The White House said Mueller's family received a message from her captors containing information that was authenticated by U.S. intelligence analysts who verified her death. President Barack Obama also publicly acknowledged in an interview with the news website Buzzfeed that Mueller was among the hostages whom U.S. commandos were sent to rescue but failed to find in an operation he ordered last year. Outside the county courthouse in her hometown of Prescott, Arizona, two of Mueller's maternal aunts joined one of her childhood friends and a local pastor to deliver a tearful tribute to the Northern Arizona University grad.

Peter Liang, the officer, was patrolling with his partner in the Brooklyn housing project around 11:15 p.m. on Nov. 20 when his gun discharged a single bullet, killing Akai Gurley, 28, who was in the stairwell a flight below with his girlfriend. A spokeswoman for Kenneth Thompson, the Brooklyn district attorney who oversaw the grand jury's secret consideration of Liang's case, declined to comment. Jon Stewart leaving Comedy Central's 'The Daily Show'
By Eric Kelsey and Piya Sinha-Roy LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Jon Stewart, famed for his biting television satire of politicians and the media, will leave his job as host of Comedy Central's parody newscast "The Daily Show" later this year, he told his studio audience at the end of Tuesday night's episode. "It's been the honor of my professional life, and I thank you for watching it, for hate-watching it, whatever reason you are tuning in for." The announcement came after Comedy Central's other big name, former "Daily Show" contributor Stephen Colbert, ended his tenure as star of companion show "The Colbert Report" and left the network in December to succeed the retiring David Letterman as host of the "Late Show" on CBS. The New York-based "The Daily Show," which airs weeknights at 11 p.m. on the Viacom Inc-owned Comedy Central, is expected to continue, the network said, but a replacement for Stewart has yet to be named.
