Microsoft says Windows 10 will run on 'billions of devices'
Microsoft has said that it wants to see its next generation desktop operating system, Windows 10, on "billions of devices". Kevin Turner, the Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft said: "Our goal is to have Windows 10 run across billions of devices" at the Credit Suisse 18th Annual Technology Conference.

TweakTown image microsoft_says_windows_10_will_run_on_billions_of_devices
He continued: "Being able to tap into that entire ecosystem from Internet-of-Things all the way up, as I said, to the TV, is an important element and an important opportunity for us". With Microsoft designing Windows 10 from the ground up to be run on countless devices, and not just personal computers, Microsoft could truly see Windows 10 on "billions of devices".

Turner wasn't finished, where he added: "The thing that I want to tell you about Windows 10 is that it is very unique from any operating system we have ever built and any operating system that exists today. We have actually taken those four OSes ... and built that single kernel across all of those entities. One experience on every device for everything in your life is the promise that we are delivering on Windows 10. It is going to be a very good opportunity for us to reinvigorate the entire Windows ecosystem around that".

Microsoft hopes to finally see its Xbox One overtake the PlayStation 4
The Sony PlayStation 4 has largely dominated the Microsoft Xbox One throughout 2014, but a recent price cut - and unbundling the Xbox One from the Kinect - has helped generate more interest in the Xbox One. The price cut helped spur sales for the Xbox One, with Microsoft trying to build on a strong end of 2014 leading into the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early 2015.

TweakTown image microsoft_hopes_to_finally_see_its_xbox_one_overtake_the_playstation_4
The Xbox One snatched up 53 percent of console sales on Black Friday, while the PS4 trailed with 31 percent - and both companies likely saw strong sales on Cyber Monday - as sales continue leading up to Christmas.

Microsoft added this tidbit: "Since the new Xbox One offering launched on June 9, we've seen sales of Xbox One more than double in the U.S., compared to sales in May."

Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango are being remastered for PS4, PC
Well, I woke up to some good news this morning, with the PlayStation Experience event that is wrapping up by Sony still spilling out some truly good news for gamers.

Some of LucasArts most memorable, and best games are being remastered by Double Fine. Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango will be remastered, with Day of the Tentacle: Special Edition coming out for the PlayStation 4, PC, Linux and PlayStation Vita - but with no release date, which makes me sad.

The remastered version of Grim Fandango on the other hand, will be released on January 27, 2015 for all four of the aforementioned platforms.

Noe Iniguez, 36, recently had the honor of being the first person convicted and sentenced under the California new "revenge porn" law. Found guilty of two restraining order violations and one state revenge porn statute, Iniguez was sentenced to one year in jail and 36 months of probation - he will also have to attend domestic violence classes.

Iniguez posted a topless picture of his ex-girlfriend on her employer's website, encouraging the company to terminate her employment, while also calling her a "drunk" and "slut."

"California's new revenge porn law gives prosecutors a valuable tool to protect victims whose lives and reputations have been upended by a person they once trusted," said Mike Feuer, Los Angeles City Attorney, in a press statement. "This conviction sends a strong message that this type of malicious behavior will not be tolerated."

Survey: Most US companies suffering cyberattacks, struggling along
Eighty-two percent of US companies suffered at least one cyberattack in the past 12 months, with 46 percent reporting at least three or more, according to a Malwarebytes report that Lawless Research conducted. Mobile security issues garner a lot of attention, but exploitable browser vulnerabilities provide the most pressing concern at the moment.

TweakTown image survey_most_us_companies_suffering_cyberattacks_struggling_along
Trying to defend against these malicious attacks has allowed the cybersecurity industry to grow at a rapid pace - and as software and hardware security both improve - retailers, financial institutions, and governments remain concerned of looming attacks.

There has been a rise in ransomware attacks, survey respondents noted, and infection levels have been relatively low - but cause great concern for executives.

Intel spending billions to boost progress in mobile tech development
Intel continues to invest billions of dollars into mobile hardware development, with a specific focus on smartphones and tablets. ARM is enjoying success in mobile as the US and global markets are saturated with countless products - and while Intel is essentially late to the game - hopes to spend some money and try to get back into the competition.

TweakTown image intel_spending_billions_to_boost_progress_in_mobile_tech_development
The company also has diversified its efforts in the mobile hardware market, creating business relationships with Chinese companies to manufacture new CPUs for mobile products. Intel is investing $1.6 billion spread over the next 15 years for a new manufacturing facility in China that will focus on mobile chip production.

Intel also hopes that its facility can be used by third-parties, such as Apple: "It makes sense because Intel likes to make manufacturing facilities in technically sophisticated markets, which China is," noted Dean McCarron, Mercury Research principal analyst. "If someone like Apple were to approach Intel and say we want this custom phone part, it's obvious Intel will build it."

Congressman Steve Stockman says bitcoin regulation talk is too hasty
US Congressman Steve Stockman (R-TX) recently introduced the H.R. 5777 "Cryptocurrency Protocol Protection and Moratorium Act," which would effectively treat bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies as real currency. The moratorium would also prevent state and federal bitcoin regulation for five years - Stockman hopes investors and support for bitcoin will increase if lawmakers are unable to keep the government from interfering on a frequent basis.

