Neil Youngâs Pono Player is Launching on January 12
Neil Young, who has for years complained about how MP3 audio lacks authentic quality due to compression, has revealed at the International Consumer Electronics Show that his high-quality music player, the Pono Player, will be launching this Monday. The player is being marketed towards individuals who truly appreciate audio files that feature no compression, allowing music to be heard with every intended detail. Although a dedicated music player is likely to be difficult to sell in a market so convoluted by music streaming services, Neil Young firmly believes that a market does exist for the Pono Player, which is meant to play songs from the recently launched Pono music store which sells high-quality audio files.
The Pono Player will be available in just 80 retail locations across the United States, including Fry's Electronics, and will cost consumers $399.

AT&T Introduces Shareable Rollover Data
AT&T has revealed that it is bringing back its popular rollover concept in the form of Rollover Data. The newly announced feature, which will be enabled automatically starting on January 25, 2015 at no cost to customers, is only available to those subscribed to an AT&T Mobile Share Value plan. Customers that subscribe a Mobile Share Value plan are able to rollover unused data from one billing cycle into the next. Rollover Data is able to benefit all devices that are a part of the same Mobile Share Value plan, and the feature itself can be easily tracked through the myAT&T mobile application or through the AT&T website. According to Glenn Lurie, the President and CEO of AT&T Mobility, “Rollover Data is an added benefit of being an AT&T Mobile Share Value customer and it’s just another way that we’re saying thanks to our more than 50 million plus Mobile Share Value subscribers.”
While Rollover Data is certainly exciting for AT&T Mobile Share Value customers, it is worth noting that unused Rollover Data does not carry over.

System Requirements for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Detailed
CD Projekt's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may have been delayed into May, but it is only to give the team more time to get any bugs squashed and make sure the game is as good as possible. Judging by all the gameplay footage and trailers released, CDP is making good on that promise. One thing that has been missing is what exactly we'll need to run The Witcher 3. Luckily we now have that information, and it isn't as severe as you may think to get it up and running.
Minimum System Requirements:
Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz
AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
NVIDIA GPU GeForce GTX 660
AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870
RAM 6GB
OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
DirectX 11
HDD Space 40 GB
Recommended System Requirements:
Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3,4 GHz
AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
NVIDIA GPU GeForce GTX 770
AMD GPU Radeon R9 290
RAM 8GB
OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
DirectX 11
HDD Space 40 GB
The hard drive size is a little high, but it is nice to see the game be just for DirectX 11 and nothing lower. Most people should be able to run The Witcher 3 right away, but if you do need an upgrade, you have until May 19 to get it squared away.

Intel Unveils the Compute Stick, Powered by an Atom Quad-core CPU
Devices that plug into a TV are becoming more and more popular, with items like the Google Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV Stick leading the way. At CES, Intel showed off its version of a TV stick, but it is a little different than the Google and Amazon offerings. The size is still the same as those (think a large stick of gum), but the Intel Compute Stick is effectively a computer that plugs into your TV's HDMI port. One version runs Windows 8.1 and another runs Linux, with both being powered by a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F Bay Trail processor. Down the road, newer processors like the Intel Broadwell Core M series could find their way into the Compute Stick.
The Windows 8.1 version comes with 32GB of storage and 2GB of RAM, while the Linux versions just has 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM because of the OS' smaller operating footprint. A microSD slot can expand the storage on either one, so you aren't limited to the stock amount. It connects to the TV via an HDMI 1.4a port, can stream media over 802.11b/g/n WiFi or Bluetooth 4.0, and includes both a full-size and micro USB port for even further connectivity. The Compute Stick does require a micro USB cable for charging, since it can't run entirely off the HDMI port alone.
Intel's Compute Stick will arrive this March, with the Windows 8.1 version priced at $149 and the Linux at $89.

Counting Atoms for Quantum Networks
In the future, potentially quite far into the future, quantum technologies may come to dominate, much like how electronics are now. Before that can happen though, many things have to be discovered, such as ways of manipulating and counting atoms. Researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute have recently found a way to do just that, without scattering the atoms being worked on.
Normally counting atoms would require shooting them with light the atoms will absorb, and seeing how the photons than scatter. This also results in the atoms being kicked out and scattered. The new method however only kicks out 14% of the atoms, which is quite an improvement. It works by trapping the atoms along an ultra-thin glass fiber by chilling them to near absolute zero. Two laser beams of different frequencies are then shot through the fiber. Because the fiber is thinner than the wavelength of the light, they also travel along the fiber's surface, allowing for strong interactions with the trapped atoms. If those atoms were not present, the beams would continue on, quite normally, but with the atoms there, the speeds of the two beams are affected, and measuring the difference between the speeds allows the atoms to be counted.
The researchers found that this method has very impressive accuracy, with an uncertainty of eight atoms, when 2500 are being held on the fiber. The method's resolution is limited by the natural quantum noise of the light, which is actually useful as it could allow for entangled states that could be used in quantum computer networks.

Acer Announces Two New 27-Inch Monitors, Including One with G-SYNC
Over the weekend, Acer announced two new 27-inch monitors that seem pretty similar at first glance, but are quite different when you get down to it. The Acer XB270HU and XG270HU both feature 27" screens, a 2560x1440 resolution, and 144Hz refresh rate, but that's about where the similarities end. The XB270HU features an IPS panel and NVIDIA G-Sync, which makes it one of the only IPS monitors with G-SYNC. That piece of NVIDIA tech allows for frame rates to sync with the monitor's refresh rate to present far smoother gameplay than what was possible before, so even a frame rate in the 30s will look buttery smooth. And because the XB270HU supports a 144Hz refresh rate, gamers capable of hitting that should be in for quite a treat. No connections were mentioned for the XB270HU, but most likely it will have DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI, and DVI; just don't hold me to that.
The XG270HU lacks G-SYNC and is most likely a TN panel, but it also has a world's first claim: an edge-to-edge display. This should be welcome news for anyone wanting to run multiple monitors in a row, as the XG270HU's frameless design should be ideal for that setup. It also has an HDMI 2.0 port, which supports high refresh rates and enables 4K gaming at 60Hz. There's also DVI and DisplayPort 1.2 on the XG270HU, so pretty much everyone should find a compatible connector with their video card.
Sadly we'll have to wait until March to get our hands on either (or both of) the Acer XB270HU and XG270HU. We also don't know the exact price for each one, but expect that information before long.
