Windows 10 now features Action Center from Windows Phone
Microsoft has pushed out the latest build of its Windows 10 Technical Preview, with build 9860 being made available to members of the company's Windows Insider Program. As long as their PC is on, or sleeping, the update will be pushed over to down, and installed automatically.
TweakTown image windows_10_now_features_action_center_from_windows_phone
If you want to manually force this, go to PC Settings, Update and Recovery, then Preview builds and then tap on the 'Check now' button. The new update is between 2GB and 2.7GB "depending on CPU architecture and language", with the rebooting process taking a little longer than normal. Once the newest build of Windows 10 is on your machine, you'll notice it has a Windows Phone feature: Action Center.
Microsoft explains this as "This build is focused ONLY on enabling basic notifications - quick actions and cleaner UI will come later. You'll see notifications from the system and apps - from new emails and invites to IMs, Facebook posts and more - all-in-one place, so you don't miss a thing. Click on the new Action Center icon in the notification area of your taskbar to check it out". The company has also made it easier to move apps between monitors, and has also added an animation for switching desktops.

Samsung Knox-powered devices get approved for classified use by NSA
Samsung has been itching to get into that enterprise and government market, and thanks to the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP), a joint activity of the National Security Agency (NSA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Samsung is now approved and has a handful of its Galaxy devices on the Commercial Solutions for Classified program listing.
TweakTown image samsung_knox_powered_devices_get_approved_for_classified_use_by_nsa
These devices include the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition), Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy Tab S 8.4, Galaxy Tab S 10.5, and the Galaxy IPSEC Virtual Private Network (VPN) Client. All of these devices feature Samsung's Knox technology, which is a security platform that allows users to use their smartphones and tablets for both work, and personal purposes. Samsung's CEO and President of IT and Mobile Business, JK Shin, said "The inclusion of Samsung mobile devices on the CSfC list proves the unmatched security of Samsung Galaxy devices supported by the Knox platform".
This move isn't a massive one, but it's a step towards something that could spell change for Samsung. A company that sells hundreds of million of handsets, Apple's biggest competitor by far, is now dealing with the government on NSA-approved smartphones and tablets with true government-ready security.

GIGABYTE teases super tiny, factory-overclocked GeForce GTX 970
Mini-ITX PCs are about to get much faster thanks to GIGABYTE's new card based on the GeForce GTX 970 GPU, but arrives in a dual-slot, single-fan design that is much shorter than the standard GTX 970, perfect for tiny, but very powerful gaming PCs.
TweakTown image gigabyte_teases_super_tiny_overclocked_geforce_gtx_970_in_mini_itx
The new mini-ITX based video card has an overclocked GTX 970 GPU, 4GB of RAM, a custom PCB from GIGABYTE, and a WindForce-like cooler. The custom design allows for a single 8-pin PCIe connector, versus the two 6-pin PCIe required on the normal GTX 970. GIGABYTE's custom designed cooler is quite compact, with a single, shrouded fan. We have a slight overclock on the Core and Boost speeds, from 1051MHz on the Core to 1076MHz on the GIGABYTE card, while we have Boost of 1178 on the reference GTX 970, but 1215MHz on the GIGABYTE slab.
Some other GTX 900 series cards actually ditch the multiple DisplayPort connectors, but not this card: we have three DisplayPorts, one HDMI, one DVI-D and a DVI-D port to finish it off. GIGABYTE says the custom cooler provides lower temperatures than the reference, with temperatures dropping from 76C to just 62C on the GIGABYTE card. Small form factor PCs have just received notice of their next GPU purchase.

Wall Street wants joint cybersecurity approach with regulators
The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), the top Wall Street trade group, wants increased inter-agency efforts to create cybersecurity guidelines for the financial industry. Instead of a "one size fits all" approach to cyberattacks, regulators would be able to ensure cybersecurity rules force companies to conduct "risk-based" and "value-added" audits.
TweakTown image wall_street_wants_joint_cybersecurity_approach_with_regulators
"You could have a patchwork... for a big global bank, of five or six regulators all looking at this from a slightly different perspective, with slightly different guidance or principles of what they think is effective," said Karl Schimmeck, SIFMA managing director of financial services operations, in a statement to Reuters.
Banks and financial companies already use stronger cybersecurity than other private sector companies, but JPMorgan Chase's recent breach indicated they clearly aren't immune from high-profile cyberattacks. The U.S. federal government is battling how to force companies to disclose breaches, along with helping them defend against future attacks.

