Hack-and-Slash MMORPG Lost Ark Gets Debut Trailer, as Developer Considers Global Market
South Korean studio SmileGate has unveiled its new upcoming title, Lost Ark. Previously known as Project T, Lost Ark is an isometric, hack-and-slash MMORPG built using Unreal Engine 3 and co-developed by Tripod Studio, and its debut trailer is already generating quite the buzz with its striking visuals. Lost Ark will feature a whopping 18 playable characters, with four revealed thus far: Fighter, Warrior, Magician, and Gunner. Already the skills look quite unique, with amazing special effects and weaponry ranging from giant swords to magic to guns. Oh, and there are various mounts as well, including a dragon and giant mech.
With its isometric view and hack-and-slash gameplay, Lost Ark will certainly garner comparisons to Diablo 3 and Path of Exile. But from what is shown in the trailer, Lost Ark may not only be able to compete with the likes of those games, but also stand on its own. The production value appears awfully high, especially for a game that will likely be free-to-play based on SmileGate's biggest title, CrossFire. If the game's future publisher can keep the microtransactions at a purely aesthetic level like Grinding Gear Games has done with Path of Exile, Lost Ark could be a major success.
Of course the burning question is whether Lost Ark will actually make its way to Western markets. Fortunately, it seems that SmileGate is creating the game with a global mindset. Ji Won-gil, who heads both Tripod Studio and the SmileGate Group's affiliate SmileGate RPG, told Koreatimes that "the game is designed to target both domestic and overseas markets." That being said, nothing's set in stone, with him going on to say that the company still needs to "think over how to localize detailed parts of the game to attract foreign users."
Lost Ark has been in development for more than three years, with more than 150 members on the development team. Closed Beta is expected to begin next year, though that will likely be for South Korea only.

Leaked Screenshots of Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series Reveal Some Familiar Faces
While Telltale Games revealed that the focus of its upcoming Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series would be the lesser known House Forrester, there will certainly be a lot of familiar faces present in the game to anyone who has watched the HBO series. At least, that's if the eight leaked screenshots that have been spread all over social media are indeed legit. Kotaku claims that XBLA-focused Twitter account lifelower was the first to release the screenshots, but whatever the source, they should certainly be taken with a grain of salt.
Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series is coming soon to PC (Windows & Mac), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and iOS.

PC Gamers, Be Prepared to Jump to Windows 10; DirectX 12 May Not Come to Windows 7
If you're an avid PC gamer like myself, you're likely eagerly awaiting the next iteration of Microsoft's DirectX API, DirectX 12 (DX12). Officially unveiled during GDC 2014 back in March, DX12 is poised to be the biggest jump since DX9 to DX10 thanks to improved CPU utilization, lower-level access, and more. But what is still unknown is what the operating system requirement will be. While all Microsoft devices will have DX12 support moving forward, including Xbox One and Windows-powered mobile devices, recent information indicates that Windows 7 will not be supported.
The claim that DX12 won't come to Windows 7 was made by AMD's Chief Gaming Scientist (yes, that's a real position) Richard Huddy, who let that tidbit slip during a PDXLAN presentation earlier in the month. His exact words were, "One thing that's not going to happen to [Windows 7] is DX12. Yup, DX12 is not coming to Windows 7." Yes, he outright said that, leaving no gray area. However, AMD told GameSpot earlier today that Huddy simply "misspoke," stating the following:
"There have been reports based on a video of Richard Huddy of AMD making speculative comments around DirectX 12 support on versions of Windows. Richard Huddy does not speak for Microsoft, and he was unfortunately speculating from Microsoft’s publication of key dates and milestones for Windows 7 lifecycle and mainstream support policy. Richard has no special insight into Microsoft’s Windows or DirectX roadmaps. Microsoft is a key, strategic partner for AMD and we’re continuously collaborating with them on DirectX 12."
It's highly likely that AMD is just trying to cover its ass right now, with Huddy likely letting private, NDA-covered information slip publicly. Windows 7 celebrated its fifth anniversary last month and mainstream support for the OS will cease in January 2015, so it is certainly highly likely DX12 will require Windows 8 or later, whether or not Huddy and AMD know the truth. So if you're like the majority of PC gamers who stuck with Windows 7 all this time, you may want to keep your eyes on Windows 10.

Spotify Integration Coming to Uber
Although an official announcement will more than likely be made tomorrow at an Uber global conference, it looks like the ridesharing service will soon feature Spotify integration. Spotify has been attempting to branch outside of its own offering for some time, and with integration into Uber, it will continue to reach additional users. According to a leaked screenshot of a user interface apparently hidden within the current Uber application, passengers of Uber vehicles with an AUX audio input will be able to pause, skip, rewind, and shuffle songs. The user interface will also show the song title and the artist of the music being played through the car audio system.

Survival Game This War of Mine Now Available
This War of Mine was a long time in the making for 11 bit studios, the indie developer behind the popular reverse-tower-defense series Anomaly. But it wasn't the actual coding and designing that was trying, but rather all the research 11 bit studios put into the game. This isn't your typical war game; the studio wanted to capture "the real face of war." And that meant "read[ing] through memoirs and listen[ing] to the often heartbreaking stories of people who witnessed hell on earth with their own eyes." Many people shared their stories, and one person in particular, Emir Cerimovic, is featured in the game's official Launch Trailer, entitled "The Survivor".
This War of Mine is now available for purchase via Steam or via GamesRepublic (Steam key + DRM-free build) for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Early user reviews are quite positive.

Players will take on the roles of Rhys, a Hyperion "suit", and Fiona, a Pandoran con artist.

New Electronic Tongue Developed
Taste is such an important sense as it can let us know to avoid spoiled foods and more. Naturally, some have been working to replicate this sense electronically, for use as a chemical sensor. As reported in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, a group of researchers have succeeded in creating such a sensor that is both highly sensitive and cheap.
Electronic tongues mimic real tongues by having a great many, small sensors on them that detect different substances, and then report back what they have. What sets this e-tongue apart from others is that it has a silicon base, which will make it easier to connect to other, silicon-based electronics. So far they have tested it with water, whiskey, cognac, and Armagnac and it did provide distinct signatures for each.
Already artificial tongues are used to check the quality of different foods, but this device could have more uses beyond that. The researchers specifically designed it to have potential applications in medicine for diagnostics and drug testing, as well as environmental monitoring on top of food testing.
