejection of any drive installed.

Performance of the solution was good, but could have been better. We were able to reach a peak of 269 MB/s read and 274 MB/s write with our Intel SSD, which does give the unit plenty of performance for it intended use. The Blu-ray drive was certainly a great addition to the overall package, but like most slim drives, it does get a little noisy while in operation.

Overall, with the value added software and the great build quality of the Sapphire Blu-ray combo, Addonics has a well-rounded product with plug and play capabilities fit for the average consumer.