Google shifts stance, fighting privacy by highlighting legal websites
Google is shaking things up a bit overseas, as the company tries to help copyright groups defend against Internet piracy. Instead of prominently linking to websites that allow users to download copyrighted content illegally, Google will display legal services, including Google Play, Spotify, and other alternatives. Legal sites will float to the top and illegal content will be displayed lower in the results.
TweakTown image google_shifts_stance_fighting_privacy_by_highlighting_legal_websites
Of course, Google is requiring legal services to pay for advertising so they appear at the top of search results - and the BPI trade group doesn't think companies should have to pay.
"There should be no cost when it comes to serving consumers with results for legal services," a Google spokesperson told the BBC. "Instead we have urged Google to use the machine-readable data on the Music Matters website, which lists all services licensed in the UK, and to promote these legal services above illegal sites and results in their search, using appropriate weighting applied fairly and equally across services."

Illegal drone flights over sports stadiums pose a security risk
Illegal drone flights over sports stadiums in Europe now have organizers worried about potential security concerns, after a drone flew an Albanian nationalist banner over a European Championship soccer qualifier between Serbia and Albania.
TweakTown image illegal_drone_flights_over_sports_stadiums_pose_a_security_risk
Instead of a harmless flag flying over the grounds, UEFA president Michael Platini wondered what would happen if a drone carried a bomb instead of a flag. It is difficult for aviation and security specialists to try to stop small drones flying over stadiums, as they are able to get extremely close to the spectators and sports players before being identified.
"It was highlighted as being an emerging issue at sports grounds, with the use of drones at grounds increasing significantly in the last two years," said Caroline Hale, Sports Ground Safety Authority head of communications. "We are reminding clubs that it is worth looking at their contingency plans in light of possible increased use of drones over sports grounds and look at potential risks arriving from a drone accident."

Chinese government denies it played a role in Apple iCloud attacks
Well, that didn't take long: China is denying any responsibility in reported Apple iCloud attacks aimed at compromising Chinese users. The "man in the middle" (MITM) attack mimicked other similar cyberattacks the Chinese government has used in the past, and could have been carried out by state-sponsored groups.
TweakTown image chinese_government_denies_it_played_a_role_in_apple_icloud_attacks
Chinese government officials said Beijing is "resolutely opposed" to the cyberattacks, with China Telecom - a state-owned Internet service provider - saying the iCloud attack was "untrue and unfounded."
Meanwhile, Apple denies that its iCloud servers were breached by the Chinese government - or anyone else - with the attacks expected to continue. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were recently launched in China, which is why the cyberattacks took place so quickly.

Commercial drones rising in popularity, with major ramifications
It seems unlikely that drones will become commonplace in everyday life for consumers, but that doesn't mean there aren't potential long-term ramifications. An estimated 12 percent of a booming $98 billion for aerial drone spending in the next 10 years will be dedicated to commercial drones.
TweakTown image commercial_drones_rising_in_popularity_with_major_ramifications
Looking ahead, companies hope to see drones used to deliver groceries and product shipments, along with agricultural development, and to help conduct high-level construction supervision. Starting in 2015, commercial drone flights - with drones weighing 55 pounds or less - will help offer guidelines and regulation of wide-scale drone use.
As more drones take to the skies, there will be continued concern of privacy and safety issues, which will remain a major threat. However, drone-powered applications will be required to meet certain standards to prevent possible invasion of privacy cases.

Gmail 5.0 for Android will allow support for Outlook and Yahoo
Google has only just unveiled Android 5.0 Lollipop, but one of the bigger surprises it has is Gmail 5.0 for Android. Gmail 5.0 for Android will sport a new look, pulling it alongside the new refreshed look of its Android apps of late, but it will do something that should shake up other companies: supporting Outlook.com and Yahoo accounts.
TweakTown image gmail_5_0_for_android_will_allow_support_for_outlook_and_yahoo
This sees Google wanting to have Gmail as a one-stop-shop for all things email, baking in support for two of its biggest competitors. In a leaked video, we can see that other mail services that are supported, apart from Outlook.com and Yahoo, will include IMAP and POP3, as most would expect. Some rumors suggest that Google has sprinkled Exchange ActiveSync over Gmail 5.0 for Android, which will stop people from having to switch between email apps, keeping it all within Gmail.
We should expect Gmail 5.0 to roll out when Android 5.0 Lollipop launches in a couple of weeks time.