TweakTown image congressman_steve_stockman_says_bitcoin_regulation_talk_is_too_hasty
Here is what Congressman Stockman recently said: "It's too early to be talking about that. Just imagine if Steve Jobs had to deal with this, or anybody starting an Internet company having to hop through the obstacles they're putting up."

US lawmakers are paying more attention to cryptocurrencies, but might be too eager to create new legislations - without thinking of long-term consequences - especially if the industry cannot flourish naturally.

Apple must continue to improve cybersecurity as attacks increase
Several high-profile cyberattacks launched against Apple have revealed OS X and iOS aren't as secure anymore, with criminals trying to compromise both operating systems. Enterprise workers are at risk because of Apple taking a "whack-a-mole" approach to security, which is a major threat with sophisticated spear-phishing attacks.

TweakTown image apple_must_continue_to_improve_cybersecurity_as_attacks_increase
"Apple's responses to the WireLurker and Masque Attack operations illustrate that iOS is entering the 'whack-a-mole' era of malware defense, similar to that experienced during the last decade with PCs," said Dave Jevans, Marble Security founder and CTO. "Being proactive rather than reactive is essential in preventing these ioS vulnerabilities and exploits from affecting enterprise networks, and implementing mobile device security solutions is a huge step in achieving this."

Sophisticated cyberattacks target most major technology companies, but Apple previously was left relatively unscathed from most malicious code. However, cybercriminals want to find strategies to steal information and conduct data breaches, with a specific focus on compromising iPhones and iPads in the workplace.

Tesoro Excalibur Illuminated Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review

Introduction, Specifications and Pricing

TweakTown image tesoro_excalibur_illuminated_mechanical_gaming_keyboard_review
If this were six months ago, then the Tesoro company would still have been a company we knew very little about, but in that time, they have been very forthcoming in delivering samples of their products for us to review. As a result, we have now developed sort of a profile of what we expect to see in their products, and more specifically, their keyboards.

When we got our hands-on the Lobera, we saw that Tesoro wasn't afraid to attempt shaping the frame away from the typical rectangle. While they used odd patterns and design elements, at the Lobera's base there were great components and a high level of attention to detail. When it came to the Tizona, we found a more typical design and layout, but we still found the same level of components, and the great attention to the small details, even if most users will never see them.

So, as we now get to take a look at our third mechanical keyboard from Tesoro, we do have some pretty high expectations of what this product should deliver. First, we expect Kailh switches, as the previous two were based upon them. We also expect that when it comes down to it, everything about this keyboard will be designed with a purpose, and there will be less thrills and frills that the more oddly shaped keyboards would offer. This time, because the design is more straightforward, we don't expect much in coatings or design elements with altered textures. Most of all, we expect to see an illuminated keyboard that does very well on its own, and from what we have seen of their configuration software, this should be a great solution for gamers and typists alike.

If you haven't yet figured it out, today we will be looking at Tesoro's latest, the Excalibur Illuminated mechanical keyboard. With a basic rectangular design, and touches that make this keyboard distinctly Tesoro, we feel that sometimes simplicity is best. As long as Tesoro does not fail to meet our expectations and stay the course we have seen them following with previous models, we feel the Tesoro Excalibur may very well be the keyboard to get, especially if you are looking for the features we have seen before, just in a more sleek and elegant packaging. If none of the above has raised your pulse thus far, then the amazing price of the Excalibur just might.

When it comes to provided specifications, we get very little from Tesoro, but this compact list pretty much sums it all up. Under the rendering of the front profile of the Excalibur, we see the keyboard is 450mm in width, 145mm in length/depth, and it stands 24mm tall with the feet tucked into the bottom of the keyboard. As for the rest of the construction, it is comprised of a two-piece plastic frame that surrounds the steel plate and PCB to give the keyboard its structure, and hopefully eliminate potential flex and twist. The switches in this model are blue backlit Kailh switches, and in our case, we have blue Kailh switches. The last thing we have to consider are the cylindrical key caps that are molded in white, and then painted with the iconography left blank for the light to shine through.

TweakTown image tesoro_excalibur_illuminated_mechanical_gaming_keyboard_review
The smaller print at the bottom shows us that this keyboard offers 512KB of onboard memory for profile and Macro storage. There are five total profiles, the Macros can be tied to any key, and with software involved, keys can also be disabled or reassigned. There are four levels of illumination, and that covers three levels of full illumination (one is a breathing mode), and one level where only twenty specific keys illuminate. Continuing on, we see the fifty-million click lifespan of the Kailh switches, and we find that there are no multimedia switches included. The Excalibur connects via USB on the end of a 1.55 meter cable, and there is no USB hub, or extra audio ports in this design.

