Smart devices get smaller - are Smart Rings worth the time of day?
Smartphones to Smartwatches and now Smart Rings, when will the downsizing of technology stop? Is it really worth developing and working on a tiny ring that's only real purpose is to inform you of a missed call or text message?

Gizmodo had a chat to Kevin Bates, the man responsible for the Ö ring project. He gave a little insight into how crowd sourcing should work and exactly why he decided to undertake the project in the first place. Bates stated that "I made this just to see how small I could get the technology. I became inspired after seeing several crowdfunding campaigns for smart rings become hugely successful. I wanted to see if it was possible to develop a technology more advanced than what they had displayed in their promotional materials. In general, I think people should be more skeptical of hardware crowdfunding and demand to see more behind the scenes operation of the underlying technology."
This isn't the first project that Bates has been behind, working on tings such as this Tetris-bracelet and the incredible Tetris business card.
The same question still stands though - would you purchase a Smart Ring for everyday use and what features should it include, if so?

Possible revenge hacking by banks has led to FBI investigation
Cybercriminals are having a field day targeting US companies, financial institutions and government agencies, with numerous campaigns in recent years. However, some frustrated victims, instead of solely focusing on improving cybersecurity defense, are interested in trying to get vigilante justice on hackers.

"Right now the situation is that companies are on defense," said Bloomberg News reporter Michael Riley. "They have to try and keep hackers out of their networks, and the hackers only have to win once. They are incredibly frustrated, they are incredibly vulnerable, and they are looking for other options, and some of those options may be going after the hackers."

New release Samsung Smart TVs will include PlayStation Now
Usually seen as competitors, Samsung and Sony are now banding together for the benefit of the consumer - seeing Samsung's Smart TVs released in 2015 include PlayStation Now compatibility.

With the announcement of the partnership happening just before Christmas day, North American consumers will be among the first to receive this offer. As with other PlayStation Now compatible devices, the Samsung TVs will contain an app to connect to Sony's Gakai-powered games service, allowing customers to chose from a list of games that they can rent - picking as they wish and playing them almost instantly.
There's been no confirmation on development outside of the United States, either way this advancement is great news for the consumer as we've often seen Sony keep their programs and applications close to their chest - it's great to see them sharing and playing along.

Twitter implements their 'While You Were Away' feature
As Twitter displays user content as it happens, unlike Facebook, it's often quite easy to miss important Tweets and information unless you manually check each page of interest one by one.

Twitter already emails their users with some "top" tweets as reminders, this new feature is quite similar but is located within the app itself. If you're like me and only check Twitter on occasion, you'll end up missing most of the action - here's hoping this new feature will help keep the social media platform relevant to the casual user.
You can track various news accounts and user reports on this new feature though Twitter's handy real-time search. Looking into the public response, it's currently a varied mix of positive and negative results.
What are your thoughts on this implementation? Please feel free to leave a comment below or chat on our Facebook page.

Aussie Telecom Telstra adds 700Mhz LTE to more towns
Telstra have just rolled out their new 700Mhz "4GX" plans as 2015 sees the 700Mhz spectrum split between carriers Optus, TPG and Telstra now available for customers.

Using LTE-A to bond the new 700Mhz network to their existing 1800Mhz network, this technology should see an improvement in download speeds for user devices. Due to it being a 'shared mobile spectrum', customers shouldn't expect to always receive blisteringly-fast downloads, also seeing your device switch between the two available frequencies for the best coverage as it sees fit.
To see if your town is receiving this new advancement in technology, we'll provide the full list below.

The Xbook Duo guide fits the 360 and One into a single laptop
Backwards-compatibility - a statement that will bring pain to the face of most console gamers in this day and age. We saw this when only the first-release PlayStation 3 could play PlayStation 2 games and now we're aware that your brand-new Xbox One cannot run your favorite 360 disks. How can you try and combat this? How about shoving both consoles into one laptop-like shell? That'll do it.
Lacking in aesthetics but teaming with usability - all they need is someone to come along and spruce up the looks department, then they'll have a winner on their hands.
I personally won't be going to all of this effort as I can play old games on my computer just fine, but it's certainly a very smart project if you're looking for a little portability and to save some space.