InWin unveils two new cases, includes a full-tower gaming chassis
InWin has just unveiled two new cases to the world, with the new 707 Full Tower, and 703 Mid Tower. Starting with the 707, we have two colors available: 'Gaming Black' and 'Silent White' with both chassis' "constructed from strong and reliable SECC steel".
TweakTown image inwin_unveils_two_new_cases_includes_a_full_tower_gaming_chassis
The black version of the 707 features an acrylic side panel window, while the white version sports sound damping to provide quieter operation. Inside of the 707, we have some serious cooling capabilities, where support for both 360mm and 240mm radiators is allowed, at the roof, and bottom of the 707, respectively. InWin have generously provided 206mm of depth on the opposite side panel, which provides additional room for those super-tall coolers.
There are three 5.25-inch bays hidden behind a one-touch, pop-open door, while inside there are eight 3.5-inch HDD bays with screw less installation. Cable management is provided throughout the 707, as well as a big 20mm gap behind the motherboard tray that will keep your build nice and clean, as well as providing increased airflow.

Moving onto the InWin 703 Mid-Tower, we have a chassis that is perfect for smaller PC builds, but require the full ATX motherboard for SLI, Crossfire, and more advanced setups. The 703 is made from the same SECC steel as the 707, with a 'stealthy' 5.25-inch drive bay, as well as two more inside, four internal, tool-less 3.5-inch HDD bays. When it comes to liquid cooling on the 703, there's 170mm depth to the acrylic window opposite for taller heat sinks, as well as cable routing holes and a large heat sink installation hole in the motherboard tray.

Grand Theft Auto V beta scam is hitting gamers, again
It was only back in March that we reported there was a "beta" of Grand Theft Auto V floating around for the PC, fooling unsuspecting gamers into its phishing arms. Well, we're back again with another supposed beta for the game, this time, for the remastered version.
TweakTown image grand_theft_auto_v_beta_scam_is_hitting_gamers
Rockstar Games, the developer behind GTA, has said on its "no beta" page (something that has been up since May 2013) "Please note: There is no pre-release 'beta' test for Grand Theft Auto V. If you see ads or solicitations to join a beta program, beware as this is likely some type of online phishing scam".
The re-release of Grand Theft Auto V will reach the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 18, with the PC version delayed a couple of months, with a release date of January 27, 2015. Grand Theft Auto Online will be included with GTA V on the PS4, Xbox One and PC when it launches, something that supports 30 players at once.

The new Call of Duty requires 6GB of RAM, and 55GB of HDD space
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare launches on November 4, but you'd better have some HDD space free, as well as copious amounts of RAM. The new Call of Duty requires 6GB of RAM, which we've previously reported, but the required HDD space has been increased from 40GB to 55GB.
TweakTown image the_new_call_of_duty_requires_6gb_of_ram_and_55gb_of_hdd_space
The update on the HDD requirements are thanks to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's system requirements on Steam, which state it will only work on 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, as well as requiring 6GB of RAM and 55GB of available HDD space. The last game in the series, Call of Duty: Ghosts, required 6GB of RAM and 40GB of HDD space, but the 6GB of RAM requirement was later reduced.

Lenovo rumored to announce BlackBerry acquisition, this week
Lenovo is really hitting a stride lately, especially with their great Yoga range of slates and Ultrabooks, but what about smartphones? The latest rumor is that the Chinese electronics giant will announce an acquisition bid for Canadian phonemaker, BlackBerry... this week.
TweakTown image lenovo_rumored_to_announce_blackberry_acquisition_this_week
Unnamed sources have talked with Benzinga.com, a financial news site, that Lenovo is going to offer BlackBerry $15 per share, which is a premium over the $9 or so that its stock has been trading at lately. If BlackBerry declines the first offer, Lenovo will reportedly back it up with an increased offer of $18 per share.
Both Lenovo and BlackBerry have declined to comment on the rumors so far, but this isn't the first time they have been floating around. We heard about this back in October last year, but nothing happened. The issue was that the Canadian government wouldn't give its approval for Lenovo to acquire BlackBerry due to national security concerns.

