Anyone Can Now Use IBM's Watson to Crunch Data for Free
Have a bunch of numbers to crunch or a theory that needs proving and nowhere free to turn to? Say hello to your new best friend in the computing field; no other than that Jeopardy playing super-computer, IBM's Watson. IBM has opened up access to Watson as part of a beta program.
Users of Watson Analytics feed in their own raw data, say, in the form of a spreadsheet, which the service then crunches with its own statistical analysis to highlight associations between different variables.

Train-Mounted Lasers Blast Tracks Clean
Laser equipped trains? That sounds like something straight from a bad sci-fi novel, but it's a fact according to a newly released report from New Scientist. Dutch railways is currently testing out the laser equipped trains to determine the effectiveness of the lasers in clearing the tracks. Fear not for the stray cows, the lasers only go for the leaves.
Dutch Railways is now conducting experiments with lasers mounted just in front of the wheels and angled down to zap away the leaves and leave the track dry, which helps with traction.

Angry Birds Publisher Rovio Laying off 14% of Work Force
Rovio has made good on an announcement back in October that the company would be laying off a substantial number of employees. It was announced this week that Rovio would be laying off a total of 110 employees and shutting down its studio in Tampere, Finland and consolidating operations at the Espoo, Finland studio.
This company was on top of the world with Angry Birds only a few years ago, with plenty of writers in the mobile game declaring stuff like "Angry Birds is the new Super Mario." How long did that last?

CBS and Dish Reach Deal
Almost miraculously after Dish Network's CBS programming went dark, CBS and Dish Network reached an accord that will ensure programming from CBS to continue in a multi-year contract.
Dish is also putting some significant restrictions on its controversial Hopper DVR, effectively disabling automatic ad skipping for the first week after a show aired on CBS. In return, CBS is dropping its lawsuit against the Hopper.

Apple Betting Big on India with Plans for 500 Stores
Apple is going after one of the largest smartphone market in the world by planning to open a total of 500 new stores in mid-to-small-sized cities and towns all over India according to reports from The Times of India. Apple already has a presence in many of the larger cities across India.