Samsung plans to launch smart TVs this year on Tizen software platform
Korean electronics giant Samsung plans to release smart TVs powered by its Tizen operating system, as the company hopes for Tizen to evolve into the "OS of everything." The Tizen-powered smart TVs will be shown off during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next week, with worldwide availability and pricing details unveiled.

Samsung's efforts to expand Tizen to the smartphone market essentially failed, and it continues to rely on the Google Android operating system.
"The way society consumers entertainment... has evolved and now includes multiple devices and endless content from a variety of sources," Samsung said in a statement. "Recognizing this shift, Samsung's new platform was designed to deliver an integrated entertainment experience that is at once streamlined and powerful."

Portable chargers become more nifty - meet the Power Pen
If you've forgotten your charging cable on a long road-trip, holiday, work/school day or just about anywhere within 5 miles of your home - its likely your phone is going to run flat. Not only will you be unable to check your Facebook notifications, but you'll likely be lost thanks to the lack of GPS available and the general population not knowing how to use the sun for guidance.

It comes with the ability to charge any Android or iOS device with a microUSB or lighting port, marketed as handy for your smartphone, tablet or portable speakers and giving you a little wiggle room when things go pear shaped.
This isn't the only mini-charger on the market however. Although it doesn't include an internal battery, we've been shown an IndieGoGo bid for this tiny inCharge USB cable, set for attachment to your regular keyring.

Google hands out a large bug-finders fee of $50,000
A group of Polish security researchers have been rewarded with $50,000 from Google, thanks to their investigation and findings of 30 flaws within the Google App Engine developer platform - said to give hackers possible access beyond their own virtual machines.

While in operation, Google detected this research team conducting their tests and locked them out of their Google App Engine account - meaning no more progress could me made. After two weeks Google allowed this team to continue their research, complete their exploration of the GAE flaws and produce a report on the findings. There was one clear-cut rule however, the researchers must limit their work to the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) layer and steer clear from the next sandboxing layer.
This approved work was conducted between the 11th and 21st of December 2014, seeing Google acknowledge the findings - stating that the "security Explorations' report demonstrated that one of company's layers of defence had insufficient mitigations against a certain type of attacks and the auditing of the privileged Java classes were insufficient".
The $50,000 reward was paid under Google's vulnerability reward program (VRP) and this marks the highest cash reward given under this scheme - said to be separate to the Chrome VRP.

Robots could explore space station because of Wi-Fi access
The Wi-Fi networks aboard the International Space Station (ISS) could allow robots to autonomously roam the orbiting research lab. The SPHERES robots have been aboard the ISS since 2006, mainly used in a small cube location that is marked by ultrasound beacon limiters.

NASA and other participating space nations have shown increased interest in using robotics technology aboard the ISS - hoping to make the environmental safer to work in, while also helping astronauts with their workloads.

'The Interview' release expanding to more theaters, via cable service
Sony Pictures announced it is spreading release of "The Interview" to In Demand, a premium pay-per-view network that includes customers such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable, PlayStation Network, and other major carriers. Even with increased interest among Internet users to illegally pirate the movie, "The Interview" still appears to be racking up strong online rentals and purchases - which is why additional partners wanted to jump onboard.

Sony Pictures still hasn't outlined international release schedule for the film, but an announcement is expected to take place sometime in the near future.

Apple faces lawsuit over massive storage space required by iOS 8
A class-action lawsuit has been filed by two Florida residents, accusing Apple of deceiving its customers regarding storage space required for the iOS 8 operating system. The company didn't inform customers that 23 percent of storage space on iPhone smartphones and iPad tablets would be used by iOS 8 alone, which many users have found to be frustrating.

The iPhone 5s has 18.1 percent storage capacity unavailable to users after installation, 18.8 percent for the iPhone 6, and 20.6 percent unavailable for the iPhone 6 Plus.
The complaint reads: "Apple's misrepresentations and omissions are deceptive and misleading because they omit material facts that an average consumer would consider in deciding whether to purchase its products. Rather ironically, Apple touts iOS 8 as 'The biggest iOS release ever.' Of course, Apple is not referring to the literal size of iOS 8, which appears to be entirely undisclosed in its voluminous marketing materials extolling the purported virtues of iOS 8."