I am Bread, a new RPG where you play as a slice of bread
If you've ever dreamt of playing a game where you play as a slice of bread, now is your chance. I am Bread is a new RPG from the developers of Surgeon Simulator, in which you play as a slice of bread.
TweakTown image i_am_bread_a_new_rpg_where_you_play_as_a_slice_of_bread
Your journey will start as a piece of bread that gets toasted, but not overly damaged, or crusty. How do you control a piece of bread? Simple, each four corners of the bread can twitch, allowing you to flop along surfaces, or climbing walls - you know, how bread would react if it were alive.
Bossa Studios is behind I am Bread, coming up with the idea during a game jam environment last month. This is the same way the team came up with Surgeon Simulator, with the studio formed back in 2010, specializing in free-to-play social network games, such as the Facebook bound Monstermind.

Seagate Enterprise Performance 15K HDD v4 450GB Enterprise Review

Introduction

TweakTown image seagate_enterprise_performance_15k_hdd_v4_450gb_enterprise_review
The Seagate Enterprise Performance 15K HDD v4 brings an increase in capacity to the 2.5" 15K HDD segment. The 15K v4 offers capacities of 600GB, 450GB, and 300GB in the 2.5" form factor. Along with the bump in capacity, Seagate offers 228 MB/s in sequential performance, a 24% increase in the SDR (Sustained Data Rate) over competitive offerings. The 15K v4 also brings a 3% increase in random read performance, and a 4% jump in random write performance.
The increased speed of 15K HDDs makes them attractive for addressing Tier-1 application performance requirements. The 2.5" form factor works well for blade, rack, and tower servers hosting transaction-based applications, and addresses increasing demands for more performance and capacity in a smaller space. The 15K v4 offers many of the inherent advantages of the 2.5" form factor, such as lower power consumption and higher performance, in comparison to the 3.5" 15K HDDs.
One of the newest additions to the Seagate 15K line is the arrival of Turbo SSHD models. These hybrid models provide seamless workload acceleration without any user configuration or management. We recently took an in-depth look at the Seagate Turbo SSHD, and the inclusion of a 32GB layer of eMLC NAND cache delivers incredible performance benefits. The option to choose a standard 15K HDD, or a 15K SSHD with built-in caching, provides users the flexibility to tailor their deployments to application requirements.
TweakTown image seagate_enterprise_performance_15k_hdd_v4_450gb_enterprise_review
The dual-port 6Gb/s connection offers high-availability features, such as multipath and failover, to the performance segment. The UBER rating of one per 10^16 is standard for this class of drive, but the 15K v4 differentiates itself with a robust two million hour MTBF. The drive also uses a larger 128MB multi-segmented cache to help boost performance.
There is an incremental increase in power consumption from the previous generation, but the doubling of capacity easily outweighs the small increase. The 15K v4 makes an impressive leap in watts-per-GB by doubling capacity at the cost of an additional .6 watts. The Enterprise Performance 15K v4 also touts an impressive 70% reduction in power in comparison to 3.5" 15K products. Power consumption equals heat, and Seagate dynamically reduces power consumption during operation with proprietary PowerTrim technology.
Performance-based deployments often require robust storage security features to meet data security and compliance initiatives. The 15K v4 covers the bases with SED, FIPS 140-2, and ISE versions. These versions protect data on the drive, and ease costs during the drive retirement, or repurposing process. The Enterprise Performance 15K HDD v4 also offers broad compatibility with 512N, 512E, and 4k format options available.
The 15K v4 line also offers thermal monitoring, a humidity sensor, and support for SAS-based Protection Information. Seagate has also focused on the Unified Storage Architecture, which uses fewer components to reduce failure points, and reduce design, qualification, and support costs.
The battle for high-performance slots has intensified as SSDs have brought stiff competition to the table, but this has also led to more competitive pricing and performance from the venerable 15K HDD segment. Let's take a closer look.
