Microsoft's quarterly revenue up 25% on strong Surface, Xbox sales
Microsoft is the latest in a string of tech companies to report positive quarterly financial results. For its first fiscal quarter, which ended September 30, the firm took in $23.2 billion in revenue, a 25% increase over the same quarter last year. Civ: Beyond Earth with Mantle aims to end multi-GPU microstuttering
The next installment in Sid Meier's Civilization series, Civilization: Beyond Earth, comes out tomorrow. The folks at AMD have been working with its developer, Firaxis, to optimize the game for Radeon graphics cards. CPU startup claims to achieve 3x IPC gains with VISC architecture
A Silicon Valley startup known as Soft Machines has just exited its "stealth" phase and is presenting at the Linley Microprocessor Conference today. The firm is introducing a new CPU architecture that it calls VISC.

VisionTek's new USB 3.0 thumb drive has SSD performance
There are speedy USB 3.0 thumb drives, and then there's VisionTek's newly announced Pocket SSD. Apparently, the drive's "aircraft-grade aluminum" housing conceals a SandForce controller backed by enough flash chips to hit 455MB/s during reads and 440MB/s during writes—you know, about the same level of performance as a proper SATA SSD.

Lian Li's latest Mini-ITX chassis houses 11 hard drives
Mini-ITX motherboards can be ideal for home file servers, but the associated enclosures typically have a limited number of drive bays, especially for 3.5" mechanicals. Lian Li's new PC-Q26 should have no problem housing a massive RAID array, though. The firm's latest mini contender is loaded with 11 drive bays.

Gmail and Google Now conspire to streamline your Inbox
Google is trying to reinvent email with a new mobile and web app called Inbox. This "fresh start" seems primarily geared toward streamlining the experience by using Google's information-gathering prowess—and access to email contents—to present a series of simplified previews populated with relevant details.