LG To Introduce World's First 21:9 Gaming Monitor With AMD FreeSync At CES 2015
LG Electronics (LG) announced plans to introduce the world's first 21:9 "UltraWide" gaming monitor compatible with AMD FreeSync technology for fluid motion during fast gameplay.

21:9 UltraWide Gaming Monitor with AMD FreeSync Technology
LG's UltraWide Gaming Monitor (34UM67) is the company's first 21:9 monitor specifically developed for graphics-intensive gaming. AMD's FreeSync technology eliminates the screen tearing that occurs when the monitor and video card are out of sync. Furthermore FreeSync technology guarantees the smoothest and most seamless gaming experience, generating fluid motion without any loss of frame rate.
"AMD FreeSync technology is an innovative monitor technology, based on free and open industry standards, to eliminate the tearing and stuttering that has plagued PC gaming for 30 years," said Roy Taylor, corporate vice president of ISV/IHV Partner Group, AMD. "We are pleased that LG Electronics stands with us with truly exciting AMD FreeSync-ready displays like the LG UltraWide Gaming Monitor."
The 34UM67 also has an exceptional UltraWide field of view (FOV), allowing gamers to gain the upper hand by revealing hidden spaces that were invisible on regular 16:9 monitors. The monitor's Black Stabilizer illuminates dark scenes and helps to clearly define the deep black areas where objects and enemies could be hidden. The Dynamic Action Sync mode minimizes input lag, enhancing users' real-time gaming experience. Many popular games such as Battlefield 4, World of Warcraft and ArcheAge currently support 21:9 resolution with more games expected to support this resolution in the future.
World's First Curved 34-inch 21:9 Monitor with Extensive Screen
LG's curved 34-inch UltraWide monitor (34UC97) in Quad HD resolution (3440 x 1440) makes maximum use of its wide screen real estate. It allows creative professionals, such as graphic designers or photographers, to look at more images as thumbnails and media creators to see longer video image sequences or graphical representations of sound. The monitor is compatible with Thunderbolt 2, which allows for Mac users to take advantage of its high-speed bulk data transfers. And for gamers, the curved display provides a more immersive experience.
The monitor's 178-degree viewing angle of the In-Plane Switching (IPS) display recreates colors across over 99 percent of the sRGB color space, so there is no color distortion at any angle. The monitor's color accuracy, viewing angle and sRGB color space have been certified by TUV Rheinland and Intertek and also validated by UL.
21:9 Curved UltraWide Multi-Display for Enhanced Productivity
The 21:9 Curved UltraWide Multi-Display (34UC87M) provides various multiple-display set-up options, raising productivity levels for financial professionals, such as stock traders who need to keep track of large amounts of data simultaneously. This monitor can be used as a trading workstation or a large dashboard to display charts, quotes or pending orders on each screen, allowing the user to explore a wider range of opportunities.

LG will also showcase the Digital Cinema 4K Monitor (Model 31MU97) featuring 4K resolution (4096 x 2160), with more pixels than standard Ultra HD resolution (3840 x 2160). The 31MU97 shows 4K content as it was meant to be seen with native resolution and it is also well suited for handling Digital Intermediate (DI) processes. With over 99.5 percent Adobe Color Space, it is the ideal monitor for accurate color management.
"LG's premium 21:9 UltraWide monitors are designed with the unique needs of consumers in mind," said In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV and monitor division at the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "The industry has come a long way from the days when one display design was thought to be suitable for all users. With the amount of time we spend in front of monitors, these products are no longer one size fits all."
Visitors are encouraged to stop by LG's booth at CES 2015 (Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall #8204) from Jan. 6-9 to see LG's innovative monitor lineup in person.

UK - Boxing Day retail proves to be 'damp squib' with 17% drop in online purchases
Boxing Day has lost its positioning as the premier shopping date of the Christmas season with Black Friday now the key date in the sales and bargain-hunting calendar.

