Government Criticizes Cable Companies For Cashing In On Data Caps
Does anyone think big cable companies give a crap about the government criticizing them?
A growing number of cable companies are implementing data caps (sorry "data thresholds"), which put limits on how much data a subscriber could use before facing penalties ranging from warning messages to throttled speeds to overage fees. A new report from the federal Government Accountability Office says that lack of competition in the broadband market could result in these caps being implemented with no one benefiting other than cable companies' bottom lines.

Indiegogo Testing Crowdfunding Insurance
I think offering crowdfunding insurance is a pretty good idea.
If you've poured a lot of money into crowdfunding, you've probably backed a project that either missed its release date or was an out-and-out fraud -- and since there are rarely recourses in these cases, that often means that you've wasted your money. For Indiegogo, this is enough of a concern that it's now testing crowdfunding insurance that compensates you if a campaign goes belly-up.

How Satya Nadella Turned Microsoft Around In A Year
Personally, I think it is way too early to claim Microsoft has been "turned around" in a year by its new CEO. What do you think?
Satya Nadella, Microsoft's new chief executive, hasn't entirely avoided controversy during the nine months he's been at the company's helm. But he's already managed to steer the company back onto a direction that's healthy for the company, after years of stagnation under his predecessor.

Sony Hack Exposed Budgets, Layoffs, Scripts, And 3,800 SS Numbers
I guess the Sony Pictures hack was way bigger than first thought. In addition to the leaked movies, scripts, budgets and almost four thousand social security numbers were compromised.
The document, which listed the names, titles, and salaries of more than 6,000 Sony Pictures employees including senior executives (and may have revealed a gender pay discrepancy), appears to be part of an enormous data breach that hit the studio last week, forcing them to shutter computer systems, move employees to paper and pencils, and call in the FBI and private security researchers to investigate the hack.

So, we're improving the reporting process to make it much more mobile-friendly, require less initial information, and, overall, make it simpler to flag Tweets and accounts for review. These enhancements similarly improve the reporting process for those who observe abuse but aren't receiving it directly. And to enable faster response times, we've made the first of several behind-the-scenes improvements to the tools and processes that help us review reported Tweets and accounts.

The Fight Over Online Sales Tax And How It Impacts You
The crew at Engadget have put together an article on the fight over online sales tax and what it means to you. Definitely good reading.
The reason the tax-vague internet is back in the headlines is a concerted effort by small business lobbying groups and the bill's sponsors to get it attached to legislation almost sure to be passed in this lame-duck December - an extension of the ban on state and local taxes on your actual internet service as billed to you by your ISP. That bill - the Internet Tax Freedom Act - has nearly universal support, as the 10-year moratorium is due to expire on December 11th, and nobody in D.C. wants to head home for the holidays with an honest-to-god internet tax to levy on their constituents for Christmas.
