Friday night topic: The nosehair trimmer dilemma
The modern economy is a wonderful blessing in many ways, but it does produce some strange scenarios that can be difficult to process. I remember, when I visited Uganda in college, talking to someone who explained how Western-style supermarkets could be incredibly stifling to a person not accustomed to so much choice. How do you know, they asked, which type of toilet paper to choose? Or toothpaste? Apparently, confronting choice when you've not had it can be perplexing, even paralyzing.
Shopping online at Amazon can put me in that position at times. I remember ...

Somehow, we've managed to fill a weekly deals post without including any SSDs. Shocking!

FCC docs hint at Chromecast dongle with 5GHz Wi-Fi
Google's $35 Chromecast dongle is a pretty nifty way to get videos and other content from PCs and mobile devices to an HDTV. The current version of the device supports only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, but according to Android Police, a new model with 5GHz support is on the way.
The site came across an FCC filing for a Chromecast-looking device with a new model number. The filing mentions "operation in the PCS band, the 2.4 GHz band and the ...

AMD suffers falling revenue, announces 7% staff cut
Last quarter's strong PC shipments may have helped Intel's bottom line, but by the looks of it, they didn't do much for AMD's. While the underdog's third-quarter financials show a modest net income of $17 million, they also outline revenue declines both for the company as a whole and for its Computing and Graphics business unit in particular.
On top of those lackluster numbers, AMD has announced a 7% reduction in ...

Will.i.am's Puls looks like a bracelet, is smarter than a watch
Move over, smartwatches. Black Eyed Peas member and Intel "director of creative innovation" Will.i.am has introduced a smart... cuff. It's reportedly based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor backed by 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. 3G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity are all included along with a GPS, pedometer, accelerometer, and speaker. Latest Humble Bundle games work in a web browser
The Humble Bundle is back with a new collection of PC games at a pay-what-you-want price. And this time, there's a new gimmick. In addition to being available in DRM-free downloadable form (and, in most cases, via Steam), the latest crop includes browser-based versions of each title. You'll need at least Chrome 28 or Firefox 22 to take advantage, though the official site notes that "other browsers capable of executing JavaScript or mobile browsers may also work but are not guaranteed."
Mozilla's asm.js JavaScript variant is credited for powering the browser-based magic. Asm.js was also used to bring the WebGL port of Epic Citadel to life and for a slick Unreal Engine 4 demo ...

HBO to launch standalone streaming service in 2015
Next year, you may be able to watch Game of Thrones as it airs without a cable subscription... and without resorting to less-than-legal avenues. Time Warner, HBO's parent company, has announced plans to offer a standalone HBO streaming service next year. The announcement is actually fairly short and to the point, so I'll reproduce it here it is in its entirety:
Speaking at the Time Warner Inc. Investor Meeting today, Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO, HBO, announced that the company will offer a stand-alone HBO streaming service in 2015. Following a portion of ...

XFX's Type-01 Series Bravo case reviewed
If there's a theme in PC hardware companies' product line-ups of late, it's to provide as much of a one-stop solution for the PC builder as possible. XFX is no stranger to this strategy. The company is best known for its high-octane AMD Radeon GPUs, but it sells power supplies and PC enclosures, as well.
Today, I'm here to look at the Type-01 Series Bravo Edition, XFX's first entry into the enthusiast case market. I'm ...

ASRock's Z97 Extreme6 motherboard reviewed
The market for Haswell motherboards is crowded with contenders, many of which differ only slightly from one another. ASRock's Z97 Extreme6 manages to stand out among the masses, though. Unlike most Z97 offerings, whose M.2 sockets connect via dual PCIe 2.0 lanes in the chipset, the Extreme6 boasts "Ultra M.2" goodness with quad PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU.
The Extreme6 has a typical M.2 implementation, too, along with SATA Express connectivity, dual Gigabit Ethernet jacks, and a generous number of USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps ports. Add the beefy power circuitry and oversized ...