Consumers got online in search of a bargain on Boxing Day at about twice the rate that they did throughout Christmas Eve and made five times as many purchases in the process.
However, the country's biggest online retailers saw their conversion rates - the percentage of online shoppers that actually made a purchase from a website - drop from a total of 3% on Boxing Day in 2013 to 2.5% in 2014.
Meanwhile, the conversion rate on Black Friday - the 28th November, reached 2.7% as British consumers went looking for deals. The number of people spending money online was also higher than on Boxing Day - almost 79% more internet shoppers bought something on an ecommerce website on Black Friday than on the 26th December.
As a result many retailers such as Currys are already preparing for Black Friday next year and using their websites to urge customers to mark out the 27th November 2015 in their diaries.
Though Boxing Day lost out to Black Friday in terms of online purchases, UK shoppers still flocked to the internet in massive numbers looking for deals once Christmas was done. Qubit's clients - a list that includes Topshop owner Arcadia Group, DFS and Shop Direct Group - saw a total of 17,657,174 online visitors throughout the day with just under half a million people making 824,152 individual purchases.

Apple Expected to Reverse iPad Misfortunes in 2015; 16% YoY Growth for Tablet OEMs, Says ABI Research
According to the latest forecasts from market intelligence firm ABI Research, tablet growth is expected to resume and continue over the next 5 years with a forecast of nearly 290 million tablet shipments in 2019. As the calendar year comes to a close, many of the world's tablet vendors are looking forward to opportunities in 2015 and are hoping to avoid a repeat of lackluster 2014 results. Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, and Google are expected to show year-over-year declines in branded tablet unit volume, while Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, Microsoft, and Samsung should end higher in calendar year 2014.

Comparing tablet operating systems, Android continues to gain share with an expected 54% of branded tablets including the Google OS in 2014 while iOS falls to 41% and Windows 8 trails at 5% of shipments.
The tablet outlook for 2015 paints a better picture for OEMs. There are several factors that will lead worldwide branded shipments to grow 16% year-over-year to 194 million:
- Broader tablet adoption by businesses for the "clipboard workforce"
- Clearer, tiered product portfolios from leading OEMs
- Benefits-oriented marketing messaging by vendors to reach laggard adopters in the most mature market economies

Tablets and Ultrabooks Become 30% More Affordable in Emerging Markets, Says ABI Research
The Average Selling Price (ASP) of Ultrabooks and tablets declined by 7.8% in 2014, as the market matured and commoditized, allowing these devices to become more affordable in all markets. According to market intelligence firm ABI Research, the average weeks of household income needed to buy a tablet or Ultrabook both declined by approximately 30% YoY; making these devices more affordable to a wider range of consumers.

The affordability of personal technology devices is strongest in many mature markets, such as the United States, Japan, and Germany, primarily due to the higher household income. However, ABI Research highlights that Chile experienced the largest decline in ASP, 56% for both tablets and Ultrabooks combined; tablets experienced the largest decline at 70.3%, due to the increase in selection and competition caused by lower-end devices entering the market between 2013 and 2014. In contrast, India experienced the largest increase in ASP between 2013 and 2014, at an average of 22% for both tablets and Ultrabooks; tablets alone experienced an increase of 34.5%, due to the surge of an e-commerce presence, Apple products, and mid-tiered devices.
As shown in Chart 1, the most noticeable change in affordability for weeks to buy for Ultrabooks and tablets occurred in Indonesia. In 2013, ABI Research's data shows that 11 weeks of income were needed to purchase an Ultrabook and nearly four weeks for tablets. In 2014, the weeks of income needed to purchase an Ultrabook declined by 47%, dropping to 5.9 weeks, and for tablets weeks of income declined by 60%, dropping to 1.5 weeks. "Partly due to the increase in models and price points in e-commerce, Indonesia, like many other developing markets, is a good example of the commoditizing of these devices," continues Van Vactor. "Market maturation will continue this effect through the next year, especially as competition increases and affordability continues to prosper as a result." Over the next year, competition will continue to surge and ASPs will continue to decline.
These findings are part of ABI Research's Media Tablets, Ultrabooks and eReaders Market Research (https://www.abiresearch.com/market-research/service/media-tablets-netbooks-ereaders/).
