FreeSync monitors hit mass production, coming in Jan-Feb
Among other things, AMD's Catalyst Omega driver announcement has given us an update of sorts on the status of FreeSync. AMD told us in August that the first FreeSync panels would be out in early 2015, and the company looks set to keep that schedule.
FreeSync displays have entered the mass production and validation stage, AMD tells us. The first commercial offerings are now scheduled ...

Fourth AC Unity patch to address 'most' remaining problems
Almost a month after its release, Assassin's Creed Unity is still getting its rough edges smoothed out. Ubisoft is working on Patch 4, which it expects to "rectify most of the remaining issues . . . players have been reporting"—finally.
The company doesn't go into much detail, but it says Patch 4 will bring frame-rate improvements and "additional fixes." Among other things, the fixes will apparently address crashes that occur when the player loads saved games. (I'm sure those ...

Marvell tunes its latest NVMe SSD controller for tablets and convertibles
In August, Marvell introduced a potent PCIe SSD controller with four Gen3 lanes and support for the NVM Express protocol. Today, it's back with a toned-down version designed for slim tablets, convertibles, and "Chrome devices." The new chip is also destined for "value-line client" SSDs, so it could pop up in drives suitable for desktop PCs.

Report: Intel to power Swiss smartwatch
Intel may enter the wearables space in earnest next year—at least if the latest rumors are any indication. There's already word of the company powering the next Google Glass gizmo, and now, Business Insider reports that Intel may also join forces with a Swiss watchmaker on an x86 smartwatch.
The site names TAG Heuer as Intel's potential partner, and it expects a "sleek, classy watch" that may look more like a proper Swiss timepiece than a tech gadget. Apparently, the Withings Activité is a good example of ...

Samsung's 850 EVO solid-state drive reviewed
Samsung's 850 EVO SSD has been a long time coming. We got our first hint of its existence in July, when the firm revealed that it was developing a TLC version of its 3D V-NAND. More details on the three-bit variant were released in August, when Samsung confirmed that the flash was destined for the 850 EVO. Then, in October, mass production of TLC V-NAND chips began, setting the stage for today's formal unveiling.
The new EVO has some Shaq-sized shoes to fill. Samsung claims that its predecessor, the 840 EVO, is the best-selling SSD on the market. We haven't seen sales figures to support that ...

Friday night topic: The coming doom of Canon and Nikon?
I
have been very satisfied with the progression of digital camera
technology over the years, and its development has allowed us to produce
some very nice visuals in our reviews here at TR. I've dutifully
upgraded my DSLR every so often and enjoyed better results each time. However, I have become increasingly convinced in recent years that the traditional camera heavyweights, especially Nikon and Canon, are facing a major problem. Smartphone cameras have already taken away the point-and-shoot market, and they keep getting better. Now, there are some obvious physical and ...

Corsair's Carbide Series Air 240 revisited
Corsair's Carbide Series Air 240 case put in a good showing in my full-length review. I liked its relatively spacious interior, its dual-chamber cooling design, and its quiet demeanor, all of which come at a reasonable price of $90.
One thing I didn't get to test, however, was the case's cooling performance (and noise levels) with all of its stock fans in place. Part of the Air 240's claim to fame is ...
