Friday night: Your customer service pet peeves
Over the past few weeks and months, horror stories about Comcast's customer service have made the rounds. We've heard a desperate retention rep refuse to a let a user cancel his service, and we've even read about the company getting one of its customers fired.
Of course, this sort of stuff isn't unique to Comcast. I'm sure there are worse offenders out there. And some firms with otherwise ...

ASRock's latest X99 motherboard goes to 11
The current crop of X99 motherboards is loaded with PCI Express slots, M.2 sockets, and Serial ATA ports. But existing implementations apprently weren't enough for ASRock, which has rolled out a new Extreme11 variation that truly lives up to its name. The upgrades start at the CPU socket, which supports not only Haswell-E desktop processors, but also server-grade Haswell-EP chips. Haswell-E CPUs will apparently work with up to 128GB of standard DDR4 memory, while EP-based Xeons will unlock support for ECC RAM.

Top five PC vendors increase shipments in Q3
Gartner and IDC have both published PC shipment figures for the third quarter. There are slight differences due to how the research firms count PCs, but both agree on the overall trend. Samsung starts mass-producing TLC V-NAND
We've known about Samsung's plans to pack three bits per cell into its 3D V-NAND since the company's SSD Global Summit in July. A few more details about the technology trickled out during the Flash Memory Summit in August, including the fact that TLC V-NAND will power an upcoming 850 EVO SSD. That drive must be close, because Samsung has started mass-producing 3D V-NAND with an extra bit per cell.

AMD's CEO transition is a natural next step
I just finished listening in to the conference call for financial analysts regarding AMD's CEO transition from Rory Read to Dr. Lisa Su. As usual in cases like this one, the words spoken by Read and Su were carefully chosen and partially scripted ahead of time. As a result, they didn't offer a completely satisfying answer to the questions on everyone's minds about why Read is leaving just a few short years after he took the helm at AMD. Carefully crafted statements from large companies in a time of change rarely satisfy everyone's natural curiosity. One always wonders if there is a larger story behind the official narrative.
Perhaps we'll find out about a profound internal disagreement or dissatisfaction from the ...
