Patriots euphoric after Super Bowl despite 'Deflategate'

By
Steve Keating GLENDALE, Arizona (Reuters) - The New England Patriots
rallied to beat the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in what will go down as
one of the greatest Super Bowls of all-time but who the real winner is
could well be debated for decades to come. The buildup to the Super Bowl
had been dominated by a controversy over deflated footballs used by the
Patriots in a blowout win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC title
game that earned them a trip to Arizona. A whiff of scandal continued to
hang over Sunday's game even as the Vince Lombardi Trophy was hoisted
and confetti fell from the roof of the University of Phoenix Stadium
still trembling from New England's heart-stopping win. "We won that
(AFC) game 45-7, we won today 28-24," defended a defiant Patriots owner
Robert Kraft through the celebratory din.

Northeast U.S. braces for second major snowstorm in a week

By
Kevin Murphy KANSAS CITY (Reuters) - The northeastern United States
braced for the second major snow storm in a week on Monday after a huge
winter system dumped more than a foot (30 cm) of snow in the Chicago
area, closing schools from the Midwest to New England. Chicago Public
Schools, the country's third-largest public school system, along with
districts in Detroit, Boston and Providence, Rhode Island, canceled
classes for Monday as the National Weather Service issued storm warnings
and watches continued from western Iowa into upper New England. The
storm followed a blizzard last week that pummeled parts of the East
Coast, especially New England states, where up to three feet (90 cm) of
snow piled up.

Workers strike for second day at nine U.S. oil, chemical plants

By
Erwin Seba HOUSTON (Reuters) - Union workers were on strike for a
second day on Monday at nine U.S. refineries and chemical plants in an
attempt to force oil companies to sign a new national contract covering
laborers at 63 plants. Talks broke down against a backdrop of plunging
crude prices, which have fallen by half since June, prompting oil
companies to cut spending. The United Steelworkers union (USW) said
Royal Dutch Shell Plc, the lead industry negotiator, halted negotiations
early on Sunday after the union rejected a fifth proposal from the
company. Shell activated a strike contingency plan at its joint venture
refinery and chemical plant in Deer Park, Texas, to keep operating
normally.
