G-Sync monitors flicker in some games—and here's why
Displays equipped with Nvidia's G-Sync variable-refresh tech are pretty great. But they're not perfect: some users have been reporting slight flickering in some games.
The guys at PC Perspective did a little sleuthing this week, and they've both confirmed the problem and identified its cause . Turns out the issue has to do with the way G-Sync handles "stalls" in game animation—that ...

Two Batman games join the Grid catalog
Nvidia is making good on its promise to bolster the Grid catalog with new games every week. This week's additions are Batman: Arkham Origins, the prequel to Rocksteady's excellent Arkham Asylum, and LEGO Batman: The Video Game, a more kid-friendly take on the Dark Knight.
By my count, that brings the number of games available through Nvidia's streaming service to ...

Epic sends out first invites for Fortnite alpha
If Fortnite has fallen off your radar, we don't blame you. The PC-exclusive, Minecraft-inspired sandbox game hasn't made many headlines since its unveiling more than two years ago. Development is progressing, though, and Epic says it's just sent out the first batch of invites for the Fortnite alpha.
The first phase of alpha testing, which Epic calls "Online Test No. 1," is scheduled to run from tomorrow until December 19. Epic will use this phase to "verify at a larger scale that the basic systems in the game function properly, from sign-ups and patching, ...

Asus shrinks the GeForce GTX 970 for Mini-ITX
Asus has developed a bite-sized version of the GeForce GTX 970. The appropriately named GTX 970 DC Mini is 6.7" long, matching the length of the Mini-ITX form factor exactly.
Like the shorty 970 Gigabyte introduced in October, Asus' hot hatch is turbo-charged beyond stock frequencies. The graphics chip has 1088MHz base and 1228MHz boost clocks, up from 1076/1216 ...

Thanksgiving offers a perfect chance to crack open a busted iPad Air
Phew. I needed that break. I was able to take off the latter half of last week and this past weekend to spend some time with my family, and it was refreshing to get away. Thanks to Geoff and Cyril, with their alternative Canadian Thanksgiving ways, for keeping the site going.
Because I'm partially crazy, I couldn't just relax during my time away, of course. I took it upon myself to attempt a computer hardware repair. And since doing things that are, you know, sensible isn't a requirement for the halfway insane, I decided to ...

Deal of the week: Cyber Monday edition
For those who didn't get all their shopping done over last week's Black Friday bonanza, Cyber Monday has arrived with a new batch of discounted PC hardware. Well, to be honest, most of deals are recycled Black Friday offers. But there's still lots of good stuff to be had.
There are, of course, loads of other deals out there today. These are the ones that stood out to me—and weren't attached to mail-in rebates. Be sure to ...

Intel is trying to carve itself a piece of the wearables market, and it may get a high-profile design win next year. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google has tapped Intel to power the second-gen Google Glass.

Laptops are expected to grow in that time period.

Friday night topic: What are you thankful for?
Thanksgiving was yesterday (or last month, if you live north of the border), but in theory, there's nothing stopping any of us from being thankful year round. And I expect most of us have a lot to be thankful for—whether it's big life-changing things or little everyday things, and whether our thankfulness is religiously motivated or not.
I'll start: I'm sitting in a comfortable chair in my cozy apartment, and I have a slightly extended weekend to enjoy and ...