Price tags of $100 or more tend to keep most of the potential clientele away from mechanical keyboards. Tesoro, like a few other companies, has seen the light, and are taking on the more budget friendly end of the market. This means that even while you get a sleek product, very comprehensive software, and the ability to store and go with profiles and Macros, you don't have to shell out $100 or more to get it. With that angle of attack, the $69.99 pricing we are seeing most everywhere just got even more reasonable. Tesoro may not have been the first keyboard to release at this price, but they are giving it all they have got to deliver a budget friendly keyboard that offers slightly more than the competition.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Xbox One Game Review
TweakTown image dragon_age_inquisition_xbox_one_game_review
Bioware has had an interesting time of it lately. Mass Effect 3 ended off (for the moment) one of their best video game series yet, but had major criticism around its ending, so much so Bioware ended up rewriting it. Before that, Dragon Age 2 was taken to the cleaners by many gamers for being too different to the original, and it's been a little while since we've heard from the Bioware crew. The third Dragon Age game, Inquisition, has attempted to take what people liked about the original game, along with some of the mechanics from the second, meld them together, and come up with a game that every Dragon Age fan will love. You know what, Bioware may have just pulled it off. Dragon Age Inquisition is a spectacular game that RPG fans will play for months.

The game begins with the peace between the Magi and Templar factions being shattered by a large explosion which takes out members of the chantry who had brokered the peace deal. The land of Thedas is again on the verge of civil war with those who seek revenge and / or power able to now execute their plans. You play a Herald, a chosen character who builds a team of warriors known as the 'Inquisition'. Who you add to your party is entirely up to you and decisions you make directly affect this world as you play through the game with a number of crucial decision points present throughout.

TweakTown image dragon_age_inquisition_xbox_one_game_review
However, it's not just your decisions in this game that can determine the fate of this world. As part of the game, Bioware launched the Dragon Age Keep. This allows you to go to the Dragon Age site and enter the details from the previous games specific to your playthroughs and will directly affect how the world is when the game begins. The PC version can import the saves, however, the Xbox One version can download the data from the keep once you have set up your game in the Keep.

When it comes to the gameplay as per most Bioware games, there are primarily three sections; combat, narrative, and overall universe management. This is very much a game that mixes the combat up with some interesting narrative sections to play through. For example, without spoiling too much, there is a section where you need to perform a dance to impress a royal family. At times, when you think the combat is dragging on a bit, Bioware mixes it up with something new. Along with this, there is also a War Council that you need to convince to explore new areas, take on new missions, and find new mission objectives. To do this, you gain power by completing side quests or performing particularly well in conversation with key NPCs.

TweakTown image dragon_age_inquisition_xbox_one_game_review
This is in some way where a few players will find some frustration with the game. Side quests are not really optional and are more mandatory to a degree. To gain power, you complete side quests and some of these, especially in the opening areas, are very MMO like. One such example is having to kill ten rams and return their skins. However, the rest of the game (and side quests further into the main structure) makes playing through these worth it. It is a real shame that some of the opening quests leave a bitter taste because the rest of the game is almost perfectly structured.

The combat itself can be played in two modes; either real-time or in a more tactical view. Which mode you take on is of course personal preference, but there are times in the game where the challenge is such that the tactical view becomes a must. In the tactical view, you can give commands to your non-player controlled characters (you can switch to these characters whilst the gameplay is frozen) that can lead to more co-ordinated attacks.

In the real-time mode, you can also do this, but it's a bit more frantic with less time to think. This is one area where Bioware has managed to meld the best of each of the previous games into something that should please everyone. One thing which really frustrated us and in some ways made no sense was the inability to get to the manage character screen during combat to change weapons - a small thing, but frustrating nonetheless.

The world the game is set in is massive. There are numerous areas to explore and more are found when performing tasks with the War Council. The opening area, the Hinterlands, has enough content for around ten hours of gameplay and that represents only a small area of the game. You will visit huge castles, forests, snow covered areas, and others before the epic story of the game wraps up. This is a game that if you do not rush, will take you around fifty to sixty hours to complete. And aside from the opening section if you get bored in one area, there will generally be many others to explore, gaining power and building the prestige of the Inquisition.

TweakTown image dragon_age_inquisition_xbox_one_game_review
Visually, the game is stunning to say the least and really does show the jump between the old generation of consoles and what we have now. The combat is fluid and despite the huge open world's present, the Xbox One console manages to keep the frame rate quite solid throughout. At the start of the game, you can customize your character to a significant level, leading to everyone having a unique character. In an interesting move, when you move into a cut scene wearing a helmet, the helmet is removed showing the characters face. Small tweaks like this really bring home how much effort and care Bioware has put into this game.

The game also features multiplayer, and as you would expect, it's quite a bit different to the single player mode. Played with friends via co-op, the multiplayer mode puts a number of limitations on you as a character to ensure that you need to work together as a team for success. For example, you will have limited access to weapons and potions, and along with this, you can only succumb to the enemy three times before its game over - in single player, other NPC characters can revive you.

TweakTown image dragon_age_inquisition_xbox_one_game_review
There is zero doubt that Dragon Age: Inquisition is one of the best games of 2014, and one that if you have any inkling of a liking for RPGs, you should pick it up. Dragon Age 2 may have soured the series, but Bioware went back, licked their wounds, and crafted one of the best games of the year. Your adventure awaits, Herald.
